I know that this is mostly to make Klaus easier to act and write for, but it reminds me of how Arnold Schwarzinegger lived in America for so long that he had to take speech therapy classes since his accent is so integral to his identity.

Not all Germans were Nazis the Waffen SS loved to push propaganda that the US and Russia wanted to take Europe for themselves, that is was some huge conspiracy the average German Soldier on D day wasn't even german, they were conscripts and Russian defectors. The bulk of "actual Germans" were men too crippled to keep fighting on the eastern front, the regular army troops had no idea about the concentration camps and ethnic cleansing, those were run by SS troops and Hitler youth corps. Read the book D Day Through the Eyes of German Soldiers, its a good read and shows you a lot of the thoughts german soldiers had at the time.
