    Silverblatt: "I’m often a crier and many things make me cry. I come from a crying family-my mother cries, my grandma used to cry. It was never shameful to cry. My father never told me men don’t cry. He wasn’t much of a crier, but on occasion he could get a good cry in. A beautiful word in the middle of a sentence can sometimes reduce me to tears in an interview, and when I’m reading, too. I’ve sometimes wondered whether I’m at the point of tears all the time because I use my eyes so much that they’re strained and on the verge of tears anyway." Go!

    Congratulations, Chris, on the well-deserved acknowledgement. As a relative newcomer to Silverblatt’s body of work (discovered through Leaf x Leaf), I am profoundly grateful for the light you’ve cast on his and other critics’ contributions to literature. I can’t be alone in my astonishment, despite being an avid reader, of the sense of empowerment gained from illuminating those unknown and empty shelf spaces in my life. Many thanks to you and the community for that gift.

    I have listened to Michael and was in awe of him and his deep love of books and especially his knowledge, understanding, and love of the writers he interviewed. So many times he would be so emotional at the end of an interview he was nearly at the brink of tears and so was the the writer and so was I ! When this talk came on I was unbelievably happy to hear about this book. I also became fearful that something had happened to Michael and I began paying close attention to the tense of the verbs you were using when referring to Michael…I have missed his podcast so much and have been worried about him. The writers he interviewed just couldn’t believe the depth of Michael’s understanding and love of them and their work…so many, nearly all, signed off at the end of an interview expressing tremendous gratitude to Michael…one I remember especially was George Saunders ….thank you very much Chris for this beautiful tribute to Michael…you and Michael are indeed kindred spirits and I so relate to and share your deep affection and admiration for dear Michael Silverblatt! ❤️❤️❤️

    Great concept for a book! I'm currently reading through a series of delightful mini-essays on being a book/word nerd called "Ex Libris" by Anne Fadiman. If you haven't heard of it, I think it's right up your alley. The first one, which has been my favorite so far, is about how the author didn't feel "properly" married to her husband until they combined their book collection.

    My Michael Silverblatt story is a lesson for all. In either 2004 or 2003 a man at the Gay Starbucks in Weho (now closed) asked me what I was reading. I showed him, it was "Earthly Powers". He was so excited for me, and told me the ending would blow me away (it did, My God!). Quickly he and I became book and movie and close friends. He recommended that I listen to his friend Michael Silverblatt's, radio show, Bookworm. I did. Every episode was online. I devoured them. I would often ask my friend how Michael was. I often felt like I knew Michael, and would have conversations in my head with him about books, and about his interviews.
    I saw him introduce Edmund White at a reading downtown LA Maybe 15 years ago. It was a fantastic introduction and interview.
    Maybe five years ago I spotted Michael at Greenblatts (now closed) having lunch with, I THINK, with Sean (Shawn?) Sullivan, one of the show's two editors. I did what I always do when I see a celebrity I admire, I go tell them I think they are fantastic. I did, but I didn't stop there because his smile fed me. I told him, what I once told Dennis Cooper at a reading, Thank you, Thank you so much for talking about Sam D'Allesandro, whom I never would have learned about without you and DC.
    I thanked him for introducing listeners to the truly fabulous Sparks.
    I continued the Thank Yous. Thank you so much for giving John Ashberry space to read the translation of Pierre Martory’s Litanies, because I wouldn't have known it without you. I wrote it down, the whole poem, by hitting repeat over and over. Thank you for your first conversation with Franzen, which some called combative but really wasn't, he is perhaps too used to being praised solely, and you challenged him. I went on. Thank you for confronting, REALLY confronting Dale Peck. I hope, I truly hope Dale Peck grew a bit from that conversation, especially due to the moment when he initially disagrees with you....but then he says, "I do think that people are generally terrible" or something close to that. I hope that interview helped Dale, maybe it did.
    And Michael said, "I have to tell you, I was terrified to speak with Dale Peck." I reassured Michael that it was one of his best interviews. I thanked him from the BOTTOM of my heart for giving Dennis Cooper, and years later John Waters, space to praise Denton Welch. I asked Michael if he had Welch's hard to find, and very expensive, "Where Nothing Sleeps" because if he didn't, he could borrow mine at any time for as long as he liked.
    I thanked him for his conversation with Sontag's son where we learned such beautiful things about Sontag, I won't spoil them (Except this: WE ARE FRIENDS. We've wasted too much time already!), just listen to it.
    I thanked him for his devotion, from the very beginning, to both the very best of Gay and Lesbian literature, but also, bringing attention to some of the more contemporary gay writers, perhaps not as overwhelmingly perfect as James Purdy or James McCourt, but important, and in need of attention and sales.
    Oh that last interview with Mailer. Oh thank you Michael.
    I thanked him for calling the Potter books Dreck in one of his interviews, and that when one of the Facebook Bookworm followers asked why Michael might think the Potter books were Dreck, I responded to the post "Because they don't lead to anything. Take a look at your nieces, they started with Harry Potter, they continued on to Twilight, and then to The Hunger Games. That's like, backwards literacy."
    Really, I said all this and more, much more (Chris Ware, Vidal, Didion, David Mitchell such great conversations with these people). Some, not nearly all, of the conversations I'd had in my head throughout the years with Michael, spilled out of me. I said it all beaming at Michael while he was beaming back at me. And then I let him talk, and after thanking me sincerely, he said, simply, "Could I give you my Phone number? I don't give my phone number out very often, but I'd like to meet with you and talk more." Oh my god! He gave me his number, and we were going to have coffee or lunch some day and talk, and maybe do it again and again, and become friends.
    Then I let the stupid world get in the way. I would run into my friend and tell him, "please tell Michael that I am embarrassed I haven't called him, and I will, I promise." And then a year went by, and I ran into Michael at an Italian restaurant, a very good one, coming out of the bathroom. And I apologized and said I was dumb and I very very much wanted to get together and I WILL call you.
    I didn't. It wasn't because I was intimidated, the ice had been broken. I was letting that thing happen that keeps us from spending physical time with the best people, inertia maybe?
    Then Covid separated all of us. And now, I can't say more because this is a public forum, but trust the moral of this story: Pick up the phone and make plans.
    Thank you Chris for your Channel, and your admiration of this remarkable man.

    I lived in LA for years and listened to Bookworm on KCRW. LA doesn't have a reputation as being a "bookish" city, or as having an intellectual culture, but Michael Silverblatt carried the torch. I regularly listened to his interviews with authors and artists--always a patient, deliberate unfolding of wise truths. His mere presence on the airwaves was transgressive and highlighted what truly matters--the pith and pull of literary art--even amidst social chaos in the LA basin and world at large. Silverblatt always modelled intellectual curiosity. I'm saddened that Bookworm has been discontinued on air, but at least we have archives and this new book of conversations. For instance, I'll never forget listening to Didion's interview (I was on the edge of my seat) and the interview with DFW (I had never heard of a Sierpinski gasket). Thank you for this discussion and your work on the Bookworm book. And thank you for this splendid channel, which assuredly carries the torch of Silverblatt's Bookworm... the torch will be passed on from one hand to another, mind and heart...

    Fantastic. Bought it solely for the Sontag interview, but the entire collection seems wonderful. Benjamin Moser’s biography Sontag talks about Silverblatt which led me to your channel searching his name on CZcams. Needing to learn more about Silverblatt & you introduced him in such engrossing way. Which in turn led to a fun reading/viewing circle from Sontag to Silverblatt to you, now, today, from you, to Silverblatt back to Sontag. Cheers

    Absolutely cannot wait to pick this up. After discovering Bookworm last year (thanks to you!), I've been obsessively going through the back catalogue. It's sad to think that the show may not be returning, but I suppose 30+ years is a pretty good run.
    I can definitely understand the decision to only include deceased authors, but it would have been fun to see some of Michael's conversations with William T. Vollmann included, which are among my favourites. They have such a great dynamic. Particularly the episodes for "Last Stories and Other Stories", which are a delight:
    "Now, Bill!"
    "Yes, Michael."
    _"Urticating hairs?"_

    • @LeafbyLeaf
      @LeafbyLeaf  Před rokem +1

      As you may know, WTV is my favorite living American writer. I would pay exorbitant funds to get those conversations! Although, WTV emits this amusingly creepy and hilarious laugh in their conversation on _The Ice-Shirt_ that would lose its fidelity in textual form. The laugh comes right after WTV says: "Sometimes I feel bad about it."
      I feel so honored and proud to have introduced you to _Bookworm_ , which is to say Michael Silverblatt. He has, does, and will continue to enrich so many lives.

    Have been Silverblatt devotee for the better part of a decade. The many authors and books - alongside Michael’s indispensable wisdom - have acted as a necessary refuge from the often stringencies of academia, and buoyed this diletante when waters were rough.
    Always thought Mr. Silverblatt should publish a tome such as this, or books in the mode of the criticism of Harold Bloom…I’m glad to see this come to pass!
    Hope I’m not too late to enter the drawing. Thanks Chris for your trademark passion and erudition!

    • @LeafbyLeaf
      @LeafbyLeaf  Před rokem +1

      Hmmmmm, good question. I'd say the hardest part of was trying to really think about how each line would be received by someone who possibly hadn't heard the show. I had to question: does this spoken-word-in-textual-form still work? Going from two people speaking in real-time to the distillation in print is a huge paradigm shift. But I think it came out really well.
