    If a student can submit a perfect portfolio why would they need to get into a school? What then does the school have to offer them? I really enjoy watching these critiques. I learn a lot, a small bit of which is just someone else's opinion. When I see the crap being sold on the internet it is obvious that there are millions of people who find attractive things that I see as crap. They make money.......

      The idea behind submitting a portfolio is show evidence that you have sufficient skill to be able to take more advanced and rigorous courses at the college level. Colleges do not expect a "perfect" portfolio, in fact there is no such thing as "perfect" portfolio because visual arts is subjective, there is no right or wrong. Art school has plenty to offer, even for very accomplished students; I know for me I learned so much about how to look at my work with a critical eye, and I learned about tons of different techniques, approaches, and art supplies that I had no idea even existed when I was in high school. Also, being part of a strong artistic community with accomplished faculty and driven students is generally an environment that most students have not experienced when they are in high school.

    I'm a highschool freshman and can barely draw. I think I can improve but I fear I won't improve to the levels required to get into a good school. Tyler School of Art sounds cool but I still don't even know if art is for me and what I want to do for my life. I'm just nervous and I guess that shows through in my art.

    • @artprof
      @artprof  Před 7 lety +6

      I think the best way to find out if art is what you want to do is to just try it! Take an art class at school, or at a local art center if you can. There's no way to know until you actually start doing it. This article I wrote has some suggestions for how to get started: claralieu.wordpress.com/2013/12/19/ask-the-art-professor-where-do-i-start/

      Also, a big part of improving is just putting in the hours and practicing. Drawing is a lot like athletics, it needs to be practiced on a daily basis and you really have to put in the time. Here's an article I wrote about how to practice drawing: claralieu.wordpress.com/2013/04/19/ask-the-art-professor-what-is-the-best-way-to-practice-my-drawing-skills/

    great attention to detail

    do admission officers go through this much detail for every portfolio?

    • @artprof
      @artprof  Před 7 lety +7

      Hi Lisa, I'm assuming you mean if you meet with an Admissions officer in person at a National Portfolio Day event? If yes, the answer is that they will not go into this much detail. Usually at a Portfolio Day event you'll get a out 5-10 minutes with a reviewer, depending on the reviewer and how long the line is.

    My only criticism for the triptic is that the man on the left artwork is a bit off with the pink lips as in the middle artwork the man doesn’t have any lips and the other male in the left piece doesn’t have any lips Other than that i think you got it all 10:45

    Hi! im a highschool student getting ready for my first national portfolio day, and I was wondering, what should be the bare minimum i should bring for my portfolio?

    • @artprof
      @artprof  Před 7 lety +4

      I would bring as much artwork as you have, it doesn't hurt to have too much, and you can also choose to show less if you feel after your first review that brought too much! I think it's still worth it to go, even if you only have 5 pieces to show. I recommend to high school students to attend junior year just to get a feel for things and then to go again senior year when you are more experienced and prepared. Here are more recommendations I have for attending portfolio day, as well as preparing a portfolio: claralieu.wordpress.com/2013/03/19/ask-the-art-professor-what-should-you-include-in-an-art-portfolio-for-art-school-or-college/

    nice explanation of the critic to be dependant from the master client. this work has some compositional goods but a horrible analysis made by scrape's of general visual knowledge.Boring symbolic clichés, empty whites,comfused grey and dull blacks.A routine of talent as exeptional blah blah...
