On the eighth day of Navratri, listen to Harshita recite the story of Ma Mahagauri.
Ma Mahagauri is worshipped on the eight day of Navaratri. Maha means great or extremely and Gauri is brilliant. She is worshipped by devotees to be loyal and for life long bonds. After killing all the demons in the form of Kaalaratri, Parvati had skin as dark as night. Shiva teased her with the nickname- Kali. Parvati got angry and decided to do penance praying to lord Brahma to regain her fair skin. Brahma came in front of Parvati and advised her to take bath in the Manasarovar river in the Himalayas. When Parvati entered the manasarovar river, her dark skin shed away which formed a female. This form then killed demons Shumba and Nishumba. Parvati regained her fair complexion and was called Mahagauri which also means extremely fair.
