Thank you Pawel for investing the time to explain those mechs in detail. You really have dug very deep into the intricacies of their design.
Do you have a recomendation for an oil which you use to lube the pivot points and keep the O-rings happy?

You are very welcome. I personally use silicone spray lubricant. It acts as SBR, rubber conditioner, water rappeler, etc. Oils tend to be to viscose, there isn't much space there. Also they act like a magnet for the dirt. If RD is in good condition, water should not get inside. The biggest enemy of RDs is salt (either from the road, or form cleaning products) The compartment where those pins are rotating is sealed from elements, with two o-rings, if/when they fail that's when problem start.
