I've had my Ridgeback for almost 10 years now. He's slowed down a lot. I'll miss him a lot when he goes to Ridgeback heaven. Tyson won't be my last Ridgeback. They are a great breed.
+Rae Rael Thanks, he's a handsome boy in my opinion. LOL. My wife picked him out in 2006 and Tyson was her boy. Cancer got my wife in 2013 and he was pretty sad. He loves our daily 3 mile walks and I take him just about everywhere. He's a good boy.
+raykrv6a I appreciate your reply. Your wife had a wonderful intuition by picking Tyson! This may sound crazy but I observed that some dogs are real dogs and other dogs are human-dogs. Tyson's face expression tells me he is a human-dog. 3 mile walks that would be almost 5km (in metric), that's so great! My sister has a ridgeback and I have a beagle and we are also making around 4 miles a day. Aren't dogs our best fitness coaches? I can imagine how sad was Tyson after your wife crossed over. But dogs know that it is only our physical body which isn't here, your wife is with you and Tyson in spirit all the time and certainly whenever you wish her to be there with you.
+Rae Rael ラエ・ラエル Tyson passed away Feb 13th, 2016. He had tumors in his spleen and it spread before we found it. It was very hard at first, but took some time and spoke with a breeder for an hour today and going to get one of the pups in her next litter coming up shortly. The breeder works in a clinic and said cancer seems to be affecting many more dogs today, then 15-20 years ago. She believes it's what is put in the dog food. I'm going to follow her recommendations for this pups food and care.
+raykrv6a I am very sorry to hear about Tyson's passing. He will stay in your hearts forever and they say that when it's time for humans to cross over, our dear pets will be there welcoming us. It's comforting thought so I believe in it. Yes, I utterly agree that dogs are getting cancers from the food and the environment as well. I would only recommend organic raw meat (or fish) with veggies and potatoes, you can research on it but when buying processed food you are taking the risks for not knowing what is in it. What did the breeder recommend? I am sending Tyson small virtual bone to chew on in his Ridgeback heaven.
Your RR is the size of a horse!!! I just got my first Ridgeback puppy a couple days ago. He's the best! He sleeps on my shoulders when I drove home. I love RR's.

That is exactly what life is like with the RR. run,rest,eat....repeat Training takes patience and repetition. Reward, do not scold, ever. I have a pack of 5, it's either energetic beautiful chaos or a sweet scene of slumber. Love this breed.
My Sadie, a ridgeback (without a ridge) is about to turn 12. At that advanced age, she's still headstrong and full of attitude. Life has been a joy with her.

My Rhodesian, Roxy, behaves the same way. Sleeping or 100mph figure eights. Notorious in the kitchen, she once pulled a large birthday cake from the counter and ate the entire thing in about 1-2 minutes. Very protective of all children and very suspicious of strangers. She has killed a few wild varmints that have strayed into the back yard and her bark is loud, which scares some people. She will not bite adults but she will circle, bark and charge a stranger that comes within 100 feet of the house.

love this, really shows how ridgebacks are. as far as being aggressive with other dogs and being able to live with cats (some questions down below). rhodesian ridgebacks are very much family dogs, and tends to bond with his/her family, and can be a little wary of strangers, especially in thier home. this doesn't mean they are aggressive, just that they aren't going to run up and love all over a new person. Bitches can get along with other dogs fairly well, but usually takes some time warming up to them, like people. so new/strange dogs running up and getting in thier face isn't great. dogs (males) are known to be a bit on the dog aggressive side, especially intact males with other males (intact or neutered). this just means don't take him to an off leash dog free for all. then you are going to get a fight. take them to a park where they can run without being mobbed by other dogs. if a fight ever happens DON'T get in the middle of it. instead grab both dogs back legs and "wheelbarrow"them, dogs have a hard time getting at each other at that angle, and they can't get the person either. also (a little weird, but effective) put a finger in thier butt. gross, but effective, it sometimes shocks them into stopping, or letting go. fights can even happen between two brothers or boys that live together since puppy hood so be careful. this doesn't mean you shouldn't get one, and doesn't apply to every dog. we have two bitches currently, one fits this to a tee, the other is the most loving, in your face, look at all the new friends, dog ever. also, both our girls lived with a cat for a while, and as far as that goes, it's really a dog to dog basis I'm afraid. depends on the cat and the dog. they love laying around, and they also love, and need to, run. if you live in a apartment or other limited room place, be prepared to take them some place to run. also, hide your food, hide your trash. ridgebacks are notorious food hounds. they will eat unguarded food. they also do better with positive reinforced training. contact a local rescue or experienced breeder/ owner to learn more as they are, in my opinion, the greatest dogs in the world!
Nice video. I'm on my second ridgey now, Rufus (Rufaro), and I know so many other people who have them. I think almost all owners would identify with the behavior shown in your video. I'm sure most Ridgebacks think they're human :)
i have a ridgeback he is so sweet they are they best dogs ever. I had to get a new one named archer because my last one died a year or so ago, he was my boy i love him so much. They are wonderful animals. They are great friends. when i was down they would cheer me up. I love all of my dogs but i have had a great relationship with them. They take up a lot of room in the bed which i think is funny! He is scared of pillows and a lot of other stuff. Well they are great animals!
This reminds me so much of my first RR, Rufus. He was my constant companion, was there for my first date with my wife, moved with us to Europe and back to the US, and was present at the births of both my children. I miss him every day...
I have a Rhodesian Plott Hound cross. Her name is Nala and she is just 14 months and 70 pounds. She does all of that...no wonder...she is a nut...hard headed, and sweet. Love when she hunts in the tall grass and bounds like a cat to see of the tops.
Hi, I'm from Perú...2 months ago, I found a dog like yours, she had a broken and infected leg and warts. I paid her treatment and sterilization and now she is healthy and I'm looking for a good family for her....I hope to get lucky in the search, she deserves it

Ooooooh, I love her! We had a Ridgie named Jake. One of the best dogs we ever had. He adored us and we adored him. My youngest son used to lay on him all the time and Jakey didn't care. I have no doubt at all that my sweet Jake would've given his life for any of us. Unfortunately he just got old and his body wore out. I can't wait to see him at the Rainbow Bridge again one day.
I love and want a ridgeback for my family. I have a young family and people make it seem like they need 3 hour run per day.....then I see comments like this! It's tough to know exactly what they need. But I love everything else about them...

I'm training Scooby to be able to go to hospital and make kids smile, some kind of therapy . Plus I'm study to be a certified Dog trainer. I really love my dog and I want to help the other dogs are in the shelter to be adopted . But I just want to say thank you for this video. I was really down and your video makes me feel strong again. +Ricky X I just forgot to add what I do with Scooby. Well It's almost 100% the same of the video. He follow me everywhere I go and he is super smart. He likes to eat what I eat but he goes to diet ,when I go to diet . I normally run 3 miles everyday with him, plus we play in the house and the training he is getting to pass the good citizen test, to be able to bring him with me to places . He loves watch tv and he start learning how to turn the tv off. He turns the tv off at 8:30pm and that means I'ts time to go sleep. If I didn't go at that time with him. he makes sure he gets all the bed and he just looks at me when I'm trying to move it, like saying I told you so!!! lol I can't stop smiling at your video. I thing I saw it like a hundred times. Thank you again.
