  • Hey guys! Grab a drink, sit down and spare 24 minutes of your time for an incredible guy called Nick Johnston.
    We had a casual chat about his playing, his way of practising, his style, his relation to gear and about playing live music. We had a few jams too, which nearly made me wet my pants. Ha ha!
    Nick is talking about very important things, watch the whole interview if you can. You will learn from it for sure. I definitely did!
    This is the 1st video in my "A casual chat with..." series, I hope you like it. :)

    "It´s easy, you just need to know the rules..." Joke of the century, really, Nick is so humble he actually believes it. I actually think he can´t see how good he is and that his insane melody skills are just on a league of their own.

    Man, love this. Love Nick. I am going deep into these modern players that are pushing a clean but slightly driven tone with tasty chordings and also letting their runs rest with hanging on tones.

  • @JonathanBriseboisLamarche

    Nick is such a down to earth person and one of the most melodic and interesting player we have today! Thanks for doing this Kris!

    Humble guy yet super talented (whether he thinks so or not lol) but touches on the most important things in guitar playing here: developing by playing live; importance of fititng in and playing in a band or with other musicians; rhythm guitar playing as,well as lead.

    Your the best Nick! But how do lefties play righty?? Im a dominant lefty!! I throw like a girl with my right hand lol. I finger the neck no problem with my right but i have to play lefthanded. But i guess i'm kind of a freak cause i actually play a righthanded guitar upside down lefthanded. Albert king style. Jimmy could do it but he actually strung his righty guitars lefthanded the "correct way". To each his or hers own i say!! What ever makes you comfortable. I have run into road blocks the way i play but hurdle them and move on! I cant go back!! Been doing it this way for over 20 years now. Your style is amazing Nick! Inspiring!! Enjoying your new diamond series Atomic green schecter too!! Rock on guys!!

    3:20 very interesting comment from Nick. I have debated whether being a lefty playing right is an advantage technically (obviously an advantage in guitar selection) and when I was younger I would have thought there was a benefit to having your main hand on the fret board but as I have played more and had to do so much work on my picking technique (such as economy picking), finger picking, touch and feel with my right hand, I have realised there is also an advantage to having your picking hand being your main hand.

    Don't want to discourage anyone but the way he plays comes Natural. It is not just practicing a guitar for hours and hours.
    You can tell watching him play it is second nature to him. He knows what to do way before he plays it! Tell me i am wrong?

    Argh- I wish Kris would have asked Nick what he was thinking scale-wise over that Am Eb progression- I mean I know Nick started out in Am- but then when he shifted- did he "think" Eb major or something totally different, like Eb Mixolydian or just chord tones or what!

    • @sgtcaco
      @sgtcaco Před 4 lety

      I like the Am Lydian Sounding lick. I work it out by going Am Appegio into a tri tone and a Ab major appegio. The resolution sounds like a block buster movie theme. Fricken awesome. I will work on the lick you like tomorrow and see if I can figure out his thought process.
