In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy will teach you basic attacking concepts that will help you to create successful attacks against the uncastled king.
Summary:
The uncastled king is characterized as following:
- The uncastled king occupies either the initial position or one in the center.
- This area is naturally well accessible which makes it much easier for attacking pieces to get to the king, compared to the position that the king occupies after castling.
In order to perform the attack against the uncastled king efficiently, you should know some basic principles:
- Prevent the king from running away: Whenever you have the chance to prevent your opponentâ s king from castling, do it! Because obviously to start the attack against the uncastled king, the king should stay uncastled before you start your attack.
- Identify and attack the most vulnerable point: How to attack the uncastled king? It is usually helpful to identify the vulnerable squares around the king that you can use for this attack. Typically, the f2- or f7-square (depending on the colour) gives good attacking chances.
- Try to open as many files and diagonals against the king as possible: Why? Because by use of the open files, we can bring our heavy pieces (the rooks) into the attack against the enemy king. Diagonals mean, we can use our bishops. The queen can be used for both, files and diagonals to attack the king. In general, the more exposed the uncastled king, the better for us.
- Donât be afraid of the material imbalance but care about the coordination of the attacking pieces: To bring the queen into the attack against the king in the center is not necessarily that important. What is important, is the coordination of the attacking resources.
- Eliminate the defenders: Think about your opponents best defending pieces/ options and eliminate them when you have the chance to do it.
- Continue the attack aggressively, donât make moves that waste time: If you have the chance to keep on attacking the enemy king, e.g. giving checks or mating threats, just do it, because the less time your opponent has to prepare the escape, the better for you. Start the attack as soon as possible. You should be rather quick starting specific attacking operations.
