    One thing I'd like to say about Dutch coffee drinking habits is that most people prefer regular coffee. Actually (speaking as a barrista) espresso is mostly ordered after dinner and an "Americano" is espresso with added hot water. In general though, home-made coffee is paper filtered or French pressed instead of from a machine. And it's preferably served in delicate china and always served with a tiny spoon, even if you don't want any cream or sugar. It's a habit of stirring it while talking to the other people at the table. If you want to be really fancy, you can serve it in gold-rimmed hand-painted fine china, at least that's how I grew up. Hopefully this adds to your knowledge. Love your videos and your positive take on exploring cultural differences!

    I've lived in America for a total of three years, we visit my wives family every year for a good two months. What do we have to bring? Dutch coffee (and Chocomel en stroopwafels of course) Not just for the family, but for ourselves as well because I could never stand the artificial tasting American coffee, and my wife can't stand it anymore after getting used to tasty Dutch coffee.
    "Senseo" isn't really coffee. I mean it is, but artificial in taste and unlike in America they don't try to hide that taste with a marketing gimmick of "roasting it really dark" giving you the impression that the coffee is really strong. Strong coffee is coffee with a lot of caffeine in it, not with a strong taste. ;-)

I went to media mart (best buy equivalent) and they had a bunch of different expresso machine. In best buy you mostly see a few option.

I personally don't like coffee at all, bit my mom and brother are big fans, so the bigger the cup the better. With grinded coffee you can decide yourself how strong you want to make the taste and you can buy different kinds of grinded beans. Just a tip ;)

    In every work place, office or factory, there is a coffee machine and there will be a major uprising if this machine is removed. Before and during the working hours the workers can drink a free cup of coffee, which sometimes is horrible tasting, but sometimes real good, and hé it is free :) At 10h and at 15h a special break is normal at most work to drink and chat with your colleageus which is very productive because then the best ideas are produced between otherwise seperated departments. Sometimes managers see this as unproductive and try to abolish this, but my experience is that after some time it grows back.

    There are webshops where you can buy good quality coffeebeans, and there is a variety of dark roasted coffeebeans, although there are not cheap. I am actually the opposite. for me the strength of the coffee doesn't matter whether its roasted darkly or not it's usually based on the extraction. For me, the issue in the Netherlands is that they almost exclusively sell medium to dark roast coffee. I like light roast cause its more nuanced and doesn't hide the flavor. Dark roast is practically caramel or chocolate only.

    Coffee here is about quality over quantity nowadays. But it used to be more like in The States. Just a bigger cup with something brown in it that, to most of us nowadays, tastes like how we call it ""canalwater". Just a watery version of what we now get. I think in Europe we are at least love to think that we live and we take our time to enjoy where as it seems that in the US it is about rushing from one moment to another without actually enjoying those moments. But that is a generalised view, bit blak and white but that I think is our Dutch perception.Most people I know who drink ar Starbucks just think it is not good quality at all. Me being Portugese with probably the best espresso's in the world really do not get why there is a Starbucks in Lisbon in the first place...Probably for the tourists but it is just very low grade, bad quality to us. Dutch coffee from our perspective is better and it is a Dutch as Spaghetti is: it is mainly Italian and based on an Italian wayt to make coffee. But that as an aside.

  • @Lily_and_River
    @Lily_and_River Před 5 lety

    Most Dutch people drink a lot of coffee during the day. I think tea is getting more popular because it's healthier (when it's not black that is). We also have the expression: we're going to drink coffee/let's drink coffee, when we just mean it's time to sit together and have a drink. But usually 9/10 people will want coffee, trust me. When I lived in England it was the other way around and most people would choose tea of course and this was really notable to me as a Dutch person.
    Also I think we have the biggest cup of coffee in Europe. I'm not sure about Scandanavia but in a lot of other European countries you'll need to order 'an Americano' to get a Dutch amount. If you order 'coffee' you'll get an espresso. So thought it was kind of funny that you think we drink less and also drink smaller volumes 'cause we probably drink the most coffee of all European countries and larger volumes aswell.

    • @Lily_and_River
      @Lily_and_River Před 5 lety

      Oh and a lot of people have just an old fashioned coffee machine at home so you can decide on the ratio coffee and water yourself. I must admit I have a nespresso machine, I think it's fine. But a lot of Dutch people know the difference between an 'ok' cup of coffee and a 'good' cup of coffee which is made by a real coffee machine with real beans. I think the bean flavor is actually the biggest difference. It can definitely be strong here aswell but we define a good cup of coffee more by the quality of the beans and the machine I think than how dark roasted it is.
      From the other comments I see that American coffee is more watery tasting to Dutch people although it might be dark roasted (and therefor you like it). So I think you should try a dark roasted Dutch coffee (not from starbucks) to really be able to compare the taste.

    Loved coffee in the US but not the diner Wendy type of coffee, that’s way to watery (does this make any sense). Starbucks with added espresso shots are a treat though.
    Nice to follow you Joey, and nice to know you’ll aaaallllways love me 😉 LOL
    Maybe nice to explore the difference from living in a city Centre in the USA or Netherlands and same for living in the country. They’re all so different

    Why don't you enjoy your coffee???? That is why you sit down, to enjoy it, if you walk around you're not focussed on what you're drinking so that's why we sit down. Coffee is precious, we learned that in world war II so that's why we sit down. It's not something common, it's a treat.

    Coffee is a staple 'food' for me, on average 12 mugs per day. Favourite brand Lidl espresso, I buy only buy the beans and grind them, that way I can vary the strength as I see fit. Consumption is around 1.5 kg per month for me alone...

      Joey Jaq normally I make my coffee per 4 i.e. per two mugs. A Krupps coffee maker or an Silly machine. Just the then is the coffee ultra fine grind. Oh before I forget, Lidl sells the same coffee per 500gr no need for a grinder. Though I don't know about how fine the grind is.

Yes and Starbucks is not roasted coffee, it is burnt 100%. Oh and a request: bring back this crazy Dutch girl friend from the beginning. Just for once. She was fun.

    coffee culture is on the decline here, thanks to the god awful senseo/nespresso contraptions (real coffee does not have a frothy layer, ugh) really don't care for starbucks either, the whole atmosphere in those places makes my skin crawl, and then the ordering in those places... It's my addiction to caffeine that occasionally gets me in there but I've said more then once to the nice barista girl "honey I just want some straight up black coffee to wake me up, keep the sales pitch for the lady behind me with the unicorn hair." it could be that my experience of these places is a bit skewed, I'm only there when I desperately need some coffee, god knows I turn into a bitch when I'm that desperate.
    I need my shot of caffeine before I hit the shower, and another when I get out of the shower. My coffee maker is like a family member, and the only one I'm actually glad to see in the morning.
    god I really am a bitch, Don't drive a car though.

And if coffee is a beverage to enjoy, sit down and ENJOY your coffee; concentrate on your drink in stead off running around without the pleasure of enjoying your drink. If it is liquid you need.......take water. Learn about coffee and stop using that very, very POOR Starbucks drinks. As far as I'm concerned, Starbucks doesn't even rate as mediocre.
