  • democracynow.org - Could tension between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un bring us to the brink of nuclear war? As tensions ramp up, we discuss what nuclear war would look like with a former nuclear war planner and one of the world’s most famous whistleblowers-Daniel Ellsberg. In 1971, Ellsberg was a high-level defense analyst when he leaked a top-secret report on U.S. involvement in Vietnam to The New York Times and other publications, which came to be known as the Pentagon Papers. He played a key role in ending the Vietnam War. Few know Ellsberg was also a Pentagon and White House consultant who drafted plans for nuclear war. His new book, published Tuesday, is titled “The Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner.” We speak with Ellsberg about his top-secret nuclear studies, his front row seat to the Cuban missile crisis, whether Trump could start a nuclear war and how contemporary whistleblowers Chelsea Manning and Ed Snowden are his heroes.

I think it may be time for humanity to step aside and let a new species evolve to govern the planet, we are clearly not up to the task.

A chilling interview. At over 80 years of age, I'm old enough to remember the drills in school that had us "duck and cover," i.e. get under your desk. Given the terrifying scenario described in the Ellsberg interview (and in his book, which I just read), the proper drill is to "bend over, stick your head between your legs, now kiss you ass goodby!" We now have two psychopaths with their short, fat, stubby fingers on the nuclear button. I believe it was Einstein who said: "The ultimate fate of mankind is that he will civilize himself to death.

incapable of comprehending this reality that I thought perhaps getting right to the "pictures" might spark some interest or understanding.

With Chernobyl, Fukushima and whatever happened in the Russian Ural's a few weeks ago, nuclear war effects have already started. In the next 10 years more nuclear power plants will experience failures and catastrophic releases due to the age of the facilities. Not to mention all the atmospheric, underwater and underground nuclear testing over the last 70 years.

[Turgidson advocates a further nuclear attack to prevent a Soviet response to Ripper's attack]
General "Buck" Turgidson: Mr. President, we are rapidly approaching a moment of truth both for ourselves as human beings and for the life of our nation. Now, truth is not always a pleasant thing. But it is necessary now to make a choice, to choose between two admittedly regrettable, but nevertheless *distinguishable*, postwar environments: one where you got twenty million people killed, and the other where you got a hundred and fifty million people killed.
President Merkin Muffley: You're talking about mass murder, General, not war!
General "Buck" Turgidson: Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed. But I do say no more than ten to twenty million killed, tops. Uh, depending on the breaks.
President Merkin Muffley: I will not go down in history as the greatest mass-murderer since Adolf Hitler.
General "Buck" Turgidson: Perhaps it might be better, Mr. President, if you were more concerned with the American People than with your image in the history books.

My God! Why have individuals developed these weapons without any forethought of the catastrophic ends? What good could come from specific inventions? How intelligent can one be who creates self destruction? WTH is wrong with humanity? We are supposed to be motivated by self preservation. Clearly, some of us are dysfunctional. Sadly, the dysfunctional among us are running the country. God help us all!

Given the state of the World and the reality that we are seeing unfold before us, one has to ask the legitimate question if this is what we all deserve. Decades of reports, artistic depictions of the savagery of the modern age, and the willful abandonment of responsibility by the public towards real politics for never ending childhood has brought us to this point. The final click of the guillotine has sounded, it is primed and ready to fall. The populations of the world will not react in time, they are distracted by the transcendent spectacle of the curtains being pulled back to reveal the mad machine that we have built. The blade will fall, and the universe will continue to spin as it always has, unknowing, unloving, and indifferent to what transpired here.

If I am understanding this correctly; This guy made copies of top secret information and has shared the content of that information with the public and he's not been tried and convicted of breaching national security? Something isn't adding up here. Exploiting sensitive military information is a criminal act which could result in capital punishment depending on the situation.
