Your family is so interesting! It's crazy that English, Japanese, and Korean floats around in your family like that haha. When I was growing up many of my White friends would tell me that they wish they could speak another languages besides English since I spoke Vietnamese at home. My parents knew English too, but it was their second language so they kinda just knew enough.
I kinda feel bad that I think my Vietnamese is just conversational, so I don't think I could teach my kids someday Vietnamese since I'd probably be considered illiterate in Vietnamese. Some of my friends think its interesting that I can speak Japanese too, it was just a language I've always wanted to learn so I took classes in college :)

    • @kennethh7881
      @kennethh7881 Před 8 lety +10

you should totally teach your kids vietnamese its better to be illiterate then not know at all and if you introduce them to the language threw tv shows at a younger age it can help them and you too
i have a friend who is Vietnamese and cant really speak it that well becuase she doesnt want to use itand it kinda breaks my heart to see she lose a giant part of her culture

I feel like I can kind of relate to you. My siblings and I are with 7 as well. I have 3 older sisters and 3 younger brothers and my sisters and I speak English fluently, but my brothers and parents do not. I converse in English with my sisters alot, and its kind of like a secret language, but recently my mothers been trying to understand/ understanding more and more and it makes me feel kinda scared, but happy at the same time haha.
Also, I live in the Netherlands, but my mom is a white, christian, Dutch woman and my father is a black, muslim, Sudanese man, so I kind of grew up in different cultures as well. None of my siblings ever learned Arabic, though. It's because my mother never knew any and my dad would usually just speak Dutch to us. He was usually working when we were young as well. All we learned were basic words like hello, what you say before a meal, etc.

thanks a lot for the video, your family is so adorable and interesting! another question: do all of your siblings have names in Korean, Japanese and English? Or is it like random? I mean one is called Brian (English), one Benji (I guess Japanese?) and one Kyuntae (Korean?), and you and your sisters mostly English? did you get your Japanese name Chiho after moving to Japan or did you already have it?

I really like to hear about families like yours: so many different languages! My family is like that aswell. My mom is Russian, father is Georgian and we live in Estonia. I'm fluent in Russian and Estonian but my parents can't really speak Estonian well. I also go to German/Estonian school so my German is quite good. My mom's an English teacher so I guess my English is not that bad (but my Russian accent is terrible!). I also learn Spanish and I'd like to learn Korean but there aren't any teachers in Estonia:( I can't speak or understand any Georgian (father doesn't live with us and when I see him we speak Russian which is even easier for him). My little sister who lives with my dad also speaks Russian. Oh also I can speak Russian perfectly but I'm bad at writing and grammar because I've never learned Russian grammar properly and it makes me anxious. Yeah, it's complicated.

Those of you who speak English fluently should really do your best to teach it to your family, especially your younger siblings who (I think) are young enough to pick it up easily. They might initially resist it because they see it as nothing more than a chore but they'll realize the importance of it when they're older and out pursuing a career.

I used to have a language barrier with my siblings too. Actaully I also had language barrier with my father since I literally met him when I was 6. My mom and dad divorced when I was 6 months and I grew up with my maternal grandparents in France. My grandfather is French and my grandma is Turkish but she didn't teach me any. When my father decided to take me I didn't know any Turkish and I moved Turkey without knowing anything about it. I lived in Turkey about 4 years and then moved to US and lived there until I was 17. I'm not sure but suddenly my mom wanted me around after 17 years of her absence and I moved back her. She married with a German guy and has 2 kids. When I moved at her, I didn't know any German and kids were young to know English. I stayed with them until college and moved back to Turkey. But oh gosh having language barrier with like every relative is so stressing. I couldn't communicate with my paternal grandma because she can't speak French. And I had to go through this like every 5 or 6 years. I'm glad that I finally settled down somewhere. I ain't intention of moving and starting over from scratch.

having a mother is a blessing that thousands of people wish they had...just like what you said in one of your vlogs that people always want to have what they don't have and everyone has to appreciate what they already have i know you never said you don't want your mom but it always seems that you'd rather be alone then being with your mom or with your siblings then being with your mom...her wanting to learn a lang you know is because she want to understand you when you're talking or that she want to share the same thoughts...her not letting you do whatever you want whenever you want is because she's worried on you you may say but she doesn't really take a good care of me the fact she raised 7 kids is amazing just think about it if you became a mom could you take care of 7 kids???...when you become a mom you appreciate what she did for you way more...lots of love..god bless you

Besides, she's 21 years old to cling on her Mom :) I'm like steph and my mother dont mind at all. We have a different family types and steph's family is unique. So maybe it's not bad if she decided to say she doesnt want her mom to learn english. She never said she WAS AGAINS on it. :) God bless you, my love. x

When Steph was back in America, her and her family would communicate in Korean since her and her family lived near/with all of their Korean relatives and Steph's dad is Korean (his first language is Korean) and Steph's mom when to a Korean university so her Korean was perfect. Hope that helps clear things up a bit :)

A lot of companies in Japan according to trade magazines are going to transition to English as the companies official language due to all the issues they have conducting international technical business. I guess they lose a lot of time and money due to communication issues with technical material that is already complete like blue prints and designs etc....Same thing applies to internal communications that need to be in sync with people in other countries with other companies. Who knows how well it is going to work out. I think they gave some future date like 2020 for the change over. In this way it will not matter if they are doing business with a German company or a Dutch company or a Brazilian company if they all use English it means one common language for documents skipping the need for time consuming translation from Japanese into the specific target language for the company they are doing business with since most other populations around the world learn English in school or at University and so many people study in the USA at University or attend schools in their country that speak in English. Should be interesting to see how that goes. No one outside of Japan uses Japanese for technical, business or political documents so really they are by themselves politically and business wise with the use of Japanese it is not even one of the approved languages for international banking or for any of the large political organizations! On top of that it is a hard language to learn to read and right well too many character's. I love your video's!!! Thanks!

Oh gosh, I'm pretty sure Steph didnt mean it that way, Ive been watching Steph since September, havent missed a single vlog and I know for sure that she didnt mean it in a negative way. Thats just not Steph's nature to be mean. I'm sorry girl, you'rere obviously new to her channel. Disrespectful? Shit yall overthink way too much. Just let the girl vlog, and share her own thoughts without getting judged. Almost on every video, someone just hasss to jump down this girl's throat on everything. Steph has apologized too many times for her words, and theyre not even malicious or intentionally hurtful. I don't know man, i don't mean to throw a mini tantrum on here, but I'm just really sick of seeing Steph, this super bubbly and happy girl, get impacted by these all of these unnecessary comments.

If your dad is still studying where do you guys get money to support yourself? Im guessing you get money from youtube and your sisters support themselves, but how does it work otherwise? (Sorry don't mean to pry, im just curious)

What visa does your family have? I'm under the assumption that all or most of your family are American citizens.

can you do a video on similarities and differences between you and all your siblings? [ with most your siblings]
personally i have a much older brother and sister
and we're all different. my sister is 1.83 , blonde, naturally skinny, gray eyes.
my brother 1.80[sh] dark hair , green and brown eyes.
and I'm 167, chubby xD and brown eyes and hair.
we all came out supper different looking, but also our likes and dislikes.
my sister can't be around animals because of allergies, and she can't drink milk.
my brother just doesn't like animal furr, and he also can't drink milk.
I LOVE ANIMALS , and I don't drink milk because it tastes bad, but I can drink it.
and all of us have an allergy to metal.
my sister likes to show off how "rich" she is [she isn't]
my brother likes to buy as cheap as possible, and only get what is needed.
and I like more humble stuff, I'll only buy what I like, regardless of the price, be it cheap or super expensive.
do you have any of these weird differences between your siblings?

This is probably the 3rd time I've watched one of your videos. I really love these videos to be honest. After watching your videos I decided I will go to SNU. I just have a question do they have programs for engineering? Also is it safe for a Muslim girl by herself to study over there? I'm only 16 in 10th grade and it will take me all the way into college to convince her.

+Zoya Atiq Ma'shallah. thank you so much! I want to go to Korea in an exchange program. I don't know how I'll convince my mother... it is going to be so hard. She is very protective, and cautious. I would love to know your sisters experience, but I'm not sure if I have a way to talk to her. Does she have an email or something? I'm a 16 Muslim girl so I hope it's okay!

exas4791 since i dont see a reply ill say my experience. i havent witnessed any, and sometimes i notice that the japanese are apologetic in a way because they recognize the korea split is partially their fault, mainly in the older generations.
