    I’d use water first to hydrate them for at least 24 hrs. I’ve also been using fluvalstratum for rooting and rehabbing. Works like a charm

    • @ErikaLodes
      @ErikaLodes  Před rokem +4

      I am so afraid to put them in water bc I feel like they’ll turn to mush 🥲

    • @erikm8372
      @erikm8372 Před rokem +5

      Dont be scurred! Only rehydrate plants in water for like, a few hours, maybe up to a day… then pot them when they’re nice and hydrated ;) …or, pot them in sphagnum, then soak the pot in a tray if water for like 2 hours; then remove and let it drain, preferably elevated (or on marbles, rocks, gravel) so air passes below.
      Also…don’t be worried; on some of those plants (like the El choco, the mamei, etc.), you can actually snip half of the dried roots off. In some cases, it’s actually better for the plant to start over, which its going to do anyway - growing new roots. More organic matter, I.e., dried root material floating around, can degrade water quality faster thus leading to the plant rotting.
      Personally, i would soak them for maybe six hours, maybe 12, idk, lol…then switch to sphagnum moss or an orchid MIX (not orchid bark). So basically, a chunky mix with worm castings and finer coco fibers. Sorry long comment hehe

      @teddyruxbin9300 Před rokem +4

      Yeah, I would leave them soaking in water for an hour or two after they have been transported. They are more likely to rot in moss than in water, just saying. I always add a little hydrogen peroxide to the water too.

      @AnjiiTheAmazinOMG Před rokem +1

      Yeah their roots are so delicate especially in dry moss. So I had anxiety when you were taking them off without wetting the moss first 😅

    Getting new plants really feels like being kids and going to playgrounds or toy shops. the excitement is super awesome.
    Anyways, my Warocqueanum took almost 2 months to stabilize. All the while being worried. Just shot out a new leaf few days back and it was such an ecstatic feeling! like finally!

  • @erikm8372
    @erikm8372 Před rokem +1

    It wont be awful to switch them from moss to soil… just do what I do, don’t bother with the soil! Haha. They dont honestly need it really. Especially if you fertilize. I’ve switched many of my plants to sphagnum, in a desperate effort to avoid rot. I did it to a lot, like two years ago, including aeoniums, sedums, echeveria, other succulents, peperomias, bromeliads, ferns, and even cacti - and the difference is amazing. it’s the improved airflow I think. It also proves my ”theory” that these plants are generally low-feeders, as far as nutrition goes. Some aroids like diluted ferts more than others; for some, like ferns, succs, pep’s, or bromeliads, the moss is perfect for their entire lives. I just look at their natural habitat, what the soil is like, or id they’re epiphytic. For example, I wouldn’t pot lithops in sphagnum bc that’s not really how South African mineral-rich soil is! Although, lithops are full of surprises, and it wouldn’t shock me if they decided to live 100 years in sphagnum. Hmmm…
    If anything, I’d put your plants in moss/chunky mix, let them get rootbound a little first… then later on you repot the whole rootball, moss and all, into a newer, well-aerated mix. This could be like a chunky aroid mix, or a store bought orchid mix (nit bark!). You can amend orchid mixes w extra bark though, or pumice, perlite, etc.

    re: the Bulbophyllum, this is one of those times you can fill up the bottom 1/3 of the pot with gravel, leca, perlite, packing peanuts, etc. You really don't need more media than how long the roots get. Wooden baskets with sphag are also a good idea if you don't mind the maintenance.

  • @stefpix

    I leave most imported aroids in water until I see new root growth. Then perlite or sphagnum/perlite. I found I have more success this way. When I planted in soil I would lose more.
    How are the plants doing? I skipped as video is too long for me. I prefer tutorials in general that top at 10 min.
    But overall they seem happy in your cabinet. How much is the relative humidity?

    • @ErikaLodes
      @ErikaLodes  Před rokem

      They’re doing super well! Except for the warrocqueanum she’s become my trouble child. But other than her they all have new roots & new leaves coming out. The humidity is usually over 80

    How long do you wait to repot a plant when you get one? I’ve seen some people wait over a month, yet some do it immediately.

    • @sherryporsch9349
      @sherryporsch9349 Před rokem +2

      I’ve had good luck with putting them in super thrive water for 24 hrs to rehydrate an then pot them up. Everyone has their own way of doing things.

    • @noraramos3798
      @noraramos3798 Před rokem +1

      I received my latest import exactly a month ago today, and I put my plants in water with super thrive for 3 hours, and then put them directly into a super chunky aroid mix, and they’re all doing awesome!! For me, I go by what the roots look like. My plants all came in with healthy root systems, so that’s why I didn’t rehydrate them for long and I potted them up right away. If the roots had needed to be regrown I would have put them in moss or in water, depending on how I was feeling, and then I would have left them until I saw new roots and new leaf growth. Usually for me, I get new roots first, and then new foliage growth, so as soon as I get a new leaf I know the plant is ready to be potted up. Go with your gut instinct and you’ll be good! Good luck!

    • @ErikaLodes
      @ErikaLodes  Před rokem +1

      Well for imports it’s the process in the video, but for plants I get from a nursery I leave them in for a long time. Like around a year bc I’m lazy lol
      But if I can tell I do not like the soil mix & it’s really bad for the plant then I’ll do it in like a week. If you repot into your own mix then you are kind of used to it so it might be easier. Also you get to see the health of the roots. I never do it immediately, but it depends on what you think is best 😄
