- In loving memory of Sulamai Aukuso Lavea (1973-2021).
These interviews of prominent members of the Otara Scorpions community were filmed at a memorial gathering in rememberance of Sulamai "Sorbs" Lavea.
In October 2021, we invited key people to help us create a list of names for the portraiture
painting of the Scorpions For Life mural project. These key co-ordinators and ex-Scorpion players were responsible for conferring with the wider Scorpions whānau to bring a list of names together in an online hui (due to COVID) attended by the Ōtara Scorpion Executive team and the artist team.
Reps were given the Kaupapa of the murals in changing rooms:
▪ To remember/honor late/living Ōtara Scorpions who were/are the faces of Mana in iconic
moments of Scorpions history and/or uplifting Ōtara and Ōtara Scorpions through their
influence and leadership
▪ Their faces on the murals contribute to a ‘sacred’ space for our players and coaches
▪ Their visual presence adds to uplifting and inspiring players within a space of Mana
▪ The murals help players prepare mentally, spiritually, and physically before a game
The Ōtara Scorpions Rugby League and Sports Club is a volunteer-based sports club. The Rugby League Club are in their 51st year as a much-loved community hub with a long-term
intergenerational membership. As part of that milestone, and the celebration of moving into a brand new multisports complex we are launching some murals.
This mural project acknowledges all previous players and administrators that have supported the community throughout the Club's 51-year history. The building itself pays homage to Mana Whenua, Tara Te Irirangi and will include murals that also pay homage to the legacy of Pacific peoples in Ōtara as well.
With support from Creative New Zealand we have contracted talented locals who have been
collaborating with Ōtara Scorpions to honor the local people and history in the 51st Year of the
club’s existence in Ōtara.
Great to you hear from my Otara role models from my childhood honoring Otara icon Sorbatori Lavea. Much love and respect to - Tusa Lafaele, Darryl Afeaki, Max Tuala, Toma Suamasi, Reuben 'Muss' Wiki, Alby Nukunuku, Sepeiti Paea, Saulo Suamasi, Metaia Ualesi, Andy Pereira, and great to see John Toleafoa,. This group of men truly helped me my age group - band of brothers harden the hell up and grow up fast. Guys like Renzo Ualesi, Mose Toleafoa, Uiese Tatupu, Dameon Ihaka aka Fenton, Paulo Winterstein... can't list them all but thank you for the learnings, the lessons and the guidance. God bless Otara, and go the Queenslanders!!!
