It's not that I don't like Mariah but I honestly think Gabriel is better than Mariah. Mariah had vocal training by her mother who was an opera singer while Gabriel taught himself to sing. No vocal training at all and he doesn't even speak English. Thanks for your reaction and your continued support of Gabriel. ❤

The whistle is not better than Mariah. They both are good and different. Mariah’s whistle in that song is more airy, while in Gabriel’s is more belting. Both amazing!

Better than the original? Not really, The production is terrible, they needlessly made his voice sound almost robotic when he has a nice beautiful voice (most likely not his fault, I do not know if he is the producer and if he is what was he thinking stripping the song of one of the most important aesthetics, but Mariahs tone is incomparable and he knows it because he himself really likes her music but the almost untouched vocals of Mariahs production (she did produce this song and recorded it in 1997 for her album Butterfly but got bumped by Whenever you call) as we all know Mariah is very famous for her unique dynamics which he applied several times but his placements somewhat stole the stole the soul of the interpretation he was doing, he didnt let go like you feel Mariah does, he is worried of using the right technique so his passionate movements in the video do not match his vocals lost some cohesiveness but I dont blame him for being a bit scared. He didnt match the legatto of the first chorus (and hold on to this because later is important), he skipped the intentional vocal breaks Mariah's original has (extremely difficult because Mariah has nodules but he doesnt) and this aesthetics are very important because they provide a more tender and at the same time raw sentiment, they exist for a reason in the song. Whatever Mariah Carey adds to her songs serves a purposein the song regardless of what it is she treats everything like a phrase and that why it doesnt sound like oversinging because its match8ng the melody and filling the correct frequencies (yes real producers understand this very well and it importance when creating a song. Now lets bring back the legatto thing I mentioned before, in the last chorus he also missed the legatto and that plays an important part because this is what makes makes this section even a more complex because she has less space to breath and she is about to sing a 20 seconds dynamic sustained with only 4 notes only in chest voice, falsetto, adding vibratto, removing vibratto and the last run he did after the sustained messed up what he did so good, that part alone crossed him to the line of oversinging and stealing again the emotional interpretation Mariahs voice does, the original version's ending is meant to sound like she has no more breath even thou she could have an extra 30 seconds that is part of the interpretation the song is about begging somebody to let go so she is letting go her emotions through the vocal showcase. He is beautifully agile of course, no need for a rqeminder but he couldnt nail the 34 notes run before the last chorus, I tried to count them and I could here 17 give or take 1 or 2 notes to me it felt sloppy because this are prerecorded vocals and with his talent he couldve done a way better, perhaps not like Mariah (her agility is present throughout her entire range and has done live runs of over 55 notes back to back in whistle. "The One" Shinning through the rain special 2003) but he is more than capable to record A+ level without a drop of doubt. Last but not least in buth the second and 3rd chorus during the sustained note he lacked depth, dont get me wrong what he did is crazy difficult and it does not sound bad whatsoever he also did the terminak vibratto beautifully but listen to Careys belt, she gradually starts adding depth to the note and terminal vibratto kicks in a very specific part of it first without vowel modification and then with. I have never heard him achieve that in his videos maybe he has done it but I have not yet seen all of them . How do artists like Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey are capa le of achieving that? Easy, its impeccable vocal technique using al resources available, specifically speaking what they do is lift their soft palate creating an effect of depth.
All of the above are based on 3 important things that although people dont think of as singing techniques they are actually the most important which are:
1. Breath Control
2. Posture (Stilettos are something that affects your posture of course but a person like Mariah will never be caught dead without heels however her heels when going out are very different comlared to the ones she uses in her concerts, for her concerts she uses platforms and the heels are thick so its easier to comoensate becaue she has more support and the corrections she has to do are more manageable an heels en up being smaller than you think because of the platform.). Whistle was impressive but Mariah 's is texturized (and that plays a part in the song) also the vowels he chose were incorrect but hey, he is whistling so he deserves a standing O
3. Connection for the interpretation. In this case Mariah wrote the song so she knows why and where she wrote it which is a disadvantage for Gabriel, however think of some of Mariahs greatest covers like Without You, Against all odds, I still believe, Bringing on the Heartbreak, One last time or I wanna know what love is, you can feel the connection she has to the songs and its because when she does a cover she picks the song based on a memory of her life where the song was present, is an emotional link and of course since she produces her own music she is capable of even create and coonvey even more.
The complexity of this song sustained and whistles aside lies in the borderline of oversinging without crossing basically this is the most you can do before oversinging and he failed to replicate that in his cover.
Regardless of the things mentioned before Gabriel does deserve a standing ovation because although the original still sounds better you need to remeber that singing a Mariah carey song is not difficult, it is vocal suicide but he did an amazing job and he is stiĺl young I hope he continues refining detaiks like those because if he wants to continue doing covers of Carey he has to remeer tat every detail serves a purpose and she is attention to detail oriented and I hope he switches producers cause this ine made a great singer sound like the Jetsons maid needlessly as if he was a Jennifer Lopez needing that
