  • Another Practice session for you guys. A collection of sides step Jingle Dress songs to help you end the Pow Wow session strong! This playlist of Side Steps songs gives you a practice Session of about a half hour.
    This is also the 2nd Volume in the series I'm creating for Jingle Dress Dancers. I hope you like the vids. The clips are from Ft Washakie, Rocky Boy and Hunting Moon.

      Good question - I think the reference is for the bells on the dancers, is that correct?
      Couple of popular stories out there. The one I hear (that probably the most common) from elders is the practice of Fort Soldier leaders putting bells on all the Native Warriors.
      That made sure the imprisoned Natives could never sneak up the soldiers.
      Dances were still done and the bells just became habit. It does help with Rhythm 🥁 but it started when Indigenous people were shackled with the bell attached.
      Hopefully that helps.

      If you’re asking specifically the jingles on our dresses, they aren’t bells. At one point, they were rolled tin snuff lids. I know a few dancers that still use and roll snuff lids for their dresses. Now there are several vendors that makes our cones specifically for jingle dresses. :)
