  • Today we take a look at Corby Fire Station, 20 Lloyds Rd, Corby NN17 1AP.
The Northamptonshire Fire And Rescue Service Aerial Rescue Pump was out on full display so we decided to make a little video.
We look all around it and speak to a Crew Manager about the cameras and issues that firefighters face including bad parking.
    Enjoy!

Some years ago I was talking to a Norwich fire fighter, he was the driver and they were responding to a house fire with persons reported. When they arrived it was a cul-de-sac heavily congested with cars parked on both sides. The house on fire was at the end of the cul-de-sac and a neighbour reported there were 5 children in the house. The sub officer said go for it and they rammed 8 cars out of the way. All 5 children and their mother were rescued safely but suffering from smoke inhalation. The rest was left to the insurers.

I've dropped computers off at a colleague's house in a cul-de-sac like that before, with literally an inch on either side of my car as cars were on both sides (they were parked half on the kerbs as well). Imagine a fire-engine trying to get up there, and you would also have to pull them out as pushing them in would possibly block the last houses from the engine (although I imagine they have long hoses, or I hope they have).

The MAN pod carriers are part of the new dimension fleet, they are mainly 54 reg. They were government owned and distributed to the fire services to increase national resilience in the event of a major incident and can be deployed anywhere in the country. There is a variety of pods including large demountable pumps, hose layers, hazchem, heavy rescue and other specialist kit. They have now been handed over to the various fire services who have to maintain and crew them.

Merseyside had an 08 reg combined aerial pump, it was an absolute lemon. It took a full year of modifications to enable it to pass the tilt test. It went on the run at Bromborough Wirral as the second turn. Shortly after it was moved to the workshops in Liverpool and then quietly disposed of. Another lemon was the Mercedes light pump, it was found to be so heavy when fully loaded that it made the steering wallow alarmingly. It was quickly sold to Cheshire where it was converted to a fast response motorway rescue unit.

A lot of this is caused by shoppers especially at Xmas due to a range, smyths toys, sports direct pets at home, food ware House, next and sainsburys causing congestion and now they're building an aldi. We are expecting loss of life before it gets addressed.

In response to ppl having to park half on a curb and half on the road, where I live the streets are too narrow to solely park on the roads, otherwise if they were completely on the road there wouldn't be any room for any vehicle to travel down. And it's not a case of having to walk a further distance to your car to park it properly somewhere far away from where you live, it's the security of being able to see your vehicle at all times from inside your own house.
