Yuen Wah in an interview said Bruce Lee was trained in Wing Chun Kung fu that has no acrobatics in it. Yuen said, Bruce could do a simple cartwheel as he did in Enter the Dragonl, but did not know how to do gymnastics so he always used a stunt double in scenes requiring acrobatics. Yuen Biao was another stunt double who did the flip over the wall

Thank you for these scenes confirming that this is a stunt double for Bruce Lee. What's fascinating about Bruce's films is that his movements, in terms of timing and aesthetics, were always 100% perfect. He was truly a champion.
I Always believed it was Bruce who did everything..flips..etc! His stunt double Yuen Wah was lucky to have been born with Bruces slim physique. That back flip against Sammo Hung was so pefect that it still looks like bruce! I wish there was footage of them rehearsing during behind the scenes. Warner bros has to have it!
In a written interview ( in a MA magazine )Bruce said he was learn gymnastic moves sometime in the future,because he was so impressed with Yueh Wah's moves.But,we all know that never happened and I remember an interview in a bodybuilding magazine ( I believe it was Muscle & Fitness-Bruce was featured on the cover ) where they had a written copy on paper where Bruce wrote down his future goals.It included being a guest on the Johny Carson show an other things I can't recall.
@@ProfRobertStewart Yeah,Bruce's high kicks to Kareem's cost him pulled groin pains. I'm referring to the gymnastic stunts,those were done by his stunt double.
If you do screen shots of the opening fight of Enter the Dragon,one of Bruce seen from the back and again two shots later when he does his back flip and hit Sammo Hung with his fist, you will see that they are different, much stronger muscles for Bruce Lee and thinner for the stunt man.
@@ProfRobertStewart Hi!I took several screenshots and it's obvious if you compare both figures.Yuen Wah is taller and much thinner than Bruce Lee.Don't you think that if Bruce would have done all these,they would have shown his face?He is ALWAYS seen from the back after a flip-flap.Why? You seem like the kind of fan that would be also fooled by the ping-pong movie.A corean advertising from the 80's.Sorry i can't post pictures here,but if you have Enter the Dragon DVD or Blu-ray,do a few screenshots and honestly compare the bodies,and you will see.
@@damienmillereau5256 I had the same argument with this guy and did the same as you, pausing the flips and noting the difference in muscle definition and hair. I also paused the forward somersault in Fist of Fury and you can clearly see Yuen Wah's face. We know the "real truth".
What an amazing person he is!! Still looking and moving good in his later years.
He certainly had Bruce's moves pinpoint sharp in Enter the Dragon! If you are new to Bruce there is no way you'd be able to tell who is who in the clips.

See Yuen Wah in the movie Kung Fu Hustle. He is also the stuntman who challenged Bruce to a fight.

Im sure there is a minority out there who will now have something negative to say about Bruce not doing the flips, but no doubt had he lived Bruce would no doubt be a fantastic gymnast as well, he had that mentality. @ProfRobertStewart You seem upset because Bruce did not do everything. Very strange. You know it takes nothing away from Bruce's Martial ability. As for envious, that would be strange being envious on a channel that shows its admiration for Bruce. Maybe look up the word envious.
I completely agree, Yuen Wah is an amazing athlete and a true legend of Hong Kong cinema. I'm one of the lucky people to get the folder signed and photos of Yuen Wah by Steve Kerridge. I have no idea if Bruce could do somersaults. He may well have because there's pictures of him on a trampoline so maybe he did learn.I believe it was John Benn in an interview said Bruce would put a can up high on a post then jump up and kick it off while somersaulting and landing so maybe he could... @@StripeyRYuen Wah was a talented martial artist.He was one of the Chinese guys dressed in Japanese clothing that was goading Bruce Lee and sticking his finger in Bruce’s chest at the park in FIST OF FURY.I remember him in EASTERN HEROES and in DRAGONS FOREVER smoking the cigar while he was fighting.

The following statement is for the real BRUCE LEE fans : whether it wad Yuen Wah or not who did the flips for Lee doesn't do any harm to his legacy in any way, shape or form. Like Stripey says " Credit should be granted where it is due." Facts are that Bruce Lee in my my estimation he had the ability to do it himself...and that's not rocket science to figure out. Besides Lee was the asset of that particular productions and the producers did not deem it plausible that he did his own stunts right ?and we all know why or do we ? Keep doing what you're doing Stripey ...l ramble with it ...much love❤❤

Just a little fun facts that I had read. Bruce Lee had a old back injury that prevented him from taking the risk in doing the stunts. Yuen Wah is one of the best in acrobatics. Sammo Hung, Yuen Wah, Yuen Biao, Jackie Chan (and others) studied from a very young age at the Kowloon Chinese Drama Academy (an old Beijing Opera type school), where they learned martial arts, doing flips etc. When the school closed down, they went on to work as stunt men. There was a 1988 Hong Kong movie titled "Painted Faces" that told the story of their lives at the Beijing Opera house, starring Sammo Hung as the strict opera teacher, Master Yu Jim-yuen. Yuen Wah, also played the Tai Chi master (the landlord) in Stephen Chow's "Kungfu Hustle". If you had not watched that movie, watch it, it is wildly hilarious..that movie also had many real Hong Kong martial arts experts, acting in it. Yuen Wah is a real funny guy, even if he is playing the villain part. Cheers .

What an insightful look into Yuen Wah. He certainly helped make Bruce look more incredible on screen. As an aficionado of Bruce, I enjoy spotting Yuen's contribution to Bruce's films and even in those days, he was a great double for Bruce. This was a wonderful analysis as always.
Going over to The Game of Death, I always envision Yuen being intended to be used as Bruce's double when Kareem lowers Bruce's head towards the broken vase on the floor and Bruce actually performing the start of the stunt with lifting his legs despite his back injury. Even with the uneven editing in the 1978 version, it is still a great moment for me.
In regards to Yuen being listed on IMDB as being in The Way Of The Dragon, I find it surprising if he was in the film as we see Bruce's face literally through most of the film. Maybe a few back shots of Bruce where we don't see his face, such as when he first kicks Bob Wall, could be a possibility but there were no flips like Yuen did in the other films with Bruce that had them. I wonder if anyone has managed to pin point Yuen in the film anywhere. A real mystery.
Another great video Stripey, I did know who Yuen Wah was after reading about him many years ago doubling for Bruce in the more acrobatic stunts & flips. Always loved those sound effects in Enter The Dragon when he does the flip somersault over the monks with their arms raised. Impressive that he's still as active & flexible into his 70's! Bruce had an injured back and was not trained in Acrobatics. His father was from the Chinese Opera so his father was acrobatic. Yuen Wah was also from the Chinese Opera and from the same Opera school as Jackie Chan , Yuen Biao, and Samo Hung, and famed director Yuen Woo Ping.
his father played comedic roles, not acrobatic ones.
One of my idols growing up as he was and is to many. So much so, when i was young training in martial arts i also, trained in gymnastics so that i could be like him. NEVER knew
At 72 years old, he is in Kung Fu Hustle and Marvel's Shang Chi. Bruce was not a tumbler or a stuntman though he did choreograph fight scenes
Bruce admired gymnasts but couldn't do that stuff .. yuen wah played some amazing roles in various other HK movies he was great in my lucky stars and Eastern condors !
I have mention the fact he didnt do that kick in ETD and it has upset a few loyal fans who didnt know .. just like other facts about him such as he couldnt see that well without his glasses and he was also a poor swimmer , driver ...we cant be good at everything ! lol

In the movie industry, the main star always have a stunt double. If the main star gets hurt, it would have shut down the whole production for weeks until the star was ready. 😊
Yuen Wah was one of the 7 Little Fortunes with Jackie, Sammo and Biao. He was known as the most acrobatic of them all, including Biao, who was pretty damn good.
I read where Bruce was so inspired by people like yuen wah, samo hung that, after or during filming of ETD, he said that he wanted to next learn Acrobatics
I think Yuen Wah 😭 played Wong Insik (the Japanese fighter ) where when Bruce did the round house kick he flipped over like a kart wheel. After Bruce defeated Bob Wall Wong Insik kicked Tony 4 times and turned and said “are you Tung Long”?
I understand that he was feeling lots of pain when that scene came, so had his stunt double did it because Bruce was back problems takes over Yuen wah was always there to fill the space, respect to the man.
All great actors need a stunt double. Im sure Bruce could have done it, with practice..but why risk it, right. Enter the dragon is a brilliant film, but Way of the dragon is my favourite film from Lee's portfolio 👍🏻💯 cheers mate.

Bruce was a great fighter but he was no acrobat, in truth he could probably have done many of the flips himself but at this stage of his career he had sustained a crippling back injury & from an insurance perspective, it was probably better to allow Yuen Wah to do the flips.

Bruce was flexible & there are plenty of pics of Bruce using a trampoline, so I don't doubt he could have done some of these tricks, but why not use Yuen Wah? It worked.

You said it Stipey,, Yuen Wah is a legend in his own right! I learned quite a while ago that Bruce had a double for the flip and kick to O’Hara’s face in Enter The Dragon and I was fine with it. It’s a great moment of Mr. Lee’s excellent and exciting fight choreography. I have seen legit photos of Bruce Lee doing handstands. In the moment of the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar fight in Game of Death when he is lifting himself off the ground to strike him,or in fights where he is doing a forward roll in Fist of Fury or Longstreet, I have no doubt about his gymnastics skills as part of his training. I agree his back problems may have limited his mobility for the on screen flips, but it’s all good.
I've seen the movie enter the dragon Over twenty five times when I was young. And it took 40 years to learn that that was Jackie Chan's neck That Bruce Lee snapped. Unbelievable

Yuen Wah I met him in h.k. very friendly I just shook hands with him. I have a photo of him and me.

Another know fact about one of my hero’s ✨thanks 4 that . I did now that one😊 ..i stopt practising kung fu long time ago but i am still a martial artist in my heart . Ofcourse like anyone else growing up in martial arts my hero was Bruce Lee and later Brandon as well. I remember when I was a lad I had a Kung Fu monthly poster on my wall of that blackflip against Bob Wall. I dont know why, but even then I had a funny feeling about it. I used to look at Bruces upside down head and think " It doesn't look like Bruce but its got to be Bruce". So when I found out the truth years later it didn't come as a surprise to me. I think it was said that Jackie Chan did the " Human Fly" wall climb in ' Enter The Dragon' too. But it always looks like Bruce to me. Bruce obviously had a lot admiration for Yeun Wah, as he allowed him to be filmed / photographed showing the various flips again on the set of ETD. A great stunt man. It doesn't take anything away from Bruce Lee. Every top action star past and present has used a body double for safety and insurance reosons.
I heard Jackie did the Human Fly scene, but I couldn't confirm or deny the fact (I'd like to find out though)

I used to buy KF monthly when I was still at school. Got up to about No.40 before I stopped and gave them to another fan. Wonder if they are collectable because I assume they ended publication years ago.
They are highly collectable and highly priced . The magazine ran till issue 79. It made its owner one of the richest men in the uk.

I was always under the assumption that it was Yuen Biao who did the flips and fight at the beginning with Sammo, and Yuen Wah who did the fights after, as well as Wah doubling for Han (Shik Ken) during the final fight with Bruce
Lam Ching Ying was the double for Han.

I know Yuen Biao, did some flips & stunts on Game of Death 78 version, but I think that's it. He was in Enter the Dragon but I don't think he did any flips for Bruce in ETD.

First I always want to give u a big thanks ans shout out to u cuz u really not is a BL fan but u give deep information that I never knew about his movies or the man himself. I know one day in the future we will see the entire movie of ETD where nothing is cut out and the whole version we never seen is now there and GOD also. I mean there will be more scenes before his death that he managed to put in. I remember liking Beerdy but all I seen of him is the same scenes or quotes but he always before his videos he gives details about what is showing and we see the same BS and that is why I stopped watching him cuz I never seen u before honestly until u did one about ETD and that made me from day one watch u each time and I never miss what u tell and that is why I say to u also I hope u are doing well and hope u keep doing what u do and I know one day u will give more details and again u will be right and u keep doing what u do and I will always be watching.

In One of the Four Bruce Lee's Fighting Method Books , they show him in a picture on a trampoline with Dumb Bells , there was just one picture if i remember correctly ?

Contrary to popular belief, Bruce Lee could not perform acrobatics or the splits or anything like that, but he was unbelievably technical and his speed and reflexes were unmatched
Wow I had to learn this information 51 years after the movie released.
Bruce use to do gymnastics. Linda and Bruce was actually both interested in it. And there are earlier videos and pictures of him doing cartwheels as a child and as an adult doing one handed handstands. However, it’s true Bruce later on couldn’t do backflips and summersaults. Due to a severe back injury, which would plague him for the rest of his life.
I remember being surprised and a little disappointed when I found out that Bruce used a stunt double for the acrobatic scenes.
But knowing Bruce's history as a martial artist in real life it made sense.
Gymnastics wasn't incorporated into his
Jeet Kun Do and Bruce never demonstrated that ability in his youth before the back energy.
But because of Bruce's philosophy of absorbing what's useful and rejecting what's useless, there's no doubt that he eventually would have learned gymnastics like he learned judo from Gene LeBell and the nunchucks from Dan Inosanto.
He was constantly evolving.
Yuen Wah was Bruce Lee’s stunt double back then. The directors in Hollywood did not want Bruce to cause an injury to himself. Near the end where we can see Brice kick all the guys, Bruce had injury cause from having to kick and stop his kicks to stop injury to the cast. What you said about the fip and other things, very true.
Bruce injured his back but there are photos of Bruce doing the V sit in his G.O.D film photo. His back was in pain, but he worked and exercised to strength the muscles to his lower back. Bruce was able to somersault, but Warner Bro wanted to play safe.
Yuen Wah did all the flips. Also of muscle control and accuracy can be seen Bruce’s kicks in Enter the Dragon near the end fight scenes. This goes to show, Bruce injury is not a lie, but from his kicks, this also demonstrates he could still had the ability to do flips. May be not consistently, but at least once or twice.

Wow. Out of all the stunt doubles I've caught in movies on purpose or by accident, I never once even considered Bruce using one. I'm beyond shocked but I guess I shouldn't be. After you mentioned it I did know he had injured his back doing Good mornings. Thanks for the video.

Nice video, Stripey, though I don't get the impression he'd ask for it Yuen Wah deserves more acknowledgement for his amazing work as Bruce Lee's double, Yuen was obviously an incredible acrobat. It's also impressive how long & varied film a career Yuen Wah has had & continues to have beyond his career as a stuntman, the last movie I remember seeing him in was Marvel's Shang Chi movie, how many of the other Hong Kong stuntmen have had success acting in Hollywood productions as well as Hong Kong movies? Not too many!

The fact that the transition from Bruce to stuntman ,to Bruce is seamless,and considering the budget was not that high and you compare this to the multi million James bond productions from the 70s to 80s where you can easily see Roger mores stunt double ,also film footage when traveling in the car

Yuen wah is an amazing man, acrobat, stunt double for Bruce Lee, in fact he was also in "Game of death when Tung lung - Kim Thai Jung (Bruceexplotatiin), fights Bob wall in the changing rooms, the flip over the wooden seats, that was Yuen wah, those wooden seats then Bob wall puts his fists through. Thanks for the video. I think in fist of fury Yuen wah might have doubled Bruce when he flipped over that phone, and you hear it ring, when he fights that chap with Katana sword. :)
For fans of Bruce Lee' talent, it's an interesting piece of information, but we all know that it doesn't change anything on Bruce. He was one of them, who didn't have to be an acrobat to prove anything. Of course in the movies, just to catch a viewer's eyes it might be desired. There's a story about Yuen Wah from Jackie Chan's book "I am Jackie Chan" which showed just how much of an amazing gymnast he was and still is. In the story, Jackie and his fellow Beijing Opera students are forced to do handstands for hours by their teacher. The teacher then yelled break and all the students crumbled to the floor except Wah. The other students crawled over to him and found he had fallen asleep WHILE STILL DOING A PERFECT HANDSTAND! 😮
The opera training they received was brutal. But it turned them all pretty much into stars. I might watch ‘painted faces’ tonight. Great movie. Obviously the film didn’t show the whole truth with good reason.

Common knowledge to a lot of us, but I've seen some people online refuse to believe it and even get offended. Silly really as it takes nothing away from Bruce Lee as a martial artist.
I think Bruce Lee did a backflip in that Ironside episode he was in though.
As for Yuen Wah in Way of the dragon, I doubt it. IMDb also credit Bob Baker as "Thug" in WOTD, but I've never seen him, have you?

No Bob Baker isn't in WOTD, I think the IMDB should work on getting it right.

Bruce started out doing his own stunts, but this was after his back injury. I think that he could have done it, but he felt that if he landed the wrong way, then it might cause more damage later.

It is good that people in the west know this now. This is why if you watch Stephen Chow’s movie ‘The legend of the dragon’ - many references are made about Yuen Wah being Bruce Lee’s stunt double is throughout the movie. Something which is common knowledge in HK. Yuen Wah and Lam Ching Ying were the ones who Bruce lee promised to bring over to America to make movies once his production company was established…..which didn’t come into fruition.
Great video ! Regarding Yuen Wah and Way of the Dragon 🐉 Actors can take credid for Working on a Movie and not appear in the final production nor is their name in the credits ! At a 1990's Bruce Lee Convention in London were the 2 Guests were John Saxon and Bob Baker ( Bakers only ever Interview) He states as well as appearing in Fist of Fury playing the Russian ! He also worked with Bruce on Way of the Dragon 🐉 playing a Villain in an uncredited role ! although you can't point him out in the finished production ( hope that helps ) 👍
