- In this weeks episode we ,Josh and Colten, taste and compare two classics Jack Daniel's Old Number 7 and Jim Beam white label. What words could someone write about these two that have not been already written? Jack Daniel's Old Number 7 and Jim Beam white label are the two most known whiskey and bourbon in America, probably even in the world, seem every one has drunk both of these and most have a strong opinion about which one is better. Even though this particular bottle of Jack Daniel's Old Number 7 that we tested had a strange taste we did enjoy drinking both . We hope you enjoy watching the show just as much as we enjoyed filming.

I remember distinctly when I finally spent the extra money to get a bottle of Jack insted of my usual Jim Beam. I expected it to be so much better then Jim. That's when I realised Jim had always been the superior whiskey.

Lol we could literally be the same person because I had the same experience, and we have the same name.
I grew up drinking Jim Beam out of my dad's cabinet and then when I tried Jack I was just like, I think I like Jim Beam more anyway. It's really like comparing apples to oranges though because despite Jim being a bourbon it has alot of spicy rye notes, which is weird for bourbon, and Jack is a whiskey with alot of sweet bourbon flavor. It's like saying do you like sandwiches or do you like pie more, you like them for different reasons.
Jack Daniels is expensive because of Frank Sinatra.
Can't say I agree, Jack is a few solid notches above Jim for me. Which is not to say that Jim is BAD, that's not what I'm saying. I just like Jack better. I actually found a 5th of Jack for $15.99 here in far northern California today at Bevmo. (about 100 miles south of Oregon border) I used to pay usually $18.99 to $20 for a 5th of Jack back in like 2013 - 2018 when I was still drinking alot of it.
I drink alot of truly bottom shelf stuff also, not only because I'm poor, but because I honestly just like alot of that stuff. What we consider low grade stuff today would be considered top notch quality back in the old west 1800's days, is one way I personally look at it. I can only imagine how bad their low grade adulterated whiskey/booze was back then. I know most people ain't gonna look at things that way, that's just my perspective.
@yearginclarke I agree. No matter how many whiskeys I drink I always go back to Jack. I’m betting the quality of whiskeys in the 1800 varied. My guess is it was just a notch or two above moonshine.

The very first time I ever drank any alcohol was in '87,18 years old in the army.We ( me and 3 others) shared a giant bottle of JD and chased it with mountain dew.Gross.Chugging away.I puked all over the barracks and my buddy had to clean up for me ! My very first bottle of bourbon was Jim Beam and I've been enjoying every sip of it,strong on the palate but smooth finish. They say that Jim Beam was the standard by which other bourbons are measured and with good reasons.
I completely agree, Jim Beam is beautiful. I love it room temperature, fuck the rocks, just going neat and man that's a good drink for the price.

I just turned 18 here in Russia, and bought some Jim beam yesterday. I find it funny that where Jim Beam is made ( USA) it’s not legal to drink their till 21, but here in Russia it’s 18 to drink. I really like Jim Beam a whole lot more, but it's really like comparing apples to oranges. They're not the same thing, because Jack Daniels tastes great too, probably better than Jim Beam, but I still like Jim Beam more, because it's kind of weirdly spicy rye more than most bourbons are. While Jack Daniels is alot more corny and sweet than most whiskey. They're outliers of their own kind and that's why comparing them is almost impossible.

I grew up loving jack and now that I’m older and on a budget I still drink jack lol he has a special place in my heart. All I taste are good memories and family and friends jack Daniels for the win!

I’ve been drinking Beam since high school. The best bottom shelf liquor you can get. Jack daniel’s is more expensive and you’re only paying for the name.

Jack Daniels does have a mild, not overwhelming, banana flavor as part of its overall flavors. My guess is that this flavor ester comes from the yeast strain that is used plus the high temperature that they ferment their whiskey wash at. I saw a distilling video from a micro distillery and the distiller said the temperature inside the fermenter increased by 17 degrees f during fermentation (yeast activity generates heat!). Many Belgium yeast strains are known to create various flavors, for example. To my taste, the Jim Beam (and similarly, Evan Williams 43% ABV Bourbon) taste similar to each other and I describe the taste as somewhat medicinal (that may be from the corn). If you want your Beam to taste a little like Jack, try adding a 1/4 tsp of McCormick imitation banana flavor and a quarter tsp of imitation vanilla to a 1.75 liter bottle. Both Jack and Jim Beam taste good and are good, less expensive choices. It would be interesting if they released a barrel strength version (about 110 to 112 proof) or only proofed down to 50% ABV instead of 40%. Though flavorful, they taste a little watered down as compared to 100 to 112 proof whiskey.
Jim Bean is way smoother and has less of a alcohol burn too. But I LOVE me a Jack on the rocks or a Jack and Coke.

I agree. I like them both, but I'll go for beam every time. It's cheaper that Jack where I live and It has everything I want in a bourbon. Is it my favorite? No, but it's pretty good and it's everywhere.

My dad and I bought Jim Beam and Jack Daniel's for New Year's (happy new year lol). He said that it's been 20 years since his last taste of Jim Beam whiskey, and his first time trying Jack Daniel's. I've had JD plenty of times with my friends and never tried Jim Beam. So it was a new experience for both of us.
I have to admit, from my very limited experience with alcohol variety, they are very similar to me. I find that Jim Beam does have a stronger scent to my nose, and Jack Daniel's is somehow sweeter. Yet both are great to mix, in my opinion. Just wanted to share my thoughts after finding and watching this vid. Thanks have a good one.

Alright guys, I did my own test today. I contacted you earlier about trying the Ezra Brooks Sour Mash Bourbon. I tasted Brooks along side Jim Beam. The Jim Beam was very smooth, and less hot as it only has 40 percent alcohol. The Ezra Brooks is 45 percent alcohol, and slightly hotter than the Jim Beam. The Blue Ribbon is awarded to...........EZRA BROOKS. EB has more Umph. I like Umph. The JB is a good stable for any bar. I do like it, and will NOT let it go to waste. A good deal going on right now at Walgreens. 2 for 36 dollars, until 5/31/2019. Have a great weekend guys. Drink responsible.

Erm hate to burst your bubble but Jim beam is very rare in uk bars. It’s everywhere in the shops but it’s very rare you find a bar stocking any kind of bourbon

I drank Jim Beam in college mainly because it was cheaper than Jack Daniels in the '80s. Just two weeks ago, I purchased my first bottle of Jack Daniel's and it was ok, but didn't have that "wood" taste of Jim Beam. So I kinda think the Jack Daniel's maybe slightly overrated?

When it comes down to a shoot out between beem and JD. I like beam a lot more. Another good bourbon to try for about $14 is Evan williams. Bourbon. It's a nice tasting bourbon. Great mixer awesome sipper too.

Totally get the "bananas" association. I took fruit salad to work one summer day - I'm in a tropical clime - and the main component of the salad was bananas. No joke, when i got back the salad box smelled similar to JD 😂

I prefer Jim Beam, and I taste cinnamon when I drink it. Jim Beam is widely available in Kazakhstan where I live. Some stores carry several different American Bourbons. Wild Turkey is my number 2 bourbon.

I been drinking beer for 38 years.... I just upgraded to gentleman jack on the rocks and it's opened a new world for me... I'm very keen to try Jim Beam now after watching this...... on the rocks though cos I got me learner licence... and I'm a little freaked out how great the whiskey tastes... it's amazing.
Gentlemen Jack is excellent whiskey for the price. If you are new to whiskey keep within the $30-&40 range. Stay away from single barrels and casks until later. The general rule of thumb is your paying more for more flavor but if you are not able to taste those flavors yet then you are just wasting your money. The name brads have been around for a while for a good reason. I would recommend Jack, Jim, Knob Creek,Buffalo Trace, Makers Mark, Wild Turkey, George Dickel, Chattanooga Whiskey and J.W. Kelly. Most Whiskeys on the shelf are sourced, that means 70% of what you see at the store is made by one company so don’t get too caught up in what the label says. Good luck keep watching our show. I'd take Jim Beam over Jack Daniel's, but I'd take Evan Williams over both. It's cheaper in price, but if it was the same price as Jack Daniel's I'd still take E. Williams. Better flavor profile and not as harsh.

Jack is pretty low on my priority list, given the better whiskeys out there you can get for as much or a little more... but so help me, Jack and Coke is a different beast. Nothing quite makes a highball like Jack does. As for Jim Beam, their bourbon does the trick, though I'm enjoying a nice glass of their rye whiskey right now and enjoying it.

I'll enter a comment here for what its worth and for a little trivia as well. Jack Daniels is a Tennessee sour mash whisky. The only other Tennessee sour mash(whisky) is George Dickel. The rest are from Kentucky. Did anyone know that?
Good point. Are you saying the only whiskey made in TN is Jack and George or Jack and George are the only sour mash? I don’t remember if any other whiskeys made in TN other than Jack and George advertise to be sour mash. I think Uncle Nearest is sour mash but they , for now, are not making their own.

Wild Turkey 101 is my go to sipper. I know many whiskies are better than Jack but there’s just something about it that brings me back to it. I love the charcoaled banana taste. It’s un American to not drink it.

You can’t compare Bourbon to Whiskey though. It’s like comparing apples to oranges.

I understand what you mean. The only step in the Jack Daniel’s process that excludes it from a bourbon classification is the placement of the charcoal filtering. A bourbon has to go directly from the stil to a new American white oak barrel, so on and so forth.

Negative my Friend. After Jack Daniel’s liquor is taken out of the still it is put through charcoal filtering. After this step they place the liquor in to the barrels and it comes out whiskey. For Jack Daniel’s to be bourbon nothing can be done to the liquor between the still and barrel. I love Tennessee whiskey and Jack Daniel’s.

Jim Beam, sipped straight at room temperature. If you chug it you miss all the taste that bourbon is known for.
