Die zweitgrößte Kupfermine Europas: der in staatlicher Hand liegende Tagebau schöpft aus dem größten Kupfervorkommen Rumäniens - 65 Prozent der gesamten Reserven des Landes lagern hier. Die Mine ist enorm wichtig für die Wirtschaft Rumäniens, der Zeitgeist ruft nach Kupfer: für Solarzellen, Windturbinen und elektrische Autos.
An sich wäre daran ja nichts auszusetzen, doch mit dem Abbau des wertvollen Erzes kommt es nicht nur zu einem der größten Umweltskandale weltweit, sondern vor allem auch zu menschlichen Tragödien. 1978 befiehlt der damalige Präsident Ceausescu, den anfallenden chemischen Müll der Mine im benachbarten Dorf Geamana zu entsorgen, quasi über Nacht ertrinkt der Ort in der Region Siebenbürgern im Gift. 1000 Menschen verlieren von heute auf morgen ihre Heimat, ungefähr 400 Familien müssen umgesiedelt werden - ob sie wollen oder nicht.

The mine is enormously important for Romania's economy; the zeitgeist calls for copper: for solar cells, wind turbines and electric cars.
In itself there would be nothing wrong with that, but the mining of the valuable ore not only leads to one of the biggest environmental scandals in the world, but above all to human tragedies. In 1978, then-President Ceausescu ordered the mine's chemical waste to be disposed of in the neighboring village of Geamana, and the town in the Transylvanian region drowned in poison almost overnight. 1000 people lose their homes overnight, around 400 families have to be relocated - whether they want to or not.
