2. *Tools Required:* You'll need a sharp saw or machete, pruning shears, measuring tape, and safety gear (gloves and protective eyewear).
3. *Measuring and Marking:* Decide on the length you want to cut the bamboo to. Measure and mark the desired length using a pencil or chalk.
4. *Safety Precautions:* Wear gloves and protective eyewear to avoid splinters and debris while cutting.
5. *Cutting Technique:*
- For smaller diameters: Use pruning shears to cut through bamboo stalks with diameters less than 1 inch.
- For larger diameters: Use a sharp saw or machete. Place the bamboo on a stable surface and use a controlled motion to cut through it. A gentle rocking motion while sawing can help make the process smoother.
6. *Angle of Cut:* For a clean and even cut, hold the cutting tool at a slight angle (around 45 degrees) to the bamboo stalk. This prevents splintering and ensures a smoother edge.
7. *Support the Bamboo:* To prevent the bamboo from splintering or cracking as you cut through it, it's helpful to have someone hold the other end firmly or place the bamboo in a vice.
8. *Smooth the Edges:* After cutting, you might notice some rough edges. Use sandpaper or a file to smooth out any splinters or rough spots.
9. *Treatment and Storage:* To prevent insect infestations and mold growth, consider treating the cut ends of the bamboo with a wood preservative or a mixture of borax and water. Store the cut bamboo in a dry and ventilated area to prevent moisture buildup.
10. *Crafting or Use:* Once cut, the bamboo can be used for various purposes like crafting, construction, or even as plant stakes. Make sure to utilize the bamboo promptly to prevent it from drying out or becoming brittle.

Almost all northeastern states use bamboo chattai to build a house and that last for at least twenty years or more than that if that's made properly in rural areas, even me recently built a three room house and I think that will last for at least twenty years or so on, it's cheap and affordable for a middle class people like us. Love from Nagaland.

One good thing about these workers is.... they are so diligent & skilled with their ancient & primitive tools. One bad thing about them is..... they haven't ever heard of modern manufacturing process, much less adopt it. Result ? Backbreaking labour & very poor productivity .

@@mathewmaheo4806 typically, the innermost layer is discarded as it is somewhat pithy, brittle and most susceptible to insects and decay.
My guess is the middle three layers are sent to a plyboo facility to be woven, glued and pressed into sheets similar to plywood. The inside layer is likely discarded and the outermost used for weaving.
