  • In 2021, creative partners Gil Kenan (Monster House) and Jason Reitman (Juno) unleashed their reboot, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, honoring the 1980s franchise that forever changed the pop culture zeitgeist. Having served as co-writer on the previous film, Kenan now presents the sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire as director, alongside co-writer Reitman, to continue the story the duo cooked up with the blessing of the OG director, Ivan Reitman.
In Frozen Empire, the ensemble cast that makes up the Spengler family - Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), and Mckenna Grace (The Handmaid's Tale) - and Gary Grooberson, played by Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), take up shop in the Manhattan firehouse. The movie introduces an all-new icy antagonist whose powers threaten the fate of the world, which brings legacy characters back into the fold. Ghostbusters' Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Dan Aykroyd are joined by franchise newcomers Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals), Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille), Celeste O'Connor (Madame Web), and Emily Alyn Lind (Doctor Sleep).
In this interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub, Kenan shares what it was like to pitch Afterlife and Frozen Empire to Ivan Reitman and discusses how much of the storyline and characters they knew about long before production began. The director talks about the origins of Garraka, finding the fine line of thrills and scares, the magic of practical effects on a set, and deleted scenes. For an update on Reitman's SNL 1975 and tons more, check out the video above.

Thank you for mentioning the deleted scenes! Not many people will ask or talk about that so early in a movie's theatrical run. This is what we were all wondering about !

What is Gil talking about? There's lots of stuff missing from the movie that were in the trailers and in the TV spots.

So close to being fantastic. It just needed a longer ending, extended battle maybe in a second location

Bill Murray didn't want to do a Ghostbusters 3 for so very long because he DOES care. Not because he DOESN'T care.

BS thats what he sold you. He didnt want to be known as just the Ghostbusters guy

@@questions9856 -no, he was unhappy with Ghostbusters 2. The movie that was made was not the same as the one he signed up for. He was already The Ghostbusters guy before the 2nd movie ever got filmed. He didn't like the negative reaction to 2

@@edwardjohnson6744 Dude everyone here knows this story. Of course he was off put by GB 2. But to stay away from it for 30+ years, shows he CARES? If it was already ruined why not listen to Dan make another and correct that failure? You have it backwards

@questions9856 - it's well documented. He was about to do it and there was always something that caused it to seem like a bad idea. Most recently as far as "GHOSTBUSTERS 3 SCRIPTS REJECTED BY BILL MURRAY" go, it was when The Office writers and Ivan Reitman as director had the unfortunate flop 'Year One'. If that had been a blockbuster comedy hit, the story might have turned out differently. After that he finally DID agree to a Ghostbusters 3 and THE STUDIO decided against it and Harold Ramis became ill, or maybe BECAUSE of this.

We really need an extended cut to put in those scenes that helped make sense of the story.

Collider is so two faced, they release this fawning, congratulatory, everything is great interview with the films director, after giving it a 5/10 🤷🏻‍♂️.

There needs to be a Extended Cut. So much is missing. I don't know why he's talking nonsense. I can see why he went wrong on editing...too much sourcing of other people's opinions.
If they make another one I hope Jason Reitman returns to the directing chair.

Movie is a disappointment. You can tell there are sooo many scenes that where cut short and that story line with Mel was a damn waste of time and just uncomfortable at one point. (Forced) Is what im looking for. Big baddy of the movie was a damn push over. The red dot ghost (posesser) or whatever had more character and was more of a threat to be honest. Its 5 out of 10 for me.

Felt like Sony was too cowardly to really tell that story with Melody properly. Too much cut out.

Disappointed. It lacked humour and the ending was rushed. The Melody character didn't work. Bill Murray looked disinterested. Kenan's direction was poor.
