I didn't realize you reacted to this song over a year ago. This is my second-favorite Styx song. What a great band. I was either at the end of junior high or starting high school when this song came out and I loved it. What's funny is Jeep had a vehicle out at that time called the Renegade and I really, really wanted one. Couldn't afford a vehicle at that time though. Now, I always associate this song with that vehicle, and not just outlaws.
An old favorite. It was Easter 1979 in Upstate NY that I first heard this song. When we were kids we used to get one or two gifts for Easter, and my sister got The Grand Illusion and Pieces Of Eight albums and we listened to them constantly. I was 14. In the springtime we always cleaned out the garage thoroughly, put down cheap carpeting, huge screen windows at the garage door so we could open it up in the summer, and we'd always have a stereo and turntable set up. I just remember being out there cranking up those Styx lps. God, I miss those carefree days.
Finally, finally, finally you listened one (of many) outstanding STYX songs! My first concert was in 1980/81. They played twice at our Country Club (on the tennis court) and just rocked it! Tommy Shaw and fellow guitarist were on the back of a golf cart and waved to me (no one else there in the small parking lot). They continue to tour and is worth the price of admission. On a side note, the former lead singer, Dennis DeYoung is finally performing again. What a set of pipes!
Styx is awesome. Its two lead singers were Dennis DeYoung ("Come Sail Away," "Lady" and "Show Me the Way" are three of my favorites he sang) and Tommy Shaw (who sang "Renegade," "Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man)" and "Too Much Time on My Hands"). Brings back great memories of my teen years.
First album I ever bought. 1980. Styx has been my favorite band since. I have introduced my kids to Styx at a young age. Now age 31and 25, I took them to Styx concerts pretty much every year growing up. We LOVE THEM!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! What a wonderful song and a great reaction! Just going into high school when this came out. Arena rock! I don't think there was anyone who heard it who didn't love it.
Styx is a super awesome Band!! Love them...I saw them in Concert in the mid 1980's!! Partied with JY...James Young and his awesome band...he' s the lead guitarist and back up vocals in Styx....in Jacksonville Florida....where I live...in early 2000's!! They soon after, all got back together and did a tour...as Styx! They rock for sure!!✌☮🌞🌴🦋🎶🎵🎼
Wow!! Styx my favorite band of all time!! I was 12 when I first heard this song. My sister was having a high school graduation party in the basement. I went down the stairs to just behind the door to listen to the music she was playing on the stereo. Wow I was hooked. And still to this day my favorite song from my favorite band, and favorite lead vocalist Tommy Shaw.
Styx has always been such a rocking band! James young is an absolute walking badass on two legs - listen to that guitar sing and roar! He's been one of my favorite guitarists for 40+ years!
Styx was the soundtrack to my high school years! Lol - I have a special song that I think of for each of my three boys and Styx's "Fooling Yourself" is for my 22-year-old, he has a hard time believing in himself and I have to remind him a lot
one of their best songs! I love all their music! I've been listening and loving the band since my teenage years. I own every vinyl album they made as well. I could spend all day rocking with the.
I know what you mean about tempo breaks, and changes in songs, I love them as well. The Styx song "A.D. 1928/Rockin the Paradise" is a excellent example. I am a big fan of the use of synthesized keyboards in songs, that is what brought me to Styx, plus the fantastic singing and harmonies.
Tommy Shaw is a great guitar player, and singer! Very underrated, and versatile. Blew the speakers in my sister's "hi-fi" when this came out, never heard the end of it. WORTH EVERY MINUTE! Miss America is another great one, has the harmony's you like so much, and the added bonus of rock'n.
I heard Styx for the first time, and this song, at a laser light show, in a planetarium. They turned the lights completely off so you are in darkness, then they projected related pictures on the ceiling. For one song, you're looking up and see these clouds, and suddenly it started raining... inside! (not for this song, I can't remember which one)
Bad Ass!!! I was in high school and cruising up and down Broadway in muscle cars!! When that would come on, jammin was the order of the moment! You CRANKED it up and headbanged to it....Great group..Great music...just BadAzz!!!
I was out of college when I first heard this song, and in all reality, you're just having fun and working and all of that. When you get to hear this song with all the other great rock bands back then, it was pure heaven. Got to see them decades later, but still sounded the same!
I was 10 when this song came out. I remember growing up in Connecticut I used to walk just about everywhere in my town. Whenever I wanted to go somewhere, I either hopped on my bike or walked. I remember, I was going into this convenience store in my town that had THE best variety of ice cream cones in their freezer. So, I went there one afternoon and this song was playing on the radio the clerk had near the cash register. I loved it and still do! What a song. What an album!!
Knew you would appreciate this! I still have one of the first copies of the pieces of eight album on vinyl. This, come sail away, and Babe are probably my fav Styx Songs. good Stuff!!
I first heard Renegade on the radio one Saturday night during a “camp out” in my backyard with some friends. It was 1979. I was 13. I lost my mind. I began my hard rock/metal journey that night. That same week I heard “Carry On Wayward Son.” Game over.
music made to be listened to loudly! ive seen them live 3 times including pieces of eight tour. first time was pittsburgh 1977 ...caught 5 guitar picks in casper wyo... oh yeah !!! rock and roll my friends.
Steeler Fan here. This is what gets played during the timeout between the third and fourth quarters at Heinz Field. When the game comes back from commercial and the crowd's roaring - this is why. Great song!
Absolutely love Styx. They're my favorite rock band of all time. I remember listening to them on Casey Kasem top 40 in elementary school. We lived at Sheppard Air Force Base Texas. Awesome memories! Thanks for this one mrm
@@hurricane7479 that was a great observation. LOL what a small world the military is. Yes I was in Sheppard Air Force Base Texas in 79 as well. I was only 10 then. That was so funny
This band is iconic...I grew up listening to this band and love them....dig those harmoies...get into that groove....drums are awesome....killer synth....awesome lead guitar....this for Ty was a 2 head scratcher.....this band had it all
Heard this song on the radio when I was in 7th grade and bought the album. It was one of the first albums I owned and it was when I was beginning to explore music outside of what my parents played at home. Ended up buying each one of there albums. Great rock music. Thanks for reviewing!
A very good friend of mine in Vegas was Promotions Manager for STYX in the day. He traveled with them all over the world. The stories I've heard....LOL.
This was a song I heard a lot when I was back in college 94-96, even though it has already been released, my college roommate played this group like a lot, along with others. Now I have heard Dennis Deyoung before *DESERT MOON* that was my intro to him, but I was already drummer having survived high school band, hearing this song gave me an appreciation for how really good drumming can control mood, tempo and atmosphere of a song.
I was 11 years old in the spring of 1979. My parents were on vacation and my 2 siblings and I had our awesome next door neighbor babysitting us. As soon as I starting hearing this song on the radio (WLS AM 890 Chicago) I ran out to the Flipside (record store) and bought the 45. Played it and played it and played it. Redrew the cover art because that's what you do. And played it and played it and played it. Awesome. Words and phrases this 11 year old didn't even know the meaning of: "Long Arm of the Law"; "Gallows"; "Renegade"; "Retrieved"; "Bounty"; "Jig is Up"
Styx will always be my favorite band! Every album (up to killroy) were gold!! Every song was great, no skipping forward to hear the next song! I've requested my kids play come sail away for my final departure ! I saw Styx a few yrs ago and Tommy Shaw is timeless!! Please do more STYX!!!
I don't remember the very first time I heard it because it was 40 years ago. But I do remember it got a lot of air play on rock radio. It was the summer between 6th and 7th grade. I was at my best friend's house for the third night in a row. South Park came on, Cartman sang the entire song several times, my friend and I looked it up, and over a decade later it's still one of our favorites
This song is played as a motivational tool at Pittsburgh Steelers home games and the stadium comes alive and the football team reacts to the song and the crowd it’s a neat thing to see
You are ROCKIN! Styx frontman, Tommy Shaw, hometown boy that struck gold. Watched him for years playing the local circuit. Very, very talented artist. My daughter could, pretty much, sing every song on "The Greatest Hits" CD when she was, like, 5. She's 22 now and has a learned taste in music. She also fell in love with Queen at a very young age. Gotta raise em right! Lol
These reaction videos are new to me, and I find them very interesting. Seeing someone's reaction to a song I've heard and enjoyed probably a hundred times is quite fun. Well done. If this old man might suggest two one hit wonder songs for your edification, try Mississippi Queen, by Mountain, and/or My Sharona, by The Knack.
I was a kid when this came out. Naturally any song named "Renegade" will automatically attract the attention of a 12 year old me. And then add in the hangman, gallows and wanted man with killer keyboards, guitars and drums and unique vocals (American QUEEN?) and I was sold. I got to see the original lineup on their last tour, when Pat Benatar opened up for them. Great show! You should try "Blue Collar Man", "Grand Illusion", "Foolin Yourself" or "Too Much Time on my Hands", all solid radio hits.
Queen of Spades. Best Styx song ever. I'm not a big fan of Lawrence Gowan (replacement for Dennis DeYoung) but there is a youtube video of a his cover of this song and it's amazing.
Queen of Spades was the first song I heard from Styx as a kid (first rock song period). I was only 11 years old and I said: Where has this been all my life? Became a rocker after that.
STYX - Sweet madam Blue, The Grand Illusion, Foolin Yourself, Lorelei, Come Sail Away, Crystal Ball, Lady, Lights, Snowblind, The Best of Times, Babe, Lights, Blue Collar Man, Why Me, Great White Hope, Love in the Midnight.
You should look into "Mr. Roboto" from Styx. Lol. My sister is to blame for getting me into it. I can remember being like 4 years, and my sister was around 15-16, and that was back when MTV was legit, and had music videos on it etc. We lived out in the boonies, and I do mean the boonies. We lived in the NE corner of North Carolina....surrounded by swamps and all kinds of rivers etc. We had an old Quasar TV set that had the rabbit ear antenna and basically was analog TV...No cable, no wifi...this was like 1983 that I'm talking about...My sister would dress up in one of my dad's old brown sweaters (no matter the weather outside) with her favorite scarf (trying to do a poor man's version of Tom Baker from Dr. Who) and she would dress me up in something crazy straight out of her closet and do part of my hair in micro braids and put some of her make-up on me all funky (so I could look like Boy George from Culture Club) and we would sit in front of the TV on a Saturday afternoon and watch some Dr. Who (which I barely remember anything about the program) and some MTV....after we had agreed to do some chores first of course. It was weird for her to be into rock much, because she was more into some of the synth-pop from the 80s like Human League or Duran Duran etc. My brother was a "Hair Metal" kind of guy...he was into KISS, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, you name it. Good times had by all.
My favorite Styx song... Made to be played LOUD on the car radio!
There are not volume levels high enough for this song! (Heaven knows I've tried.)
As much as I like Renegade mine is Suite Madame Blue/America
Also, from the same album, Blue Collar Man needs to be cranked.
And anothet lesser known rocker from the same album the needs to be cranked. czcams.com/video/FXd0JR2SRE8/video.html

Styx also did a live concert with orchestra musicians playing the flute, violin, sax, clarinet n many more. It was a bad asss show.

There are so many excellent Styx songs, and the one that Moves me to tears every time I hear it is "Show me the Way"

19 years old with a 1978 jeep cj-5 black with the renegade package --- they called me renegade , love the song ...
Crazy, in '83 I got my first "car." Army green CJ5 with the same "Renegade" hood decals. Loved that Jeep!
Love this song.... Also Styx song Lady... If the memories of Junior high and high school
My fave Styx song too. My cousin Butch got me into them. My immediate family was visiting my uncle in Canada. Good times. 👍
this song has a very long history going back to me in college in North Carolina in the late 70..early 80's at the Mountain Turf Bar. Mind blown!!!

That '70s badass harmony just highkey kicks that fission into gear, don't it? I love this song. Just rediscovered it myself a couple weeks back.
I think I had on a 45rpm back in the day. 🤣 I heard it on a station out of Cincy & it was jaw dropping to me in the 70's.
Ooh this song!!! Is my ultimate Styx song!!!!
Been a while since I had a STYX fix. I knew MRM was in for a treat when he was impressed to a head scratch on the tight harmonies from the get go. Lol

I was 4. But I know I heard it on top 40 radio.
Gawd, I was 3 years out of college...got ya beat on age, LOL!!!
The summer before starting highschool...camping with my best friend at a State Park in Muskegon Michigan.
Should be on every roadtrip playlist on Earth.
More Styx!!!
Styx are rock gods. Thanks MRM
My fav Styx song too.playing it in my old dodge challenger wide open the song and the speed
The bands name is from Greek mythology. The river Styx was the border between Earth and the Underworld.
High school. Late 70s. Cruising with my buddy's.
I bought this on 8-track back in the 70's. There are a lot of great songs on this album, Pieces of Eight!
Same here. I even still have the 8-track of it...just no player to play it on.
Another great song from my childhood great memories
I remember listening to this in Junior High. Really got into it.

@@MajahDancer Paradise Theater was my first concert, I was 12 and it was amazing.!
Mr. Roboto! (jk)
It brought me back to high school playing tennis, nice.
Styx was my 1st concert, 13 yrs old. Great songs and harmonies. You had so much fun watching this one, I smiled and jammed with you!
The Steelers currently use this as their stadium anthem.
Great song, happy your enjoying!
Still sounds great so many years later:)
This is a very good introductory song for you MRM. I do hope you do more to find out you only heard the "tip of the iceberg".
Styx❤
Ty as soon as I seen Styx Renegade, I said well this will be a head scratching jam for MRM, and I was right!!!!!!
