The True Story Of ECW's Dying Days

- Extreme Championship Wrestling notably made its home in Philadelphia throughout its lifetime, but on January 13, 2001, the fabled revolution died in Pine Bluff, of all places. A crowd of 1300 probably didn't realize it going in, but they witnessed the final ever ECW event, the culmination of a sad and torturous decline for the promotion that once defined pro wrestling's rebellious spirit.

One day, you and all your childhood friends went out to play for the last time, but no one knew it yet. That was ECW.
That's deep. And it's true.
Man.........ain't that some philosophical shit right there???
@@Dark_AbsoI it’s from the sandlot film 😂
@@Lostmymind1 from the sandlot film
Nah we all knew it was the last time we’d play together
It's insane that ROH and Impact/TNA have longer lifespans than ECW.
They always had more money backing them than ecw. Ppl think fans cheering keep a show going lol
Money marks are backing them.
@@MarquisLeary34 Money marks?
Like Sinclair Broadcasting, or Panda Energy?
@@LuckyDT Eeeeyup.
Roh have the finances from Sinclair, impact/tna have panda energy before and anthem now. Ecw expected support from tnn /spike tv but spike just used ecw so that they could lure wwf
Too big to be small time too small to be big time, thst quote is perfect for ecw
Paul Heyman 2005 Ecw one night stand
"This is not wwf,wcw or wwe this is fuckin E..C..W"
that brought a smile to my face
How was Paul Heyman never beat up? 7 weeks without pay? Jeez.
At least he was smart enough to at least pay new jack or he might’ve been more than beat up
Because ppl who make comments like this really anit about that
@@GreyRoseTV well New Jack said they bumped heads afew times and said I chase you around your car with a knife and knowing New Jack he would done that
I'm pretty sure it was attempted a few times. Heyman was cautious about where he went and with whom came with him towards the end of ECW, per a couple shoot interviews at least.
His father was a lawyer
It’s insane to believe just how much Vince believed in ECW going as far as paying out of pocket to keep them afloat and fighting for them to stay on air against fucking VIACOM of all companies lol
He needed there talent for his future
@@freedom2084 that’s one reason for sure. ECW was like an early version of NXT of sorts as Heyman mentioned on his documentary.
Lazy Eye That’s the only reason
@@freedom2084 Not really. Vince had an odd respect for ECW. Not only allowing them to take over Raw in 1997, but even sending Jerry Lawler there to help build an inter-company program.
@@denniswilliams6519 If he kept Heyman close and made sure guys got paid reasonably on time, they'd be less likely to go work for Bischoff.
Imagine if the ECW faithful found out that the promotion was partly being kept afloat by Vince, at the time.
It was actually pretty obvious! The dirt sheets exposed it...but all the cross over talent and pushing each others shows and wwe promoting barely legal..made it obvious. I knew it.
Most of us didn’t know it. My friends and I didn’t read the dirt sheets often
It was fairly well known and talked about. Most smart fans knew

i remember finding ecw on tv at 3am on a friday night in 1997 when i was 13. i was hooked! you had be there in its hayday to know just how amazing it was. it was fresh and new at the time compared to wwf and wcw.
I discovered in a similar way, in 1996 or so. It was right in the middle of Sandman vs Raven when they brought Sandman's kid into it. I was like "why is there a kid there? Holy shit, did I just see someone get stabbed? This is WAY better than Raw!"
3 in the morning on Sunshine Network (then called SportsChannel Florida). ECW LOVED the South Florida area. If I was only 5 or so years older, I would have went to their shows.
I was 11 in 97 watching it at 1 am on friday night/Sat morning on the local UPN or Cox/Fuse. RVD was starting to rise. The triple threat, Taz going after Bam Bam and Shane. Dudleys being biggest assholes ever
I seen that same time slot in 1995 and it was amazing. I still liked WWF better it was just very new and back to the stone age type of wrestling. No fireworks no lasers or flashy crap. The promos are filmed in a basement. It was bizarre.
Massachusetts, it was on the Spanish channel, for some reason it turned English for ecw
I miss those days scanning the tube tv late at night and stumbling across a dingy pictured ECW, or other local wrestling promotions like MCW music city wrestling etc. Good times
mid 00s ROH is the closest post ECW thing to capture its feeling for me.
2003 TNA. Literally everybody from ECW appeared there.
Agreed
09 ECW
Considering how ROH was formed because RF Video needed a new sellers after ECW died, I think it's safe to say ROH is *the* spiritual successor.
@@treflosho Heymen said that the group of guys that started Ring of Honor would have been the next ones to come into ECW. ECW would have evolved into what ROH presented along with TNA's X-Division. The ECW product in its last year or two was already headed in that direction.
Really liked the opening for this video, that little cinematic was great!
"they were missing top stair JIMMY DEAN MINIS"

I got one for pregnancy tests
Funny you never mentioned HEAD HEAD HEAD. I never saw a crowd so lit when Al Snow came out with head and had prodigy playing.
^^^^ This^^^^!
I wasn't even a teenager when this promotion ended, but I still remember it so fondly.... goddam I'm getting old....
I'm 38 and I don't feel old 😄🤫
@@richard7645cuz that's not old
If Heyman would’ve hired an accountant he’d still be in business
My love of wrestling has not been the same since ECW folded. Growing up 20 miles outside of Philly I was raised in McMahon territory and paid little attention to WCW.
My first exposure to ECW was finding it on local TV. My first ECW match was Raven and Richards vs The Pitbulls in a 2/3 falls double dog collar match for the titles. It blew anything that I had seen previously away.
I saw them do local CYO shows, went to their autograph signings at the mall, saw John Kronus at my sister's high school graduation and at the airport, proudly wore my bWo shirt to middle school, and loved every minute of it.
Please get a hobby 🤣 its not that serious
@@sweetpetergedaplease shut up. To him it was. I dont care about meeting wrestlers or action figures or shirts, just matches. That's his business what he does not yours.
I heard Corino litterally signed with WCW the day after Guilty as Charged '01
He did and unfortunately that went out of business and he was wrestling in Japan, ROH and MLW
@@Kas58223 I liked his work in mlw a lot
I once saw Corino doing a wrestling show here in Finland in the mid 00's for FCF. He went one-on-one against a local talent Starbuck in the main event.
@@mitchellima4736 I enjoyed the fact that he recreated a version of the four horsemen called the extreme horsemen
Just imagine a world where Heyman has McMahon levels of money. That’s my happy place.
and it ends with heyman going bankrupt
@@williamschaeffer409 why must you piss on my dreams!? 😭😆
He still probably wouldn't pay his wrestlers
Herman's a bigger snake than Vince and he would have still found a way to fuck it all up
If Heyman had McMahon money, ECW would have sucked. The crappy production, the dingy bingo hall, the ripped off music, is what made it great.
Heyman shouldn't have tried to go head to head with the majors.
I worked security at the pine bluff event. Until now, didn't know it was the last event for ECW
My guess is that Scott Hall was trying to do the boys a favor by working a couple of shows for free while letting Heyman promote him on the cards so they could make enough at the gate to get some guys paid.
Fun fact about the last ppv was that the main event came close to not happening. RVD wanted an upfront payment from Heyman before the show, IN CASH. He didn't get it. Jerry Lynn found about before the show that he was only going to get paid half and came not prepaid to work. Not even bringing his tights. He also wanted his full payment upfront, which he got. So if you're wondering why their match was weak from their other previous matches, its cause neither guy wanted to be there.
You mean exactly what was mentioned in the video?
I believe it
Was watching ECW right up to its dying day at the end of 2000 on Bravo straight after Raw on Friday nights 😎
*2001
Cool story chico
I remember Bravo 🙋♂️
I love these little docuseries type vids
Parts of Rollerball being filmed in Lethbridge, Alberta really says a lot about how that film turned out lol
I was at the poplar bluff Missouri show!!! The show had only about 1000 ppl in a 5000 seat facility but everyone had a good time and the talent put on a good show.
I went to each of the last two shows but I'm not sure if the attendance is a fair illustration. Jason...maybe you can answer this for me...did Poplar Bluff get any channels out of Cape or anywhere that carried Hard Core TV? The same question applies for anyone out of Pine Bluff, Ark. If neither market carried the syndicated show I wonder if ECW would have drawn all that many people regardless. I like both towns but they are somewhat limited market size. Regardless, I remember enjoying both shows and it was a heck of a weekend road trip for sure
Like joeallan said, in San Diego, I would watch ECW Hardcore TV on FS1 at like 1am... I was hooked. That was in the 90s... It was really sad to watch ECW fall apart😢
What blows my mind is that Tommy Dreamer told a story of when he saw Heyman on Raw, he actually thought about literally killing him and than killing himself. Thank god that never happened.
I went to every ECW event when they came home to philly, fun times
Were you anywear near hat guy
Lucky git! 🤣
Justin's writing and Jack's presenting is a dream duo. Great video guys!
The nail in the coffin for ECW was Van Dam breaking his leg
That's so true! I was watching 2000 ecw for the first time on the wwe network earlier this year and they were building to a huge champion vs champion rvd/mike awesome ppv match. Then rvd had to suffer his first serious injury of his career at the worst possible time. not only did ecw lose out on a huge money maker, but it also caused mike awesome to continue to not get paid consistently and then consequently leave for wcw without giving any notice.
God, with the way Corgan figured out Heyman tried to swindle him, you realize Paul was his own worst enemy.
I’m from Pittsburgh. I’m so glad I got to see quite a few shows during the great years of ECW. Some of the best memories I have from live wrestling events.
All do respect, this video was waaaaaay too short, this is the type of content the WWE puts on a 3 disk documentary
I disagree. This is supposed to be short and to the point. Of you are looking for longer videos sorta in this vein check out wrestling bios. Great youtuber
@@mitchellima4736 I know I just want to watch more Cultaholic on this type of subject and I love Wrestling Bios, he’s probably the best out there
Tommy Dreamer is the Sting of ECW
How so?
The t-shirt?
@@LuckyDT to my knowledge, they were both super loyal to their brands (sting with wcw and dreamer with ecw) to the point of taking lower paying jobs rather than working with/for WWE until they couldn't.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong! I've been a wrestling fan for a long time, but I'm new to trying to learn about the history of the sport and promotions instead of just watching matches.

Heyman was in wwe at the time he started filming Rollerball, he already became on air colour commentator, they had him appear with Shane as part of a wwe contract to promote the movie on their shows and in things like magazines and on the website. There!
Fantastic job on the in depth research.
One person I just never "got" from ECW was Tommy Dreamer...I just don't get why he was so popular in ECW at all. His popularity and success certainly didn't carry over to WWE.
He gave his all and the crowd respected that. He really won their respect when he took 10 lashes from The Sandmans kendo stick at Hardcore Heaven 94.
I LOVE CULTAHOLIC.
Great video, Jack! 👏🏼👏🏼
These are always great to watch
The people that didn’t work there are giving us the ‘TRUE’ story
That's the theme when it comes to information.
Thank you Jack 😁 Great video
If ECW never wasted money on action figures and video games and if they had a late evening spot on a network that actually supported and advertised them, it could have lasted longer.
They almost got a deal with USA after WWF left, but the head of USA was like nah we aint airing wrestling anymore (which backfired horribly)
@@phenomenalone7134 I truly wish that Vince McMahon would have kept ECW as his developmental brand instead of incorporating it into the Invasion angle back in 2001. Just imagine how great ECW could have been if it had access to all the wrestling talent that didn't go to WWE at that time! Nwa Tna may have never been created, and ECW could have had the most successful years in its history!
Those things brought them money. It actually says so in the video.
well researched and informational, thank you
1:29 What's with using a random picture of the XPW crew from Heatwave 2000?
The bedding music in this video gives me massive Evil Morty reveal vibes.
I live 20 minutes from Pine Bluff. I can totally believe ECW died there. Probably a person shot per day, lol.

Once again.......STORYTIME!!!!!
Ok let's be real....the reason ecw went out business is bc Paul was stealing the money and spending it crazy instead of paying talent and the essential bills. Its no big secret its no mystery.
I get mad when people call ECW wrestling garbage wrestling. It 100% had that, BUT, it also had the best Matt wrestling, RVD, Benoit, Eddy... The best Lucas, exposing many Americans, myself included, to the style. The hottest promos at the time as well. So much more then garbage wrestling...
Very well done video
Rob Van Dunkin Donuts.... Dam
I never understood how ECW couldn't get big sponsors when Raw was doing the same hardcore shit.
Tv production . Btw ECW was way more extreme
other than Tommy Dreamer, were there any wrestlers that stayed with ECW from Shane Douglas throwing down the belt to it's death?
new jack?
@@MetalMe55iah even newer Jack said in the video he left back end of 2000. I mean he basically stayed the whole time but I’m curious if anyone else did a full Tommy Dreamer
Was Justin credible there back then?
Tommy Dreamer and Little Guido are the only ones I can think of that never left and were there from that timeline and even the RF video guys as well.
@@1992geop cheers Bryan. Just checked and Little Guido was with them from ‘92 until the death, only taking a brief break in ‘95 according to Wikipedia.
Proud to be from the state ECW had its last show
I remember in the 90s me and my siblings arguing with my Dad to let us watch WWF. He was a tight arse and considered it a bad influence... I can't imagine what he would have said if he caught us watching ECDUB.
It’s a shame that today, most organizations won’t go as far as ECW did during their Golden Era. As far as Safety Regulations & Health Restrictions, we won’t see Flaming Tables, Cheese Graters, or even a simple Head Shot with a Steel Chair. It’s just because these days, Health Insurances for Wrestlers are not only ridiculously expensive, but also because of long term, and they just don’t wanna see another Chris Benoit incident.
Now I can see why Tommy Dreamer wanted to put Paul E down, lol.
20 years already, gddm!!
In demand actually owed ECW a couple of million, which if paid would of allowed ECW to continue for awhile longer. However the president refused to pay because ECW couldn’t afford to take them to court and with bankruptcy proceedings, in demand would only have to pay out a fraction of it. Heyman was close to a deal with fox but needed the money from in demand in order to be able to produce the first couple of shows to close the deal.
ECW on Fox?
@@TimmyTickle most likely they would be on the FX channel.

I had no idea that Simon Dean was an ECW Original!😲
FOR REAL SABU WAS ECW FOR ME!!! Once they lost RVD, Dudley's, Tazz, Raven, the FUCKING WORLD CHAMPION AT THE TIME Mike Awesome, etc... REALLY STUCK THE NAIL IN THE COFFIN, I LOVED ECW but I knew it was OVER once all those guys were left and we had like Danny Doring & Roadkill as TAG CHAMPS which is the division that REALLY BUILT ECW & KEPT IT AFLOAT doing main event matches SMFH🤦♂️🤦♂️😵☠🚬🍾💸
And Wrestling has never been the same again.
MLW is kind of filling the hole they left. It's not the same, but satisfies my craving for no BS wrestling, that feels and looks real.
I feel like ECW wasn’t much more E than WWF at the time. All those chair shots to the head etc

Only Arkansas XP much thanks and safety to this lovely cult!
Living in the Philadelphia region channel 19 on Saturday nights. 40 minutes of advertising for the best 20 minutes of wrestling. I always watched it with my pops.
ECW 2021 everyone! Billychuck Jones is the best ECW wrestler of all time
I look at ecw as a necessary evil. It changed wrestling in the 90s for the better by getting away from the family friendly stuff that ruled the 80s. But it cost lives and body's to do so. How meny old school ecw guys are still alive. I think foley put it best. "Theres 4 ways you leave ecw: a drunk, a drug addict, a cripple or a corpse."
Drunk: Sandman
Drug addict: RVD
Cripple: Foley/New Jack
Corpse: Erich “Mass Transit” Kulas
@@TimmyTickle well corpse could be 90% of the ecw lockeroom

TNA in the beginning was pretty much ECW and WCW together which was a good alternative to WWE, even crazier I believe TNA started in 02, WCW and ECW closed in 01 but it felt like years after that happened...btw do anyone remember the match between Tazz vs Tajiri where tazz choked him with bared wire in his mouth... I cant find that anywhere for yrs
I remember that match it was brilliant think it was on a living dangerously

I did. You didn't miss much with the sole exception of the final match of the first airing.
I was at this show.... Anarchy in Arkansas! I had no idea that this would be their swan song
This is nuts because ECW had the best roster of talent. The majority of them left and was successful in other promotions like Tommy Dreamer, Raven, Lance Storm, RVD, Dudley Boys, Justin Credible, etc. Hayman didn’t handle the business correctly.
I thought this was a wrestling bios video
