Very weird.. unaccompanied dogs are a rare sight. This reminds me of a dog my wife and I saw on Christmas Eve 1973. This was on the Sutton Coldfield by-pass road (the new A38) miles from any houses. We were driving north 8:47 to Derby. Suddenky a huge white dog appeared through the fog. It was walking south along the grass verge. We still mention this dog from time to time. The sight is unforgettable.
Remember back in the late 70s I was a stockman on a farm in Fife, Scotland. It was a winters morning, and there was a fresh 6 inches of snow had fallen in the early hours, so the fields were pristine and beautiful. We had fed some cattle that were outside, and were coming back to the farm via a different route, than the one we had taken when we went out. The other guy was driving the tractor, and I was in the trailer. We came to a gate, so I jumped off to open it, and I saw these big dog footprints in the snow, and I wondered it was very odd for a dog to be out on its own on a early weekend morning. We went through the gate, I closed it and jumped back in the trailer, and we were travelling along the bottom of a field that sloped sharply upward. I looked up the hill, and I saw it, a big, dark grey, almost black dog, I instantly thought wolf, as I know what most large dog breeds look like, and it didnt fit any breed I know. It was running back the opposite way we were going, jumped the wall around 50 yards up from the gate we'd just come through in one bound into the other field, and headed straight for a pine wood, about 100 yards further on and disappeared into the trees. Ive never forgotten that morning. and to this day Im still convinced it was a wolf. We travelled that same route on a daily basis, and never again saw sight or sound of it. Was a really wierd encounter.
Yeah, Ive often thought about that day, It was one of those lovely winter days, 6 inches of snow, and no other footprints around, sky was blue, and the sun was out,but very cold. But it was the size of the footprints that really caught my eye, they were so big, I thought they had to be a Great Dane, or a St Bernard size of a dog. Also I thought it was weird that he made straight for the trees, I wouldnt think a stray dog would do that, he obviously knew exactly where he was heading. @@frogmaster83
Nice relaxing video. I have to agree with you, I enjoy my solitude also. I always feel at home in the forest. Watch out for those dogs…lol Have a great week!
Thanks Dennis, this was an odd video for me. Not my style at all. I don't even know why I started filming, just felt I needed to get a few things off my chest if you know what I mean.
Myst admit, I'm definitely a forest hermit rather than the mountains, looks a cool woodland, sod the dog though lol ,good health and safe travels, cheers craig
Sounds like the barguest or hellhound, up here in Lincolnshire it's called hairy Jack, not something that you want to Google image search for I discovered one time.
Hey Jim Bob, I share the same feelings as you for the forest, can't beat it. Unfortunately for me I'm in the VERY dismissal Cambridgeshire Fens, nothing here but flat farm fields, when I want to walk in a beautiful forest I head for the lovely Norfolk, beautiful place.
In my area of Scotland 7 farms have closed bulldozers have been knocking down the trees and filling in the ponds whare frogs and deer and other wildlife lived it was once a lovely area Alec from Scotland
Im from london, been living in the north east of scotland. Give me the mountains any day, no chance of anyone or dogs creeping up on you. Them sunsets over on the west coast are to die for.
I had a strange encounter, lastnight at about 3am with my dog and I almost shit myself. Me and dog walking through a nice patch of grass , on side of road. I’m looking down to make sure I don’t step in dog poo. I thought I heard someone say something. I look up, bloke comes onto grass walks towards me, says nice dog and walks past me. I carry on and exit grass patch, few meters up road and this guys coming up behind me and I’m thinking oh shit, this is my CRAZY encounter of my life where I get stabbed many times , die and be on news. I was really shaking and not sure what to do but I knew I didn’t want to keep walking with him behind me. I stopped at a tree and pretended I stopped for dog to piss. As he’s getting closer, I’m shaking more. He passes us and I make sure to stay behind him. Then he turns right. Basically, he just walked in a circle for no reason. Was he getting ready to stab me and decided not to because of my nice dog? Instead of coming on grass towards me, all he had to do was stay on pavement. It was just so freaky.
The dog just wandered off too far from it's owner and got a bit disorientated, then when they look up and back to the owner for confirmation and they don't see the owner, they simply panic and run back as fast as they can in the direction they think the owner is, it happens all the time with mutts. Unusually your encounter was a big mutt and scarey for you, it had no interest in you though, just in finding the pack leader, ie the owner. Good vid tho.
No idea about the dog, but I am with you on how you feel being in woodland. Considering how much of our country used to be covered in forest, I think it could be a genetic memory linking us to our past. I don't feel at peace anywhere like I do when I'm surrounded by trees.
Always carry a stick/staff/cudgel when walking in the countryside or in the likely hood of encountering dog walkers and dogs. Trust me now a large dog can do a hell of a lot of damage in literally seconds, and a large determined dog can do much much worse.
I agree, dogs can be very dangerous. I have worked with many large breeds and sadly many people don't have a clue how to train them. I lost my old walking staff, I think its time to make a new one.
Always carry a stick when walking, never know when you need to poke something 😂. Mind you if it was a hound from hell a bottle of holy water might be needed. 🤣
With the buzzards and then hells hound …just waiting to come across the hammer mansion house…book me in on your next walking tour… Animal spirits. ..they maybe your guides.
It is unusual Allan, but shouldn't be. Dogs SHOULD be just running about having their own fun in the woods, trained not to bother strangers. I love to see it on the rare occasions it happens! But the fact is that almost all dogs these days have been either spoilt rotten and expect every human to fuss over them like their owners do, or neglected to the point where they are aggressive and confrontational. So strange? no - but rare, yes! It's such a shame that it freaks you out to see the way things should be if, as a culture, we hadn't lost the plot about dogs and had more of a responsible, balanced approach to owning and training them. (PS Anybody claiming anything supernatural in the comments is just an idiot - sorry! 😅Well done for not pandering to them. But that's a different 'state of the modern world' rant for another day!)
I agree, it was a bit odd. I am very much a dog person and have worked and trained many large breeds. It was the fact that I got zero reaction, even though he passed within about 5 foot of me. Even if he was in pray drive, I would of expected him to at least glance at me on the way past. Especially as I called to him as he was approaching. 🤔
