    Hey there, A bunch of us shell collectors were recently told that it is illegal to remove any kind of coral (even dead coral) from Florida beaches. Is this true? We were all pretty upset about this. Now I’m second guessing what we were told, especially since with you being a Florida resident, you would know. Can you clear the air for us? Thanks so much❤️

      Well now you have me wondering. I just went down a coral rabbit hole and the information isn't clear. I believe it is fine to collect DEAD coral you find on the beach, however I put a call into FWC to see if I can get a real answer for you. I'm curious as well now too, so I will report back when I hear back from them 🤔

      I just checked and it is not illegal to remove dead coral pieces from the beaches of Florida.
      “The harvest of live-rock, substrate with living organisms attached, is illegal unless harvested at a licensed aquaculture area.”
      Only live coral and dead coral that have live sea creatures attached.

      @@777sgiles I’ve been digging in that same rabbit hole as Sharmon. According to the Florida Marine Resources Act (FMRA) & also the Florida Administrative Code Chapter 68B-42 “declares it unlawful to take or possess any coral dead or alive from the waters of Florida including shores, beaches, and adjacent lands.” This sounds pretty cut & dry to me, I don’t know. Maybe Sharmon will find something different. We all hope so. 🤗

      Isn't she just? I, too, amaze my friends by knowing so many names of shells. Knowing the names of things in nature is a family tradition handed down from my maternal grandfather who was a farmer. Maybe a little ahead of his time bc he insisted that it showed respect for the land to know the names of things: cardinal not red bird, narcissi not flowers, flounder not fish, etc. Enjoy your beach time with your son - happy memories.

    Good evening, Beach Angel and all present!
    I think those funky shells should be called biscuit shells, as they resemble unbaked biscuits!
    I like the yellow to orange oyster shell! Makes me think of the nightly colored scallop shells.
    Neat seeds and fun to think about how far they've travelled!
    It's always so sad to see the Man O' War stranded and dead. Their sails carry them where they don't want to go sometimes.
    A few years before I married my late husband, I had a chance to go to Ft. Walton Beach on the panhandle of Florida. There were hundreds of sea cucumbers washed up on the beaches, their deaths staining the pure white sand violet and purple. Nobody could get into the water, there were so many. The emerald water was dyed purple and stained the skin of anyone venturing into it. It made me so sad!
    Those spectral bittersweets are so cute! Love that limpet!
    This seemed like you had a fun day shelling at Pelican Pavilion after all! Thanks for taking us along!

      I'm glad I didn't have my heart set on being on the beach at a certain time. The state park didn't open until 8am - so I only had to wait about 10 minutes to get out there. I was rather surprised to find out it was a state park at the end of that road! I should have know better considering the lack of homes. What a story of all those sea cucumbers. Very sad indeed. There is a weird thing going on with the fish in The Keys. They are spinning out. Someone has asked me a few weeks ago if I had heard anything and at the time I hadn't. I hope they figure it out. I worry for our coral reefs and the acidification of our oceans.

    Your shell at 2:30 is a Thin Cyclinella. I was there in February and the beach was littered with them. It looks like you found a combination of Wavy Bittersweets and Decussate Bittersweets. You'd have to look into that a little further. Let's Talk Seashells does a great job distinguishing between the two. It's a great resource. 24:18 is a Hoof Snail and 27:20 is a Pretty Jewel Box. Hope this was helpful.

I've definitely been there before, but I find it hard to navigate.

    What a fun trip to Florida's "other" coast this week! We were on the beach at Emerald Isle NC over Easter weekend, after a big storm went through, and we found more shells than I've EVER seen in 50+ years of going to that beach in spring and summer. Heaps of big cockle shells, olives, baby's ears, buttercup lucenes, bay and calico scallops, a partial sharks eye that was nearly fist sized, a couple of whelks, lots of spiral ends of pear whelks, and a couple things that I think shouldn't have been this far north -- a helmet shell (with a piece out of it, but it came home with me anyway) and a couple of nutmegs. Still wasn't the equal of shelling on Sanibel, but it was absolutely amazing for this area! I came off that first beach walk just buzzing. What can I make from a big stack of Atlantic cockle shells? Maybe a wreath?

    The colours of the shells were so pretty and bright. Such striking designs.
    You did find different wonderful things, even though it was slim pickings.
    You had to try.
    It is amazing how many goggles you found and a mask, a plastic bottle, a plastic hair bands, bracelet, etc.
    So that was good to get that off the beach.
    Last year I went to a beach 30kms south west of Rome.
    It was packed in summer. It amazes me how much garbage people leave on the beach. 😢
    There was a huge piece of plastic, like a sheet of long plastic that I picked up off the beach. They have bins with signs on them for beach garbage. Nobody was bothered by the plastic, not even the life guards.
    If that got deep into the water on the tide going out, it would have been a hazard. For our marine life and humans.
    Every bit we do, helps.
    Thanks for another very interesting video on the East coast this time.

    @shellstories Před 4 měsíci

    I think many of the little white clams you saw are the dosinia lucines (also called dosinia-like-lucines). The star shell is definitely a long spine one, still a bucket list shell for me. I also think those jewel boxes are the leafy species. There's just so much variability, and most of the shells look at least a little bit different from each other. That shell at 24:15 looks like some sort of anomaly. I would guess jewel box and not an imperial, but it's really strange how the ridges aligned so similarly. I think given the variability it's not impossible to find "one of a kind" shells like that once in a while. Those east coast shells are so tricky when they all get worn down like that!

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 4 měsíci

      I think if I found those jewelboxes regularly I wouldn't struggle so much to ID them, but when they're a little worn down it gets pretty tricky. That stacked weird shell was indeed a neat find. And I spent a bit of time with my bivalve book with this video - I couldn't believe there is a dosinia lucine! I really like the cross-hatched versions 😃

    I loved your excitement about the Sundial! I'm a SWF sheller and that's a bucket list shell for me (rarely found on Sanibel where I shell the most).
    My stepson just got married in Costa Rica March 21st, and I got to go shelling at the resort a few of the days we were there. I found 3 beautiful colored Sundials, I freaked out!! I also found a cowrie shell which was another first for me. I really do appreciate SWF shelling though, nothing compares!
    I'm heading to the JW Marriot on Marco for work in June (which I will shell past the jetty on South Beach if I can get a low enough tide), and then I'm extending my trip and heading to Sanibel for a few nights. I can't wait to be back in SWF shelling!! My last visit was in December to Tween Waters, found my first whole lions paw, a bright orange/red little baby!

    Happy Easter, Sharmon! Well this was a different shelling adventure. All those goodies you brought home were so different. Yet as I remember, you didn't find any gastropods, only bivalves. I must say that when my husband and I go to Florida we will definitely want to shell on the west coast. The gastropods are my favs for the most although I can picture myself collecting plenty of beach bowls and calico clams. Thank you for sharing your adventure with all of us. Question: do you ever get Man O Wars or dangerous jellyfish on the west coast beaches? If so, what time of year do they show up?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 4 měsíci

      I have never seen a manowar on the West Coast. My understanding is on the East Coast during the windy January and February months all sorts of neat creatures, including manowars, will end up on the beaches. I know on the West Coast the summer is typically when you'll see jellyfish. I have seen jellyfish I would not want to be stung by, along with rays and other stinging creatures but thus far, I have yet to be stung by anything 🙏🏼 Well, except for that time I went to Jamaica and I got stung by an urchin.
