- Did you know that there are 154 national forests and 22 national grasslands in the U.S.? These public lands are managed by the U.S. Forest Service and are great options for RV camping at little to no cost. While most of these lands only offer dispersed camping, some have more developed campground sites with things like RV hookups, fire pits, and picnic tables.
Campendium can help you find the perfect campsite for you and your rig in national forests or national grasslands. Here are a few things to look for on Campendium listings when you’re researching your next site on these public lands.
🏕️ Type of camping. You can filter Campendium listings to find the type of national forest camping you’re looking for, like dispersed sites, tent camping, or developed campgrounds. This will help you begin your search in the right direction.
🗓️Stay limit. These can range from 3 to 30 days for public lands, so know how long you want to stay and what the limit is before planning your trip.
🛻 Accessibility. Some of these lands are only accessible by high-clearance, off-road vehicles. Check the recommended vehicle type and ensure your rig is equipped to access your site.
☀️ Season. Know whether or not the campsite is open seasonally or year-round and book your trip accordingly.
📏 Rig length. Campendium listings will often provide maximum RV lengths so you know whether or not your rig is suitable for the site.
🔍 Reviews. Always read Campendium reviews and check out images from other campers to get a better idea of what the site looks like, what amenities and features it offers, and how other campers ranked the campground.

Great information.
As an avid 4x4 enthusiast I visit various off grid dispersed campgrounds. There are many beautiful places which do not get urban campers screwing up good, easy accessible, locations.
If you look up 360 videos for Campendium, it's perfect for seeing the campsites and the roads that take you there. You don't have to have a 3D headset but if you do it's a fantastic way to experience it.
Thank you ‘til next time 🏕️
Great info! It disappointing to read one of the articles on the Campendium site about necessary changes for dispersed camping rules because people can't respect the land. I have been a camper my whole life and have always left little trace and respected the rules and regulations. The Covid pandemic has brought out a whole new crowd of people who just don't get it. Keep abusing the land and we will eventually lose most of the opportunities we have to free camp.
If you went into foreign countries and visited outside the tourists attractions you'd get the bigger picture.
@@hitnrun1805 not sure what you mean. I don't go to tourist attractions. I off grid camp. Never seen most of the crowds I see there now before the pandemic. What is the "big picture" I'm not seeing?
@@darenaubiephotography8570 Hopefully they pick up after themselves. Kinda scary to hear you say this about crowds.
Good info, thanks.
