    I LOVE you're art and I LOVE the "unfinished" look. I feel so much more of an emotional pull toward sketchier, looser art. I feel like something gets lost when a piece is overly refined and finished, like it feels cold and restrictive. I'm so grateful that you share your art and your sketchbooks, because it's exactly the style that speaks to me and sparks my imagination, but is incredibly hard to find amongst other artists. Keep up the good work!

    My sketchbooks are just some used old notebooks I altered. They become battered and thick and messy over time just how I like it. It feels more real and you can sense the artist's passion for creativity. They are just filled with scribbles, doodles, receipts and tissue papers with drawings, some candy wrappers, sketches and paintings etc. The more the sketchbook looks nice and expensive, the more it feels like my creativity is being limited. I also had my fair share of people questioning me why I do the things I do. They think I'm weird, so what I did was, just keep doing it since there is no other way. Criticisms are good too, it can help you grow, but if it's only demeaning and insulting, you always have the right to feel how you feel about it and continue on with your art. I love your sketchbooks. It feels more real to me than the ones I see that are insanely pristine and organized. I could never even if I tried. 😅

    I just want you to know that I really appreciate this video. I really look up to your watercolor work and I have for about 3 years now, your paper choices, colors, looseness of your works is something I really admire. Hearing that you felt frustrated and were struggling to find yourself in your art is something I really relate to and I would’ve never expected those feelings behind these pieces that I’ve always thought were perfectly crafted

    • @autchiu
      @autchiu  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you dear. A lot of that frustration came from a ton of people stealing my artwork and passing it off as their own. That made me feel like that work was no longer me. In fact, looking back on that old watercolor stuff makes me genuinely sad - like missing an old friend who's passed. But, artists are at their best when they allow themselves to grow, evolve, and adapt! I hope talking about it makes others feel like it's okay to not stick with a style that no longer feels like you!

    I loved watching this! And as for what you said about realising you don't need to please everyone, that was so nice to hear. To me, and I'm sure many others, the very way you break "rules" and expectaions for what "good art" is supposed to be is something that is so very beautiful and inspiring about your art! Your family member might not have liked it, but those things they don't like is something that a lot of other people will find beautiful :)

  • @Lilowillow42
    @Lilowillow42 Před 2 lety +4

    you are a huge inspiration for me!! not only in your artwork, which always without fail leaves me in awe, but also the freedom and love that just pours from your sketches. It is so important to talk about the relation between pressure and art and the whole "content" culture. It saddens me deeply to know how much anxiety art is giving because you are amazing and an incredible person. Please never let anyone discourage you from doing what you want. I can deeply empathize with your struggles and there were so many times where I felt trapped by the blank page and the need to make every single spread worth admiration. Art should never be about the next person, and it should always be a safe haven for exploration. Watching your journey really opened my eyes and gave me the courage to just try things out. Thank you so so much! and keep it, your a gift to the world

      ahh thank you for your kindness!! I really appreciate it! I think that a lot of artists dont talk about the ugly/stressful things that go on behind what we post and that just contributes to everyone feeling the need to be perfect. I hope I can share some of the sad/rough/frustrating things to help those feeling lost!! I hope you find inspiration and a sense of freedom in your own work! Just know youre totally not alone!

    This video is absolutely fantastic. I’m 62 and been an artist all my life and I wish there were more videos like this on CZcams. I’ve been searching and searching for honest work like this. Your sketchbooks are the most creative and exciting and real that I’ve seen. If you continue in this way you will be completely on track. Well done. Ps, don’t look for an art style. It’s such a big deal nowadays but totally wreaks havoc on people’s creativity and is completely overrated. If you create from your gut and what your heart is urging you to do you will create whatever you need to express yourself and to reach others with your art ❤

    Loved watching this video and seeing your lovely art! I couldn't help but notice you have some really lovely vibrant pink and yellow neon pigments in a lot of your sketch pages and I was wondering if you have any advice for someone trying to find really bright colors like neon pink and highlighter yellow in colored pencils/paints/sketchbook friendly supplies ? Which brands do you recommend?

    • @autchiu
      @autchiu  Před rokem +1

      Thank you dear!! The neon colors are not lightfast, keep that in mind! So it’s okay to use them in a sketchbook where they will be away from direct sunlight most of the time, but if you use them on final artwork the colors will fade. I use just normal highlighters. Mine are by sharpie but literally any would work! I also use Shinhan Pass paint. The color called pink is SO neon! Then I also use Holbein’s fluorescent line of artist colored pencils. There’s some other brands that have them too like Prismacolor!
      Hope that helps!!
