If I Could Only Have One FujiFilm Lens

  • I recently got asked in a comment, "If you could only have one lens, which would it be?" After doing some thinking, this is the conclusion I cam up with and the one FujiFilm lens I would choose.
    Will this change? Most likely, but for now, this is what my choice would be. What lens would you choose?

    Fuji is updating their 18-55, so I wouldn't be surprised if the 16-55 gets the treatment as well. Would be nice to see a smaller/lighter package and smoother bokeh.

    For me its going to be the Samyang / Rokinon 135mm F2 manual lens. The performance is through the charts. Though an older lens (and recently updated as an AF for other platforms) it still one of the sharpest lens out there both for full-frame / APS-C. You can adapt it, or get it on the XF mount. The color, contrast, bokeh, and that bright aperture just creates unique photos with depth.
    I probably would love the 33 1.4mm, but I actually really enjoy the XF 35mm F2, even after owning the 35mm 1.4. The XF35mm F2, just feels great to use, has snappy performance, and has a very even global rendering.

    This is a question I’ve asked myself many times, just for fun. I’ve owned many great Fuji lenses, some very expensive ones (for me) and my choice would be the 70-300 because it allows me to capture types of photos that is important for me. It can magnify a lot, so I can use it for semi-macro photography, and it can zoom in a bit so it’s a great lens for bird photography (if you can get somewhat close) which I’ve had a lot of fun with.

    I have the Sigma 18-50 for my Sony and it is really quite incredible what they've pulled off. The close focus, the sharpness and the speed of AF all in a compact size. Amazing for travel but like all zooms it doesn't feel like you're in control of the creativity. You move around and compromise with a prime but a zoom fixes almost any issue you may have.

    • @philporto
      @philporto  Před 9 měsíci +1

      So I really like the 23, and I will clarify that if I had to choose one wedding as solely a wedding photographer, it could be a consideration, but I think what the 33 offers in all the fields I shoot, it edges out. But i preach REAL MOMENTS and the look of a grooms/ brides face when he/she sees his /her wife for the first time in a ceremony or first look is one of the realest moments. The 18 and 23 make me have to shoot closer and be more intrusive to really capture that emotion without having to crop crop crop. • @philporto
      @philporto  Před 9 měsíci +1

      the GFX is amazing, its just different. Def not going to get that kind of smooth and fast AF. Shaw will never be as quick as Kobe. Two totally different players. You will get the sharpness and quality at a whole other level though!

    • @jliang70
      @jliang70 Před 9 měsíci

      I have GFX and Sony and Fuji XF, but my XF system is distinct ancient it is the old XT20 which I bought about 5 years ago. Still love its compactness but it does not match Sony A7RIV for autofocus and operating speed and resolution, but its jpeg has better color. On GFX the zoom lens of choice is GF45-100mm F4, it is one lens you can carry around doing majority of the shooting, it is your full frame equivalent of 35-80mm . For primes I would have gone for 55mm F1.7 or 110mm F2. 55mm F1.7 is close to 44mm it is a lens that sits between 40mm and nifty 50. I shot with 40mm (Sigma and Voitglander) and 50mm lenses and I prefer the slightly wider 40mm, therefore on GFX system I will go for the 55mm. I have so many Sony E mount lens that I can't use on the fuji systems likes my monster 28mm, 40mm and 105mm Sigma F1.4. There are so many focal length gaps with the GFX system, there is no 135mm, 200mm, 300mm, 400mm primes and there is also no zoom lens like a 100-400mm or 150-600mm Sigma for wild life shooters. I have adapted Canon EF mount lenses like Sigma 85mm, 135mm and Canon 200mm and 300mm F4 to fill the gap.

    I don't do events and weddings much, neither do I do a lot of videos, and I don't make money from my photography, so I come from a very different angle, but I think we agree on most points.
    I love love love the 33mm f1.4 and I think I'd choose that lens over others as well. It's so versatile and I can do both street photography and portrait photography with that lens and I won't feel that I'm missing out (maybe I can appreciate something tighter for portraits sometimes but I can make the 33 work for even headshots).
    The only situation where I would find the 33 a bit lacking is when I go hiking. I feel the same way that the Fuji zooms can't compare with their primes. They're more than decent, but if you want the image quality, the primes are way ahead. I have a 16-80 f4 for this purpose and it's pretty good for my needs as it's the only lens I need to take with me on a hike, and f4 is more than enough for landscapes. It isn't the sharpest zoom out there, but it's light and versatile and offers enough image quality for landscapes. If I still hike as much as I did, I'd might choose the 16-80 over the 33, but since I'm mostly in the city now, I'd take the 33 over the 16-80 any day.

    • @philporto
      @philporto  Před 9 měsíci

      yeah hiking would be a whole different scenario for sure. real wide and super tight highlight the area so much better but, being that I dont do much of that, no need, but it def would change the game for sure!

    You lost me when you stated that the 16-55, 2.8 Fuji lens isn’t good enough? I’ve been using this zoom lens for years and find it extremely sharp at every focal length.
    I agree that the 33 1.4 is an incredible lens if you like better separation in your subject then a 2.8.
    Perhaps your real issue is the size of the zoom lens?

      @mikec1851 Před 8 měsíci +1

      Agree 100%. I've had the 16-55mm for years and it is a great lens. Granted it is a bit big and heavy but at 2.8 constant aperture that is to be expected. To say that it isn't good enough?? Isn't good enough for what?? I've gotten some great images using that lens.

    I use the holy trinity of 18, 23 and 33mm f1.4. Of the three I’d struggle to choose between the 23mm or the 33mm. 100% agree on the Canon comment. I had the 16-35mm L USM f2.8 mark 2 . Was like prime images from a zoom all day.

    I think it all depends upon what your photographing, I have three Fujifilm cameras, the XH2, XT5 and XT3, I have the 16-55, 10-24, 100-400 along with several different primes from Fujifilm and Viltrox they all serve a purpose as I photographed different subjects under different conditions. Along with the Fujifilm cameras I have Pentax, Panasonic ,Olympus with all formats covered, full frame, APSC and micro 4/3,

    • @philporto
      @philporto  Před 9 měsíci

      Yeah everything is situational for sure. Since I shoot so many kinds of photography professionally, the 33 just makes the most sense if I had to have one. If I was solely doing couple portraits or families, itd probably be the 18. If it was concerts and dance parties, 10-24 easily. Its all situational.

  • @PeterEvansPeteTakesPictures
    @PeterEvansPeteTakesPictures Před 8 měsíci

    The only lens I have of the new generation of primes is the 18mm f/1.4 and I love it. The 33mm is tempting to be sure but honestly the 35mm f/1.4 still has a very nice look and I feel a sense of betrayal if I ever traded her in. Both her and the 18mm f/2 were the first Fuji lenses I ever bought, and I still shoot them! The update to the 56mm is more tempting though as I shoot a lot of low-light performance art, dance and gig work and the autofocus isn't quite up to it with the original lens. I get by with it and I love the images, but the new 56 would make things a lot easier for me.
    But it's silly to lust after new lenses for me because I've taken to spending lens money on going places now instead. An okay lens and a great subject is better than a great lens and a ho-hum subject.

  • @MichaelLaing71
    @MichaelLaing71 Před 9 měsíci

    Lens of choice is always going to be the focal length you are most happy with. If I had to have one lens for a Fujifilm camera, it wouldn't be a Fujifilm lens. It would be the Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 with Nokton an adapter. For a start, the lens, whilst not being able to compete optically with the 56mm, it really doesn't matter, I have used the lens professionally for years and it is good enough, when stopped down a little.
    It also acts as an 85mm on a APS-C and whilst it does have some vignetting, I can use it on my GFX100s, so I have the equivalent of 2 lenses (of course, in real life I also have a Nikon D850, so I can use it at 3 focal lengths).
    What is most important is it is a hugely fun lens to use and it manual focuses like a dream.

    Nice thoughts,
    I'm a long term professional Fuji user, If I could keep 1 lens only that I own, it would be the 35mm F/1.4.
    However if I was to buy again it would be the 33mm F/1.4 WR.
    I agree with your ZOOM argument... Fuji zooms are ok, they just don't make me think "yep that is what I wanted" I always feel the photos are compromised.
    However now I am shooting a lot more with the Sigma 56mm F/1.4 and just added the 23mm F/1.4 which I am really happy with (more importantly my clients are).

    Always interesting to think about which lens you'd choose but I'd never travel or shoot a wedding with just one lens, especially a prime. For me it's a no brainer. The 16-55 2.8. Ok, it's not as sharp as the Canon EF 24-70 mk II 2.8 zoom (still my favorite lens). I agree with you that the mark II of the EF 24-70 was amazing- super sharp. Fuji isn't as sharp but it's close enough for me and sharper than some primes. Then again, what do I know, I'd choose the 18-55 2.8-4.0 over a prime if I had to travel with only one lens. If Fuji comes out with a 16-55 replacement I hope it is smaller

    Spot on, the red Fuji zooms just don't have that Fuji feel. 16-55mm f2.8 vs 16mm f1.4 (one of my favorites) - the prime just looks better when both at 16mm f2.8. The even older 50-140mm is another go to for me, but falls into a similar situation. They fall flat sometimes even when compared to cheaper more "kit" zooms like the 18-135mm and certainly against many recent primes. That said, I still use the red zooms often and hope they refresh. A little faster, a little quieter, a little more character.

    Great video! and am almost right there with you on the new 33 …. bit I will personally have to go with the new 23 :)
    I am wondering if it is just time spent at this focal length that has me hooked on the 23.
    I did a party recently and chose the 33 as my only lens … there were sooo many people and i really love showing more context so i felt a bit to constrained. so will have to go 23 for parties like this.
    Now I Find i can easily choose the 33 for couples and single family group photos and get everything i need! I actually really love the simplicity!!
    My most recent couples shoot I challenged myself to using the New 56 only the entire shoot! it was actually really interesting…. after realizing what i needed to do, to get it to focus fast enough on a small child running around and get the parents blurry in background. everything else went super smooth… aaaannnnndddd what I found out…. man!!! i could really use any single focal length and come away with a shoot i am happy with :) .
    More on that 56 tho…. do you use it? …. I know this might sound silly but I found it was actually toooooo sharp. Quite a few images reminded me a bit of my iphone :/ not all tho just about half the images…. all which were back lite?…. The 3d pop at 1.2 when hit right does look nuts tho! just not really my personal favorite look.
    Back to your vid tho!!! lol I agree the 33 is a almost perfect choice for THE ONLY lens ;)

    • @philporto
      @philporto  Před 9 měsíci +2

      man these are all stellar points. So the 23 is a lens that i love. as is the 18. But when choosing one, i thought of which lens can capture some of the most important moments best. The 18 and 23 produces, esp the 18, produce some of my favorite portraits. But i preach real moments and the look of a grooms face when he sees his wife for the first time in a ceremony or first look is one of the realest moments. The 18 and 23 make me have to shoot closer and be more intrusive to really capture that emotion without having to crop crop crop. So for me, capturing the moments plus not being intrusive was a key to choosing this lens. as far as parties, i love close andcrazy for sure, but i also know i can be more intrusive yet fun in those moments and still get what i need.

Love the zooms but they only get used on rare occasions. They're good lenses but too heavy and large for travel and street photography.
