When we speak about the clave, if you like salsa then you will know that the first thing that comes to mind is dancing. You may ask yourself: Is it possible to dance just by listening to the clave or do you need to hear the whole orchestra in order to feel the rhythm and begin to dance?

you can have many different people say the same thing and then someone gets through to you. In 3-2 son clave- the one beat and four beat are silent : 2and 3 back to back ( First Measure) then the 1st beat and 4th beat with the middle of the measure a beat or in between the 2nd and 3 rd beat. Confused, you and a thousand others.

Question:
If you listen to a part in the middle of a Salsa song and you hear the clave sounds - how to know which one is first? How to know if its a 2-3 clave or a 3-2 clave if you missed the beginning of the song? Is there a longer break somewhere between 3-2 and 3 or 2-3 and 2?

My friend...the clave is giving you the base....doesn't matter is you haven't heard the beginning....you can listen only the middle and you can understand it.
To understand it ...is not easy every time because the musicians playing a lot when they write the music, but if you don't hear the clave...follow other instruments, or lyrics or the singer, or the choreo.....all pf them they based on the clave....and some exercise you can do to help yourself is.....
Put a song and when you dont hear the clave you sing inside of you the 2/3 clave and then the 3/2 clave and check what it fits with the music...but remember every time something are more strong on the music and is based on clave...and there are songs that changing the clave from in the middle of the song!!!!
