  • Installation of the Rusty's Tire Carrier for the Jeep Wrangler TJ and LJ. Not a perfect product in its current form but definitely strong and will serve its purpose.

I really like Rusty's products. This turned out nice. Sucks about the missaligned tailgate.

If I was going to run a body mounted carrier it would be the Rusty's. Great choice.
    * the offset on the OEM carrier is to allow easy access to the tailgate handle

It looks wonky and now that I've seen it I can't unsee it haha. In the end I traded my slightly offset tire for a slightly crooked tailgate but oh well, at least it's strong now.

Dude, that carrier looks amazing, what a beast! That tie-in to the roll bar is brilliant. I had not seen that one, been looking for something like that verses the ones that pivot off the bumper. I found the Hyline Off-road combo that has an attachment to the tailgate with a turnbuckle so it has two points of attachment and I like the bumper that is needed anyway. Bummer about the offset on the right side, wonder if the holes through the tub could be made lower and still engage the bracket properly? That would bug my OCD. The lanyard is a miss as well, I’d rig up a strap that gives a bit somehow. I didn’t see one for YJ on their site anyway, wonder if the TJ/LJ one would work. Lookin good.

I thought about trying to go back and oblong the holes in the tub to lower the right side of the tailgate but you are kinda limited on how low you can go by the hump inside the tub and the top of the tail light. I think Rusty's just needs to address it on their end but that probably won't happen. It is super solid though, not sure if it would work on a YJ.

I wish they made these for the YJ.

Do you know what size those original bolts that’s on the tailgate that you had to reuse I don’t have on there and getting ready to install rusty tire carrier
Was hoping Rusty’s provide bolts for the Tailgate

Have you thought about maybe changing the hinge bolts to a smaller diameter bolt? That might would give you a little wiggle room to make things line up better.

I would have to cut the weld nuts off the inside bracket or use a very thin bolt to get through them, not sure I want to go that far. I think if the holes in the outside bracket were offset slightly that would solve it. You're limited to how low you can go though because of the tail light and the hump inside the Jeep.
