  • It’s hard to send an entire country into an identity crisis, but one single Tweet managed to do just that-and all under 150 characters. When Sweden’s official Twitter account claimed that Swedish meatballs may in fact actually be Turkish, Swedes around the world were set into outrage. How could such a beloved touchstone of Swedish cultural history all be a sham? To get to the bottom of it all, we enlisted the help of an expert. Come along as we try to unlock the great meatball mystery.

There is actually a recipe book from 1695, 14 years before Charles XII's stay in what is now Moldova, that mentions a form of boiled ball of meat called "frikadeller". I think the only inspiration he might have gotten is to cook them in a pan, but I think people did that before. But us Swedes know that the clasdic dish named "kåldolmar" is actually taken from "dolma", I think they are called that. And I might be wrong, but I think I heard that he took home the practice of building houses out of bricks, and only the rich could afford it, so the others painted their houses red so it would look like bricks. Have a nice day. :-)

As a Swede, I know that our Swedish meatballs are very well known, but I know that there are so many different variations of the meatballs in other countries and we were not the first with them 😀 You take what you have and like and make your own thing out of it. That's how we learn about things. Because you often use what you have. I live much further down in Sweden but I know they use a lot of Reindeer meat high up in Sweden. But where I live it's not as common. It's fun when you can make different variations of it. for example, use different meats and flavors.

It makes sense though - no one knows meatballs like the Italians and Turkey is right by Italy, so it isn't too hard to imagine that there was a wave of meatball-know-how that made its way out of the Ottoman empire and somehow leapt over most of Europe but exploded in Sweden. The rest of Europe does sausages, not balls of meat.

Turkish köfte can mean a lot of things. Some are flat, some are round, some are spit roasted, some are fried in a pan. But they never include pork, like traditional Swedish meatballs always do. There are similarities between Turkish and Swedish cooking indeed, but they have nothing to do with the fact that King Charles XII of Sweden failed at Poltava and afterwards spent quite a time in Turkey trying hard to make Ottoman forces join in on his project.

Pasta originates from asia and thier noodles, italians stole it and made thier own version. Except that thier version is the same thing as the original, just other shapes and names.
Same with meatballs, there is italian meatballs and swedish meatballs.

I don't know man. When I asked them if they're really swedish, they just sat there being tasty and warm. Not that I don't like it, but it's just embarrassing to get ignored by meatballs like that.
