So incredible that other cultures can appreciate our art better than we do. Don Quijote is one of our masterpieces, but we have a lot more. Spaniards, we should appreciate that and give our culture the credit that it deserves. This is amazing.
You're right - a timeless masterpiece. One of the greatest pieces of literature ever written. Cervantes had quite an imagination. I've read the book numerous times!
When I was in high school in the 1970's The Spanish teacher took our class to see this play on Broadway. We also acted it out in class as a way to learn the language.I was unable to attend and always regretted it after hearing the other students talk about how great it was.Well in 2003 when I herd that Brian Stokes was staring in the show along with Mary Elizabeth I quickly got tickets for my wife and I.I will never forget this performance.I waited after the show and got autographs and I purchased the CD at the show and often played it to my young son growing up.He too was quite taken by it.It is my life theme song.Always follow your dreams and no matter how hard life is if you really try you will persevere. And even if you fail you will know that you gave it your best.A true inspiration.
I have been a huge fan of Man of La Mancha since the 1970s and Am am glad I found this. I did not think the Richard Kiley version could be topped - but this may have done it. One of the best, most human songs ever written - very well done. As a wedding gift, just last week, I gave my nephew and his wife a Don Quixote statue that my father gave me. She is an actress and Aldonza is a dream role for her, and my nephew is a chef. They have never been to NYC but are moving there in the "quest" for her to make it on Broadway, and him to open a restaurant in one of the restaurant capitols of the world. They are dreaming what are usually impossible dreams - and since they understand the Don, I hope the statue will inspire them to "try, when your arms are too weary".
I was lucky to get to see Stokes in this show. My friend & I hiked to the stage door, but his wife told us that he couldn't speak as he had to save his voice.
I saw him in SLC too. You are so correct. He has one of the most beautiful and remarkable voices in the business. He and Audra McDonald are perfection. If you listen to Wheels of a Dream with both of them, it'll blow your mind.
Brian never seems to be at the very edge of his potential which seems absolutely boundless. No one does this better - bravissimo Brian. I once heard someone say about another singer, “I wish I could hear this song for the very first time again.” Same here
I have loved this song ever since I memorized the lyrics as a teenager when Man of La Mancha first appeared on Broadway. But, I have never heard a rendition that touched me to my very core the way this did. Brilliantly perfect in every way.
I lost a great deal of my memory last year. But listening to Brian singing The Impossible Dream brought one special day back to my mind. Had the privilege of seeing Brian on Broadway years ago, with my husband and two girls. I remember looking down the aisle during the death scene, with tears in my eyes, because I was so touched. To find that all of them had tears as well. Why do I love this song, this story so much? Because the story reminds me no matter how others may view us, or how we may view myself, there is a creator who sees us for the person He made us. His children, heirs, standing in righteousness, perfect and complete in Him. And because we are all called to be knights, called to Armor up, fight for the right, and march for a heavenly cause. We are called to follow a star. Our star is named Jesus, and unlike Don Quixote, who dies at the end of the play, our Star rose on the third day. And He has won the fight against the unbeatable foe. And because He has, we can reach the unreachable star. Thank you Mr. Mitchell, for sharing your gift. God Bless you and yours!
Our pastor loves this musical, as do I, which he calls a Christian musical and he is so right as are you. He mentioned Man of La Mancha at our community sunrise service this morning. I then came home and searched on youtube for this song just to hear it once again. I really think it was a God thing that I found this and your comment which touched me with its truth and eloquence. I shared it with my pastor. Your summation is perfect! Thank you so much! I hope you are doing well.

That's the sad thing about it. I was in the ensemble of this show in my sophomore year of high school with my then best friend playing Quixote. That year was the worst year of my life. It was traumatic and harrowing in all ways. I was literally dying. Physically as well as being suicidal. I’ve been doing theater for 10 years now and it’s always been my outlet. My comfort. He was graduating that year and on closing night as he sang the reprise of this with everyone onstage as Cervantes left the prison, I sobbed. Still hit that like high ass note in the chorus but with tears. This song means so much to me. Although we’re not as close anymore after some stuff happened this song is still comfort. It reminded me to keep going. To not give up. Even if it’s a hopeless fight don’t give up.

There have been dozens of renditions done of this song over the years. Sinatra, Elvis, and other various Broadway stars absolutely do not hold a candle to this man as far as this song is concerned. Anyone can fight me on that too!
This production was absolutely outstanding. This number has helped me get through what has been an arduous year, and BSM's vocal prowess only adds to that. Him and Richard Kiley have the best interpretations of this timeless and powerful classic.
I have being singing this song for 10 years, trying to master it. Happy with my results, but after hearing his voice I realized that I will never reach his perfection, it's like an unreachable star. Some people are born with gifts like that
Much longer for me and I am with you. I think I can hit the notes almost as well, but my voice lacks that same power and timbre that his has. I have had better luck with Dulcinea - where I think I could give even this guy a run for his money.
@@MagicalHATz Well said! But never assume that everyone should reach for the same star, The one disagreement between me and Don Quixote. He decided he was a knight errant because the world did not conform to his views of virtue. But we also must recall that there are "dark stars" out there, and many reach for them.
Im considered a good singer. I came here to learn this song. After seeing this impeccably performed version, he’ll no, that performance is the unreachable star. Left me breathless WOWZER
It's the perfect antidote for those who are downtrodden or disillusioned. To be a bit visionary and see good in the midst of trouble is a rare trait. It's also a lonely place to be, in that it takes safe harbor in art forms like dance, music, poetry, painting, or acting. Creative expression is the escape valve. I stand up and cheer inside when I hear this song!
Brian, you are a blessing to our earth! Your perfect rendition of this epic song makes me weep for joy every time I replay it. You inspire us all to keep on keeping on when life's burdens are a bit tough to bear. God bless you for all the hard work it took to develop your beautiful, heavenly voice and master your chosen art form. I love Jim Nabors' version as I grew up watching Gomer Pyle, yet your theatrical rendition is probably the most powerful release of articulated vocal power I've ever witnessed. My wife and I appreciate you so much! THANK YOU A THOUSAND TIMES!
When I was a child we played the original cast record over and over, our parents had seen it on Broadway...hearing this made me burst into tears, remembering my long gone parents, and those simple times if being so entertained by a record to a show we had never seen and how GREAT it is. Thank you Brian, for bringing it all back again.
I saw Brian Stokes Mitchell in Dallas. His performance was spectacular. I wished he had gotten the recognition his talent and good looks warranted. He would have made a great movie star.
When my ex-fiancee bought tickets for this show at the Beck Theater, I thought Stokes-Mitchell was too young and robust to play Cervantes' " knight of the mournful countenance." I was wrong. He was magnificent.
This singular, towering performance touches the unreachable star of perfection! And captures in its sparse poetic lines and masterful delivery the romantic essence of masculinity that impels "the duty, nay, the privilege of every true knight..." This should be mandatory viewing for every adolescent boy struggling to find his sense of purpose in the world.
We saw this show when it was in previews at the National Theater in Washington, DC.. He always had the option to go for a higher note at the very end of the song if his voice was feeling up to it. I was surprised he didn't at the Tonys but he did when we saw it, and he does on the cast album. Just spectacular.
I don't know why you say you were 'surprised' when Brian Stokes-Mitchell chose not to go with the higher note at the end of the song. You said yourself that 'he' had the option, so it was 'his' choice not yours. Criticizing his performance so many years after he sang it shows little class on your part. But then it figures.
Not sure how you interpret being surprised as being critical - you must have missed the last two words of my comment. Also not sure why you felt the need to add a personal attack.
2024 anybody?
This song makes me cry every time

There have been dozens of renditions done of this song over the years. Sinatra, Elvis, and other various Broadway stars absolutely do not hold a candle to this man as far as this song is concerned. Anyone can fight me on that too!
This man was Trevor in the Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Mr. Wu Wait, actuallly?
What? What? That is… I can’t even… Mind blown. He is… What?
No - one - can sing The Impossible Dream as Brain. I’ve listened to so many artists - Brian is the master! Fabulous!
Haha…. Brian may be a brain as well! 😉
This production was absolutely outstanding. This number has helped me get through what has been an arduous year, and BSM's vocal prowess only adds to that. Him and Richard Kiley have the best interpretations of this timeless and powerful classic.
Glorious!
A masterpiece in vocal performance! ❤️❤️❤️
He is the best Don Quixote ever! What a masterful rendition of The Impossible Dream!!
The acting, the lyrics, the voice….perfection.
How he really kill it like that
I have being singing this song for 10 years, trying to master it.
The thing about stars, there’s millions of them so we don’t have to fight for the same one. Reach for yours. You can do it.

Well said! But never assume that everyone should reach for the same star, The one disagreement between me and Don Quixote. He decided he was a knight errant because the world did not conform to his views of virtue. But we also must recall that there are "dark stars" out there, and many reach for them.
Pursue your dream, never stop striving for it. That is what this song says.
WOW, I HAVE NO WORDS, JUST A POUNDING HEART AND TWO TEARS DOWN MY FACE...
I saw him do this live on Broadway during this run . It was exhilarating then , and revisiting it was wonderful. It was even better live :) .
What a voice! And acting while singing. Mitchell is so talented!
My high school English teacher took us to see this and it forever remains my favorite play and one of my favorite. Shoutout to Ms. Spring!!!
If there is one role on my bucket list to play, it is Don Quixote de la Mancha. And the joy is it is a role I could still play even in my 60s!
amazing, outstanding, wonderful. brings me to tears everytime
This hits just right. Makes me sad, yet at the same time, it makes me feel hopeful and inspired.
I agree!! It matches the original and Frank Sinatra's version so very well in eloquence and heart.
VERY, VERY excellent, true emotions and strong singing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im considered a good singer. I came here to learn this song. After seeing this impeccably performed version, he’ll no, that performance is the unreachable star.
Left me breathless
WOWZER
I was there 18 years ago ... and remember until today, how amazing it was ... a performance for a lifetime ...
Nearly 400,000 views, but only 4 thousand likes. WTF? Brian Stokes Mitchel was brilliant!
Just frikin AWESOME!
So fantastic. So uplifting and calming. You know there's a tomorrow!
This song is my personal prescription medicine for discouragement and depression and numbness to the void
Best live performance I've ever seen when I saw him in this, still think about it
Brian Stokes Mitchell does the very best rendition of this beautiful song. Nobody else can sing it with so much emotion and earnestness.
He does this song the best too! Watch & listen to him here....amazing!

Brian stokes Mitchell. Me hace sentir que puedo alcanzer las estrellas
The only man that can sing this and mesmerize an audience. I have goosebumps!!!! Bravissimo!!!!
THANK YOU A THOUSAND TIMES!
this song literally makes me cry every time. the way he delivered this was absolutely incredible
When my ex-fiancee bought tickets for this show at the Beck Theater, I thought Stokes-Mitchell was too young and robust to play Cervantes' " knight of the mournful countenance."
I was wrong. He was magnificent.
Me too. Loved him in it
If America had another national anthem this would be it.
That ending was definitely worth the waits
This man’s voice is amazing.
How well he attends to the fact that Don Quixote was trapped in the body of an old man when he was moved to follow this dream.
Goosebumps!
How can an artist be so technical and so emotional in a performance? BSM can do it singing beautifully!
Magnificent voice and song
❤Simply OUTSTANDING!!❤
Brian's rendition of this song makes life worth living ❤
Instant inspiration. "To bear with unbearable sorrow"
With Gratitude to Brian, i stumbled here On Veterans Day 2022. Stunning rendition 💜!
Omg l just got tears in my eyes but power in my heart !
I can listen to this over and over again.
This shows the value of ambition and hope. And life is ever so much better when guided by reason and science.
Genius. What an amazing artist!
I ask for help and the universe send me this.
Watch & listen to him here....amazing!

BRAVO for BRIAN STOKES MITCHELL, is a TRUE LEGEND, is a TRUE DON QUIJOTE!!!!
One of the most amazing songs ever…
I remember Brian from Trapper John MD. I never knew he could blow like THIS! 😲
Sono qui per Jetro de Il Principe d'Egitto. Ho adorato la versione della sua canzone ...che voce! Che espressività.. 😍
Great singer.. Great song.. Beautiful lyrics..
My very favorite song and interpretation! 😉
Surprise: When something unexpected happens. Not criticism. I'd expand if I thought you were doing anything other than trying to pick a fight.
I absolutely love Brian Stokes Mitchell’s voice and his delivery.
