    This was a very relaxed, but highly enjoyable day out in Shimokitazawa and Shinjuku for some Tokyo photography, shooting with a different camera to usual!
    I've had my Fujifilm Instax Wide 210 with me throughout the last few months, but due to all the filming, I've neglected to prioritise it in my camera bag and take it out with me to get shots with it. With only a few days left in Japan, I thought it best to make the most of it and have a fun day grabbing shots with this instant camera!
    I always enjoy the aesthetic of Fuji Instax cameras and love taking things back to basics to get some candid and imperfect images. These are by no means portfolio worthy images, but who cares? I had a great time taking these shots and the day has become incredibly memorable because of it!

    There is something about instant film that is satisfying. Something you don’t have to fuss about in some editing program or go get printed at a shop.

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  Před 5 lety +8

      Absolutely! The instant memories you get from them, even if they're fresh images, have such a depth to them, in the same way a distant memory would.

  • @mithelios
    @mithelios Před 5 lety +30

    The "pulling effect" that the camera does is because the viewfinder is on the left side. The closer you are to the subject, the more what you see and what is captured is different (shooting subjects far away, the distance between lens and viewfinder is minimal compared to how far is the subject).
    A trick that helps to frame close subjects is to tilt a little bit the camera on the left after framing it.
    I know it may sound a little bit unintuitive at first but this is the sort of flaws that makes you "feel" these cameras.
    You have no preview, exposing is tricky, framing is tricky, high contrasts and low light are not your friends. BUT, when you see your shots getting better over time, and those amazing colours coming out of nowhere... it's simply great!
    A little drop of analogic pleasure in a digital sea is always welcome :)
    This said I love your videos, I bought recently a Fuji X100F and I couldn't be happier about it.
    Thanks for the content, keep it up!

    This blog came just in time for me; I just recently began getting into instax film. I am so deeply in love with the images it produces. The blown out foregrounds and deepened backgrounds and the slightly grainy, pastelled, yet still vibrant colors, are driving me crazy. I even ordered new photo software that supposedly include some of the best film simulation prepacks available today. I'm really excited to see how my XT20 photos turn out when I apply vintage Fuji Film simulations, and even Kodachrome and other sims. Thanks for this man. I'll probably wind up watching this a few times this week just because it makes me smile so much haha. Always love your clips man.

    The Instax wide is not a new format, fuji has been making it for over 20 years (1998). The mini was a derivative of the original (wide) format. Then they came out with the square format as a rival to the Polaroid format.
    Instax instant film is completely stable and no need to take any special care, for instance, no need to shield from light or special storage.
    Original Polaroid film, 2008 and prior was the same, very stable, not sensitive to light and no need for special storage. Refrigerating would just help it last longer than the expiration date.
    Only new Polaroid films that are not the original recipe, are a bit hit and miss but it’s all we can get now, so we have to just deal with it until they finally perfect it, which I imagine will take some time.
    Going to the “pulling to the right” effect is because of the off set view finer, the closer you get, the more obvious the parallax effect. This is how SLR cameras get perfect framing, as you are looking directly through the lens.

      Nice! You could also couple it with a 256mb card or something small enough for only a handful of shots. I used to do this out of necessity when I was a student and still rocking a 1gb card with my 50D for far too long! I’m intrigued by those instax printers. I’ve always wondered what the colour quality is like given that it’s a digital device not photographic paper being exposed

    • @peterabbott3438
      @peterabbott3438 Před 5 lety

      Joe Allam the colour quality if you like Fujifilm colours is excellent on the printers. I have the first released model and its great. I ve been using a voigtlander 40mm manual lens on an X-T2 its a single coated lens and produces pretty much what you see on the lcd on camera. For me Its just nice to get some instant results its not about trying to replicate an instax or film experience.

  • @NumaticVacuum
    @NumaticVacuum Před 5 lety

    The instax Wide was the original Fuji Instax format.
    Fuji Instax and original Polaroid film are completely stable and letting it develop in light is not a problem at all. Both films are touchy with temperature during development which is why every instant photo comes out slightly different.
    The only instant film that is touchy with light exposure during development is Impossible Project made film to be compatible with Polaroid cameras.
    Shaking it like a Polaroid picture was something that was popularised by The song “Shake It” by Outcast. It was never recommended by the company however the songs lyrics was referring to Polaroid pack film (peel apart) where the photo was peeled off the negative once developed, which was still slightly wet and waving it in the air dried it quicker. This practice wasn’t supposed to be used with integral film but of course many people did.

      Thanks! I've been tempted to dust off my first DSLR, the Canon EOS 350D and see what I can do with it. Although the kit lens it came with actually broke, so I won't be able to fully relive the nostalgia.

    In Japan they usually understand when I say "hand check" and comply. Had a couple of agents refuse in Qatar, Scotland and China, but it doesn't hurt to try and reduce how often my film gets scanned.

      That’s a better phrasing. I think when I tried I just pointed and said camera haha

      @@joeallam "Film" would've probably yielded better results than "camera" 😅 also the Japanese word for Instax is "checky"

    I wouldn't be able to take photos like these with the best from Canon or Fujifilm (like the XT3), this shows how much the person behind the camera is important than the actual gear.

    Hi! So I have the same camera but I encountered a little problem.. So I had 2 films left, but i decided to take this pack out and insert a new a pack with 10 films. After taking 2 photos with the new pack of 10, it now displays 0 :( Do you know what's wrong? Can you help?
    I also tried to insert a brand new package of film and also replaced all batteries with new ones but it's still not working :( When clicking on the 'take photo' button, nothing happens... seems like the camera is not reading any films at all

    My god, I LOVE Tokyo, what an amazing place. I'll be back one day for sure. Great video, bringing back ace memories. Anyway, we've just started up our own photography channel to help out our online course students. If you've got a couple of minutes we'd love it if an experienced hand such as yourself could check us out, not expecting you to watch all the vids. It's just nice to touch base with great creators and hopefully catch up with you soon! Have a great day :-) (Stephen)
