Planting a Pear Tree Guild | Growing Food Naturally and Sustainably

- A guild is a community of plants that support each other by building and improving soil through nutrient recycling, providing shade, conserving water, preventing erosion, attracting beneficial insects and repelling pests and diseases. In a food forest, guilds provide food and medicine for us and a diverse ecosystem for wildlife.
In this guild, I plant a bosc pear as the primary tree, yarrow for fixing nitrogen in the soil, lavender for feeding beneficial insects and repelling pests, St. John's Wort for shade and insects, blackberries for food and comfrey for mulch and for mining minerals from deep underground.
Since it's "ours", I sure hope we get to hear sage advice from Mrs. James. I love your channels!

Thanks Shawn. I'm not home steading, On a tiny lot in Perdido FL. close to my favorite fishing. Paid cash for new house, no mortgage or car loan. Growing bird seed and flowers for the birds, bees and butterflies. Looking at fruit trees to plant. Peaches and Figs. Got to wait till the dormmate season to purchase and plant. Thanks for all the info.
Wonderful to sit in the garden and have you explain to us what you are doing and why! I think my father would have enjoyed your company very much. Our lot was part of an old farm, mostly sand. He did his research like you, and we were happy with most of his results. He thought he would go for the DNR but decided that it wouldn't support his growing family. At 3:35 that's a stellar jay whistle. Black and blue jay looking bird. I see them all the time where I live in NV. It's also pleasant hearing the woodpeckers too.

Wonderful gardens; thanks for sharing! I’ve been creating a forest garden in my front yard but do have a lot of deer pressure. Even plants that are deer resistant seem to get nibbled off. Who would guess they like potato & tomato plants!. Trying steel posts with fish line strung between & it slows them down. I’ve found they don’t like squash plants. 🤗🇨🇦

I just enjoyed the garlic harvest video. I planted a few dozen garlic from the supermarket last fall. Only about a third grew. They bolted early but I did get some not too bad ones. I hung them in my hot dry workshop for lack of a cooler place. in a couple weeks I tried some and although smallish, tasted awesome.
I wondered what “the guild” was in the title (as I only knew it as a group of like minded people), but now I know. Always so much educational material in your videos, love watching all your channels and never miss a video (even when I’m too busy to comment).. wish I could give more than one 👍🏻
I finally have most of the plants I need to plant my first guild. I'll wait til the weather is appropriate though. I love what you are doing there...me, still looking for that magical spot...you know, the one I can afford! :D

I’m afraid my Sunday will be shot for 1 1/2 hrs… I am not complaining! That soil looks amazing! We have alot of clay here in my area. ( I have stopped and started several times …) I now under that you are making the soil better. Thank you for this educational video on plants! ps- just so you know, I can still hear you just fine with Calli panting. 😉 She is a lucky girl to have y’all and ya’ll are lucky to have her. Just watched your last video and it was great so figured better watch this one. We live in Northeastern Washington State and seems like we pretty much have the same climate and growing season. We planted our orchard this year..1 honey Crisp apple, 1 Braeburn apple since it cross pollinates with the Honey Crisp and vice versa, 1 Bartlett Pear, 1 Frost peach which was developed by WSU for a cold climate peach, 1 Lapin cherry, and 4 Black Walnut trees. It will be awesome to see your channel grow.

Shawn I winced when you dug up that St. John's Wort. You didn't cut it back. That's a cardinal rule. To compensate for the damage to the root system, you have to balance out the above ground foliage to match the reduced roots. I'd have also cut back the yarrow.

So remind me why he thought he must have another channel
He replied to some comments on his “$12,000 for Meat!” video explaining that CZcams punished the entire channel for any low performing videos and that CZcams was not showing his videos to many of his subscribers. So by making a new channel he can put all of the gardening/homesteading/livestock videos here for those who enjoy that content and it won’t negatively affect his other two channels because of YT’s weird backward policies. I don’t know much about how YT operates behind the scenes so this was eye opening to me and made me realize why Shawn was considering making a new channel.
@@Esoj. The algorithm seems to favor shorts too. Our entire society is being programmed to have ADHD. I'm looking forward to this channel. I marvel at Shawn's soil building skills...growing all those plants in that Canadian shield forest takes some intense planning and management.
