- On Wednesday, members of the U.S. Coast Guard responded to an urgent call on the Niagara River, metres from the American falls.
New York State Park Police say a woman has died after the car she was in entered the Niagara River Wednesday morning on the U.S. side of the falls.
Coast Guard swimmer Derrian Duryea opened up to Global’s Shallima Maharaj about the rescue mission.

They put their lives on their line. Bravo to them for their sense of duty. Courage.
They were attempting to extract the driver of the vehicle who had driven into the Falls.
She died in the car took 2/3 hours
God bless our coast guard and bless those who serve in our military!
Kudos to the USCG in general, high commendations to the rescue swimmer🎖, pilot🎖and crew🎖. You make us proud.
World class local heroes.
Perhaps we can develop a type of rescue drone that is basically a flying robot designed for such operations, that has even a smaller propulsion system that can have a short use plasma thruster type of jet pack to deal with the challenges of ice formation.
It could essentially quickly fly on its own to a exact location and use vector thrusters stop on a dime, while robotic arms can reach into the falls with a netting. The digital lifeguard's A.I. would have to rely on critical timing being based on the observation of a database of predetermined variables for each overlapping order of operations, even including preemptively, such as knowing the behavioral patterns of vehicles or people approaching harmful physics concerns.
@@truetech4158 We are a long way from robots replacing top tier trained people like the these
Unbelievable heroes, all three...
"That others may live..."
Hard not to get choked up just watching the video.
Great example of love between Canada and the U.S.
These guys are awesome! Keep up the good work fellas and thank you for your service. So sorry for woman's family may she rest in peace.
Wow! What a brave man!
Such a badass shot of him coming down from the helicopter and going in the car. Just insane...
I grew up 15 minutes from Niagara Falls. The area around the falls is deadly but the whole Niagara River is a very dangerous river. I knew several people growing up that drowned while swimming, one being my best friend.
supposedly she committed suicide after losing a large amount of money at the seneca casino in Niagara Falls, i live here and that seems to be the story behind what happened. SINCE THE “news” wont report it.
When the pilot mentions bad visibility and "dodging windmills" it makes me wonder how close of a call they had with the windmills
Whenever I write reports, I like to say "if it made it into the report, it means I meant it".
Thank you for being there.
You guys are amazing. Thank you for all you do. Love from Canada 🇨🇦
Respect to the USCG.
Heartbreaking 💔
Blessing to you Sir!! Thanks for all you do always. So proud of your service and all others In The Service. ♥️🇺🇸🦅🎄
Heroes without capes ❤️
Real men, real bravery. Enough said
Welllllllll? Did the helicopter crash? Did they save the driver? How did the car get there? What did they have for lunch?
Come on Global News
So, as someone who has some swift water experience, what was the result?
Thanks for his efforts. His patient was deceased.
They believe the 60ish female purposely went into the river , no she did not survive but they did recover her body . No the helicopter did not crash and last I heard late yesterday the car had drifted very close to the edge of the falls and flipped onto the roof but hadn't gone over the falls yet .
No it didn’t. She likely killed herself by driving in the Falls. Lunch should have been tequila shots for these awesome guys.
Global news is crap. Just propaganda is all they put out
Incredible. Brave..Heroes.
From a Canadian, thanks guys. We got your back too
Awesome job US coast guard, r.i.p to the lady that died
Respect to this team.
You're welcome to stop by Canada any time as long as you bring over some In and Out Burger or Chipotle.
and bags of Dove chocolate lol
@@moreengover6033 You can say that aga......
The video it's a little misleading towards the end: this rescue happened on the American side of Niagara Falls: Not in Canada. The Niagara Regional Police and the Ontario Provincial Police have marine units ready to conduct any rescue necessary on the Canadian Horseshoe Falls side.
Heroes every one of them. The video made that mission look impossible, but they did all they could.
That's nice of Lt. Andrew Caudill to say that if need be they will rescue Canadians as well!
Ex U.S. Guardman of 1960's here on wives computer. The Canadian Coast Guard is also awesome and deserves our thanks for being our ally and working with us on so many occasions. They are first class all the way.
How does a Detroit based Coast Guard unit not have a Helicopter with DE-ICING capabilities? That is entirely unacceptable
Niagara Falls has nothing in place either you would think they would as she’s not the first to commit suicide in the falls I know plenty people who have jumped the falls American side is a joke the whole city is doneeeeeeee and declining daily
God bless the US Coast Guard.
So... what was the outcome? Was anyone inside the car? Were they OK? Not okay? It says rescue... where's the info here?
You're the best! GBY
This Sailor has gargantuan titanium balls.. The strength of Hercules and heart of a million lions.
I was just talking with my mom about this they other day, I said the guy who did this must have some pretty big stones (and possibly need a change of pants). I'd have been terrified to do that, I know that hydro cut the flow of water to help stabilize the car but that's no guarantee that it won't start moving while he's in there. I'm sorry he had to do that.
Amazing I saw this whole thing
RESPECT.
That's one hell of a place to park!
Canada will have your back too always!
Hurray for "toxic masculinity" and "toxic femininity" if they were in that crew. I haven't read anything about the other crew members on that dangerous mission.
The official motto of the USCG is "Semper Paratus" - Always Ready. But their unofficial motto, the one they live by is "You have to go out, but you don't have to come back."
I believe that police, fire and other first responders live by that motto too. Kudos to all of them.
They are the best to save people !
Right back atcha USA boys..! You are OUR greatest allie and neighbour...thank you
That driver must gave their double vax
How did the car get there ??
These guys are heroes 👍👏👏👏🇺🇸 even if its a sad outcome
To the people asking how the car got in there and what happened to the occupant, Have you never heard of a google search?
WOW GOD BLESS THOSE WHO CAME TO RESCUE AND THE PERSON BEING RESCUED.GOD BLESS THEM ALL.
I hope whoever is in that car gets find millions of dollars for the environmental hazard they did in for attempted murder on The rescuers that came to save them I think this kind of stuff is ridiculous there's no possible way you could accidentally wind up in that River going over those falls this is an intentional act and that person needs to be charged sentenced and executed
The person died.
I'd like to know how the hell she got there was it suicide or what
@@randyclement2429 she committed suicide there a section where you can drive over to the falls and it is not gated she drove her car into the falls.
Well done
Uhh... the whole time, nothing on the outcome or survivors or how the car got there in the 1st place???
My worst two childhood phobias...rushing water and heights LOL! These guys are incredible. What happened to the car?
The car drifted and eventually went over the falls.
So sad about the lady and for her family for their loss, just sad.I wonder what was wrong!!
I don't understand why the lady picked such a public and hazardous method of suicide if the reports are true that she did this deliberately.
Easy to do and you know no one nearby can attempt a rescue
@@harhem Presumably every method ever chosen by anyone was "easy" in their personal estimation at that moment so that's a totally moot point. If any consideration was being made regarding possible rescue attempts then it's possibly ruling out attempts to rescue by most but not all casual bystanders BUT there will always be a massive hazard on the part of the emergency response team. I don't believe consideration for potential rescuers as you seem to be implying plays into the thought process at all.
I don't know what the thought process was and I still don't. Perhaps just spontaneous bad judgement. She could have done something in her own home with no risk to others. This seems like a kind of attention seeking gone wrong but not sure.
How did a car wind up in there?
3 tours, 3 different type units (Small boat station Lake St Clair, Icebreaker and District 9 HQ), @1:10.. I can back that statement up 100%. We would respond to a Canadian citizen in need without hesitation.
Even bigger question, how’d the car get there?
She drove it in
How the hell she went there? 🤔
Why is this a puff piece about the U.S coast guard... and not the poor woman who died in the car?
Why did they go via London, Ontario? Where were they coming from ?
I just came across this video and your question. The USCG Helicopter came from the USCG Air Station at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Mt Clemens Michigan which is just outside Detroit. The Helicopter flew into Ontario Canada and over London Ontario while flying to Niagara Falls. The Helicopter is a MH 65 Dolphin which is a Medium range Rescue Chopper for the USCG. It would have just enough fuel to get to Niagara Falls do the rescue them return to base in Michigan. It's possible that they refueled in London but if so I believe the crew would've mentioned that in the interviews. There have been instances where USCG choppers have made Rescues in Ontario and needed to be refueled in London. I'm Not a Member of the USCG but always like to hear about their Rescues so I've read up on how they do Rescues. Also as the Pilot said the USCG often works with their Canadian Counterparts in the RCAF SAR teams. The Canadian equivalent of a USCG rescue swimmer are called SAR techs and are very highly skilled in Rescues like their American Counterpart Rescue Swimmers. Hope all this information helped to answer your question👍
How the hell did she manage to get her car there
That's opening up???
HEROES🙏
That was a 2018 Toyota Camry sedan. A rather nice car. Too bad the owner didn't have the frame of mind to do that with an old clunker. If payments were still being made on it, the loan/lease company is screwed now; they'll have to collect from her estate some time from now, especially if the will has to be probated. Other thought: rather sad that she didn't get the help she needed to overcome the urge to suicide. Mental health awareness is becoming a major player in society today and we should all be thankful for that.
Lmao the news person sounds like the lady from family guy. Lmao.
Sad. Sad. Sad
Sad sad sad
I live here
28 yrs old and he's been with them for over a decade??.. Hmmm.. 17yrs old in Coast Gaurd?..
My thoughts exactly
@@Kitathegang Yeah, you can join at 17. Probably still mom or dad to okay it.
Sad I live here rip
Not heros to the lady who wanted to die
Right? It's crazy how hey car got do far into the river. She must of tried to commit. Very selfish and sad. She didn't even know that strangers cared enough to save her
Uh-huh. And how much do we have to pay for this glorious, socialism-free Murkan service?
