Your intuition about Moss not surviving was on point. I was so invested in his plight I didn't want to believe he could die. Btw, Bardem said to the Cohen brothers that he'd probably not get laid for a year because of that haircut.

“Why? Why?” Shooting at an animal from a motor vehicle is a Coenism that also occurs is “Raising Arizona” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou.” Commandeering a pick up truck also occurs in “Raising Arizona.” I always hear the “vanity” speech as deriving from the Bhagavad Gita. I always think of the film’s last line as being said by The Buddha.

I'm a Texan & i love this movie, the book too. Not much difference inthe two, much of the dialogue is verbatim. When they filmed it "there will be blood" was being filmed in the same area. NCFOM had to delay shooting a scene because of the smoke plumes from TWBB. Another great movie with Daniel Day Lewis.

It goes to show how messed up the world truly is. Those group of drunk teens wouldn't help Llewelyn without payment, while Anton gets immediate help from those kids without even needing to offer them anything. Bad people get more help and reward than good people. That's our world.

Javier Bardem's portrayal of Anton Chigurh was just brilliant. The cast did a superb job in this near-perfect movie but Bardem's work was stellar. And once again, the Coens show that they are the premiere film makers in the U.S. I love Spielberg and Scorsese but the Coen brothers movies are the only ones that make me think and stay with me long after viewing. The only thing your friend should be worried about is, BAD guys with weapons, and the only thing that will effectively counter bad guys with weapons are GOOD guys with weapons. Try moving into a state where their laws take away weapons from the good guys.....because bad guys will ALWAYS have THEIR weapons no matter what a state law says.

I’m from Los Angeles, living in Mexico now. I’ve been through West Texas and some of those towns in the movie, and I’ve been to some of the Mexican towns on the other side of the river.
There’s something spooky about that country, something not right on either side of the border. Whatever it is, it’s been there long before the drug traffickers, long before the Republic of Texas, before the white settlers and the Spanish missionaries that came before before them.
Maybe it was there before Comancheria, the Comanche Empire. The Comanche spilt a lot of blood, wiping out whole villages and ranches in their raids. And who knows who was there before the Comanches.
It’s beautiful country on both sides of the border. But it feels like a land with an ancient curse under the surface. When I’ve passed through, either going up to Texas or down south into Mexico, I always passed through quickly. I didn’t linger. I had this fear that something could reach up and grab me and hold me there for who knows what devilry.

One thing you have to take into account on why it took him so long to realize there was a tracking device is that this was 1980. Tracking devices were something the FBI or CIA would use. They were not common back then. Certainly not a part of Llewelyn's world anyway. This was also a time when the drug trade in the US had grown exponentially because of the cocaine epidemic. There was a new level of violence on the border and in Miami because of it. Big money and much more sophisticated drug smugglers.

The movie is based a book by the same name written by Corman McCarthy. I have worked in book publishing for nearly 50 years and I know writing, I would strongly encourage you to read the book, it doesn't matter that you now know the plot. It's one of the best movies to books there is, however you will find McCarthy's writing and the psychological depth of this story to be very rewarding. Although this is debated, I am sure Anton Chigurh is a real person but also "fate" thus the coin toss, lack of emotion, inevitability, etc. McCarthy uses the same literary technique in his most famous book "Blood Meridian" with another horrifying character who represents death, blood, and war.
    Loved your reaction.

Your interpretations about this film are really smart and I never really keyed in on how every interaction even with young men, schoolboys even, being asked for a jacket or a shirt is all about the exchange of money and how that sort of theme runs through the story. Although there is a little, very little hope, when one says, "Hell, mister, I'll give you my shirt," but then the two argue about money after Anton escapes so it's really bleak isn't it? I want to recommend the film TRUE ROMANCE (1993) if you haven't seen it. A comment you made me think of that film as well. Great reaction!

One of the best aspects of this movie tgat there is no musical score. It’s pure visual and dialog

A detail most people miss is Anton checking the room he rented - he entered through the door multiple times, to figure out what layout to expect upon flicking the light.
The room he rented mirrors the one the mexican cartel was in.
Beds were on the right in his, in the cartel room they were on the left.
He also checked the thickness of the wall, to see if he can pre-fire through it, to hit whoever is hiding in the bathroom, but in the mirrored room, he made a mistake with the shot placement - the guy with the machine gun was on the other side of the doorway.

No music throughout the movie is what made it interesting.

Was this your first experience with a Coen brothers film? If so, welcome to their quirky world. Pick any film directed or written by Ethan or Joel and you will not be dissapointed. Two of their most popular films are "Fargo" and "Raising Arizona."
This film, "No Country . . ." reminds me of another about trying to keep found money, "A Simple Plan" (1998). The appearance of Woody Harrelson, who played the role of Carson Wells, you also saw in the "Hunger Games" films. You might want to see him in "Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri."
I'm surprised you did react to recognizing Josh Brolin (Lleweyn) from the film "Sicario." You have also seen Tommy Lee Jones (Ed Tom Bell) from the film "Men in Black."
Did you notice there was no music soundtrack?

Your patrons love to torment you Emma. As unfortunate as that is, I'm also here for it 😄 Your intuition is getting better at predicting some of the plot is going to turn out.

The satchel is the same one as the satchel in Fargo - might even be the same movie-prop money too, not sure…

All Cohen brothers movies should be watched! Their first is still the best! A fake trailer that became a movie, Blood Simple!
