Gateway Gardens served as a US military housing area until the end of 2005. About 2500 inhabitants lived in the secluded housing area: soldiers and their dependents. The area had its own infrastructure with church, cinema, hairdresser, library, as well as kindergartens and schools. There was a direct road connection to the then Rhein-Main Air Base in the southern part of the airport with further facilities. In 1999, the decision was made to finally close the site. The handover of the site followed in 2005. After the withdrawal of the American forces, buildings were first demolished, then in 2006/2007 the entire area was redeveloped and cut to size with a new street grid. In the first development phase, the western plots of land closer to the airport are being marketed, with the eastern plots to follow later.
On June 6, 2008, the official inauguration of Gateway Gardens as Frankfurt's new urban district took place in the presence of then Frankfurt Mayor Petra Roth and then Fraport Chairman Wilhelm Bender.
Since January 1, 2019, Gateway Gardens has formed the new City District 327 within the Frankfurt Airport district. It was created by spinning off from the city district 329 Airport.
