a matter of paying the extra cash for a machine to hunt down your out-of-tune string for you, instead of listening for it with your own ear.
i say learn to sing true harmony (such as doo-wop or any a capella/unaccompanied gospel - the point is to avoid the piano or other equal temperament at all costs here!) and you will instantly know which strings are out of tune.

Great vid, although I'd recommend a delay over a reverb any day. The M5 is awesome. Auto save, presets, full midi control, additional noise gate per preset, expression control, small, solid, 100+ fx, cheap. I can't recommend it enough. I use a zoom MS70 cdr for delay reverb Swiss army stuff too.

I'd recommend both really. I use a separate power supply for the zoom so it sounds OK. The M5 got a bad rep because they sold it with a weak power supply and it kept cutting out. Later models are fine though.

The Boss MS-3 does the job of nearly every pedal on your board, including the gig rig for only $400. It has 3 loops to either add your favorite pedals, and/or control your amp via the 4 cable method. I have 3 pedals before it as those are always at the front of my chain. In my loops, I have my favorite OD pedal, my Mooer amplifier profile pedal, and a DD-3 for added psychedelic textures. All of my other effects, modulations, compression, delays, reverbs, harmonies, etc. are all in the MS-3. Begins with my Morely optical volume, then my Boss PS-5 Super Shifter, then my Morely Maverick Mini Wah. After the MS-3 I have the T.C. Electronic Ditto going into a Mooer Mini DI with speaker simulation to run direct. Since I've got the XVive wireless system, I only have 2 cables coming from my board, Power and XLR to the board. Although, I can also run a 1/4" to a power amp in on an amplifier should the venue have insufficient monitoring.

There are many ways to get your personal tone, and many brands, and the only thing in common between his rig and mine is the vintage re-issue late 50s style Les Paul and the HOF reverb, but ultimately, his classic rock tone (AC/DC in particular) is absolutely spot on. Quite excellent, and very cranked Marshall-esque, so give the man his fair due.And the only pedal on his board that is not super common is the Empress delay.

For starters, I'm mainly into classis rock and bluesy stuff, but love a wide variety, stopping short of metal,
Tuner, compressor, a few drives, Hall of Fame 2, M5.... then over time add flashback 2, maybe phaser/flanger/chorus, etc..as needed...and an RC300 ...???
But I think the M5 can serve the purpose for now of Delay/phaser/flanger/chorus...so I'm able to play around with lots of sounds as I build up a board...and will just he a handy tool to have in general...
Am I on the right track?
I cant decide which drives...my short list has the TS mini, MojoMojo, Crayon, Soul Food, and possibly a Spark Mini boost... any suggestion on which 2-3 of those to get?
Will a Flashback 2 serve as a good delay, or will I want a good analog delay like Carbon Copy?
Thanks for the video, I think I'm now sold on starting with the M5 for my first pedal instead of getting a tuner and first drive pedal for now....
Any advice would be most appreciated!

Hey, I have a question... I have the m5 and that same expression pedal... I have different problems between them... first of all, eventhought I save presets, when I turn it off and on again, those parameters I set for the expression pedal aren't recalled perfectly... also... say I do for example a whammy with the pitch effect... 0 in heel position, 24 in toe position... sometimes when i move the pedal it might not go back to that value perfectly... like it might go to -0.1 or 23.9... have you had any issues like that?

I play mostly single coils and although it may not be a full-on humbucker, I just put a single coil sized dual rail in the bridge and it seems to do alright with my TS-9 clone (modtone dyno drive). I run that before my dirt and use it mostly (I suppose) like a treble booster. Maybe that's why it seems to sound fine with the added output from the bridge pickup? Right now my dirt is Dyno Drive (TS9)>Boss SD-1>Boss DS-1. Not very impressed with the SD-1 as a solo boost (could be my amp's 'flavor'). The Dyno Drive is an always on pedal for me.

It's amazing how many pedals (and patch cables) get sold so that a player can make that Marshall sound. And then there's always that omnipresent thought, if you want to sound like a Marshall, then, get a Marshall. Here we are, 50 years later, and the whole guitar market is still simply obsessed with it.

Right now I am using Guitar Rig 5 on my computer and guitar and this does a great job showing me what various FX do like distortion, chorus, reverb, etc. I realized that to play rock songs that sound good, you need either these on computer or pedals.

It depends on what you need. There’s not a right pedal to get, there is what is right for you. If you like the OverDrive of your amp and guitar, then you probably would not need an overdrive pedal which is usually the first. I would get a multi-effects pedal like the Line 6 M5.

Hi Sage, could you do an episode about multi-effects pedals please? I have a Boss me-70 and i am curious about how they are made. Are they the same as Boss pedals? Eg is the chorus effect on the me-70 or me-80 the exact same electronics found in one of the Boss chorus pedals or is the sound achieved differently? Many thanks. Cheers.

      Hi Sage,
Yes lots of product demos but noone has done a comparison individual pedals vs multi effects board. Be great if you did one. Thanks for replying.

I have a question .... I’m going to make a petal board and I’m wondering if the following is enough .....
    •Distortion
    •Overdrive
    •Chorus
    •Boost petal
    •Looper
    •Noise Gate
    •Wah petal
    •Volume Petal

    Erich,
What is the best portable affordable pedalboard and power supply that you can recommend on a budget that can manage 5-10 pedals? I am thinking of a Line 6 M13 or Line 6 Pod plus 5-6 pedals for a future setup.

    • @yourguitarsage
      @yourguitarsage  Před 6 lety +1

For the price, nothing can beat the M13. I have one.

thanks and I agree I tried the cheaper M9 and loved it except the distortion/fuzz effects are weak but just get M13 and distortion/fuzz pedal and backup M9 in case the M13 fails on a gig and for triple backup the $100 Pod unit to clip on belt. All the same as 50 pedals for 1/10 the cost and space.

Agree Sweetwater has them on sale now for under $400. I think this plus an Eventide H9 would be the perfect setup with a fuzz/overdrive dirt pedal.

I'm sure I'm late chiming in, but for around $50.00 you can get a Donner DB-2 power supply off Amazon. While you're there check out their boards. Both the Donner and Mr.Power offerings are affordable and fair quality.

Right now, I'm playing an Epiphone Wildkat into (in order) a Boss RC-1 -> Boss DD-3 -> Boss CE-5 -> Electro-Harmonix Little Big Muff -> Dunlop Cry Baby into my (1970s?) 120watt Peavey 2x12 Classic Combo amp (minus the original 3-4 way foot switch.
I'm trying to get my hands on a cleaner amp for more ambient sounds but still capable of some overdrive and fuzz.
I actually have a Polytune 2 Mini on the way. I'm thinking of getting the Friedman BE-OD overdrive, Xotic EP Booster Mini, the same Volume pedal you have, the Walrus Audio Vanguard Dual Phaser or the KMA Astrospurt phaser, the Keeley Caverns V2 Delay/Reverb and possibly a different fuzz...possibly... (I think I need to do some soldering on or replace my patch cables and get a power supply)..
I've been looking at the Electro-Harmonix Silencer and since I'm playing atmospheric/post-rock/classical all the way to Hawkwind-like progressive, doomy, space rock stuff.
I think my Wildkat needs some surgery as well.
I'm so used to overall size, shape, and neck length that playing a Strat felt weird but that's more dynamic than anything like my Wildkat.
I'm thinking of the G&L Fallout and adding a Bigsby.
I'm fairly new to understanding the electronics of it all. I just want diversity without selling everything I own but liking what I'm looking at while playing.
I may actually get a Ditto looper to add to my board possibly for my MicroKORG so I don't miss guitar parts before or after jumping to my synth..
I plan to eventually have a board specifically for my guitar along with delay for vocals and viola/cello when that time comes..possibly an extra looper like I mentioned earlier.
For my rig as of now..
What do you think I should go for?
I know it's preference like you said but I'm not trying to have a huge pedal setup and I'd like to continue playing my Wildkat if I can find a cleaner amp like a Vox or possibly a Fender so I don't get so much feedback when playing through overdrive or fuzz.
I play a variety of stuff but stick to psychedelic/atmospheric tones for the most part.
I've been thinking about a lot of pedals and if I should entirely replace what's on my board now.
I'm broke most of the time, I play too many instruments and I only have two arms.
I'm super picky about what my set up consists of.
Any recommendations for the phasers, overdrive, reducing feedback from the Wildkat? I would post a picture of my set up if I could. I know it's mostly about preference but I'm trying figure out what order I should plug everything in that's most beneficial.

      @yourguitarsage  Před 6 lety

The line 6 M5 for a Phazer and everything else. The fulltone OCD for overdrive. Step away from your speakers to reduce feedback. You really should not be getting more than just a minimal amount.
