  • Step by step instructions how to change the engine oil and oil filter in a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer and how to reset the oil life indicator light.
    Expense:
    Dealership estimate: $60-$75 for a full synthetic oil change
    DIY: approximately $65 depending on auto parts stores' specials.
    I typically allocate an hour to do an oil change but it can easily be done in less time.

    Just gorgeous. A woman who knows her way around a vehicle is priceless. My favorite part which everyone has for some reason forgot about is to add a little oil before installing the oil filter good job indeed 👍

      Thank you for your kind words! And yes, you are absolutely right about adding a little oil before installing the oil filter. I never do this because I almost always drop the filter at least once when trying to thread it back on lol.

    You can buy those disposable vomit bags(blue), cheap on Amazon. Once you break the oil filter loose, use the bag to enclose it and twist it all the way off. All the oil will go in the bag. Keeping everything clean. You can even keep the bag for next oil change.
    There should be an opening on that splash guard that gives you access to the drain bolt. No need to remove the splash guard (at least on my 2006).
    Nice job!

    Easy Oil Filter Access - jack and remove passenger tire. There is an opening in the frame and you can use a strap wrench for loosening and removing the filter. Works for all of these SUV 's.

      Gotta get under to get to the drain bolt anyway but geez, removing a wheel just for a filter is crazy but if you don't have the right filter wrench, like one shown here, you'd have to do it that way.

    I commend you on your choice of vehicles. I still drive my 2005 TB. It's on its third engine. I bought it used in 2007 with around 15,000 miles on it.

    • @voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885
      @voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885 Před 2 lety

      wow third engine? I have 268K on the same engine on an 04. The car hauled fruit for my job - it was full of fresh fruit boxes - and I had to get the brakes and suspension fixed a lot from that job. Otherwise the engine seems great - I just did a PVC hose port clean out - with B12 Berryman - and also put that B12 Berryman in the fuel tank - and now my mileage is the best the MPG has ever been. Kind of wild. We did get oil changes at 3K miles almost always - I think went past it a couple times only.

    • @sunneblues
      @sunneblues Před rokem +2

      Love my 2005 TB!!! 238K +miles. Original engine, but tyranny rebuild earlier this year. It's a solid beast as long as it's taken care of.
      I see so many TBs still on the road in great condition. The new vehicles can't compare. Newer craps are built to fail. But these road warriors 💪🦾

    • @voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885
      @voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885 Před rokem

      @@sunneblues someone posted on another Vortec 4200 turbo channel that they regularly push their TrailBlazer to 6000 RPM and hold it there and the engine does fine!! I haven't tried this and I don't plan it - as I'm assuming that's way beyond the speed limit. hahaha. Still the torque on this straight or inline six energy really kicks in soon - the 2000 rpm studies published in 2002 or so on this Vortec 4200 engine shows it better than the V8 5.3 liter engine at the time. So the fact that Chevy is now producing a new straight six engine with twin turbo proves this engine has stood the test of time.

    One thing many do is add oil directly to the new filter before the installation to prevent any possibility of running the engine without any oil at all. It would be easy with a vertical mount. Horizintal mounting can be more of a challenge.

    Oil and grease might not be good on your skin, some rubber or latex gloves would be a good idea. I hate it when the oil filter spills the oil up my arm and into my shoulder, especially if I have a long sleeve shirt or coveralls. Great job! 👍

    GM engineers need to be strung up for that filter location. Worst one I've ever done. You have about the only filter wrench that can work in there. It's not a direct straight shot. Requires long extensions. The last time I did a trailblazer I had oil down both arms, and on my cheek clear into my ear!

      Ideally, find a level spot to do the oil change. But if you have to choose, based on the shape of the oil pan and location of the plug, I suggest whichever way gets the front end lower (sounds like forward in?). And do not jack it up. Check the oil level afterwards on level ground, of course. Hope it goes well!
