    Today we discuss how to cleanup leaves in the yard. It's important to understand that leaves carry trace minerals that are beneficial for trees, shrubs, gardens, and grass. You basically have all this free fertilizer lying around. It's best to mulch them and put them back to where they belong.
    Today we go over two leaf shredding / leaf mulching machines. The worx leaf mulcher and the sunjoe electric leaf shredder. Watch and see which of the two machines the ginja prefers to use most.

    I have the Worx and recommend using the Oregon 22-895 Magnum Gator line Square .095. It is a square line with a wire core. I find that the square shape helps give me a finer multch and the wire core helps with longevity. I have a lot of twigs and the OEM line would get chewed up very quickly. After cutting a length from the spool, the end will be deformed. It will be difficult to thread. Use pliers to round the end.

    Wow! That was a great video! Very informative and to the point. Great comparisons on both units. I myself own the Worx Tri-Vac. I love it! I do my whole yard with it and it mulches down pretty good where I only use one brown leaf bag vs. 3 or 4 just picking the leave up by hand after raking. Time consuming and tedious but what do I care, I'm retired and have nothing else to do. If I don't get it done by the first snow fall, I have no problem doing it in the spring. Then I know I won't have any leaves coming down from the trees at that time. But really a great video!

    Even though you did not like the grass in with the leaves from the mower, that stuff is compost gold. The mix of green and brown will make a wonderful compost for the garden. If you pile it up and make sure its has moisture, not soaking but wet, then leave it for a week, you will find it gets hot inside the pile. Thats the bacterial and such breaking down the organic matter into black gold.
    Yes the mower doesnt shred as well but the added green makes better mulch. And since you have the mulcher thing anyways you can still shred it down even smaller.

      The green grass/nitrogen combined with the brown dead leaves/carbon compliment each other. A pile of grass clippings will smell as it decomposes. A load of mulched brown leaves, worked into the soil will draw nitrogen to rot. Combined, there will be no smell and become a more balance valuable soil conditioner.

    The diameter and stiffness of the trimming line should probably be matched to the rpm of the motors and the rate of feed to optimize the best fit for each machine. Given a little time to experiment with different line gauges, you would be able to optimize each mulcher to their best. Also, don't forget the feed rate ... because the Worx was allowing you to feed faster, the material wasn't in the chamber near as long depriving it of the opportunity for 2nd, 3rd and 4th cut time ... that obviously affects the final mulch density. Really great video that was a lot of fun to watch ... that was a pretty good support team you had as well.
    Thanks for sharing your experience, it was both informative and interesting.

    Great review! I've considered this option but I'm going to stuck with mulching the leaves back in with my mower. Blow the leaves out of the beds onto the lawn (try not to pile them up). Raise the deck up a notch (maybe 2 in the front if you have a lot of leaves), keep that blade sharp and Mulch away.

    I just blew all of my leaves into a 15’x15’x4’ pile. Took my mower without the bag and mulched it down to almost a powder. Put the bag back on the lawn mower and used it like a vacuum and added it to my compost pile. I now have about 50-100lbs of compost that’s about 3’x3’x3’. I soak it and turn it over the winter a few times.
    My vegetable garden THRIVES with this as a soil mix/top coat.

    I had a Snapper mulching lawn mower with the Nija blades. I raked my leaves in a pile and kept running them over until they became a powder. This didn't take long as leaves were dry. Leaves like maple, are easy to mulch and return back to the soil. Oak leaves do not break down as quickly and take more to break down. They are also hard on the lawn. I am not big onto those machines you showed. The Lawn mower method can take on small branches and even pine needles and pine cones. You can forget using those machines on pine needles and pine cones. Forget sticks. I ran my Snapper mower for 30 years before it finally gave out. I only had to change the Nija blades once. I still miss my old Snapper mower.

    This is the first review that actually shows the inside of the mulcher. Looks like steel wire or even a blade could be fitted for better results with wet leaves that are clumping together. The Sun Joe looks like it has a metal hub, much better than the plastic hub in the Worx if you are using metal wire. I like the stand and the hopper on the worx better though.

    Ginja - I recently found your channel and it's helped me start our my lawn care journey, so thank you. I actually own that Worx mulcher and had good results when I used it last Spring to clean up a mess left by the old homeowner. But I've also read that mulching leaves with a mower right back into your lawn provides some cheap fertilizer as well. But does the same apply when the consistency is around 50% hardwood leaves and 50% pine needles? I feel like putting those back into the grass may make the soil too acidic. What are your thoughts?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  Před 4 lety +1

      Pine needles are very acidic. It will all depend on your native ph. If your ph is high you have nothing to worry about. If it's low you'll want to bag or apply a heavy lime treatment after.

    • @bobjackson4785
      @bobjackson4785 Před 4 lety +2

    • @NCGrassPlugs

    Thank you for sharing this video I have always used my riding lawnmower with the bagger,now I’ll use the worx after the bagger and it should reduce the amount of bags. I’ll keep ya posted.

      Just used mine.Thanks for sharing,the only downside is that if the leaves are a bit wet it clogs the holes and doesn’t grind well.other than that this thing worked fantastic!
