  • Walking in Jane Austen’s footsteps - A walking tour from the village of Steventon in Hampshire, where Jane was born, to the nearby villages of Ashe and Deane. Jane Austen spent the first 25 years of her life in Steventon. We also visit the site of the Old Rectory where the Austens lived and where Jane was born. My film takes you on a relaxing tour through some beautiful countryside visiting places that Jane would have known and inspired her writing. I have also included some interesting facts about Jane Austen, her family and the area in the subtitles.
    Jane
Jane Austen is one of England’s greatest writers, her novels are appreciated around the world and frequently adapted for film and tv. Jane was born here in Steventon in Hampshire in 1775. She was the daughter of a rector and one of 8 children. Jane wrote many of her popular novels while living in Steventon.
    Tour
We start by taking a brief look around St Nicholas church in Steventon, where Jane’s father George Austen was rector and where Jane and her family regularly worshipped. We walk through the village of Steventon, passing the village green, where the villagers gathered. We walk along paths and across some beautiful English countryside where Jane and her family would have walked as they would often walk a mile or two to visit their neighbours. In the village of Ashe we pass the old rectory where Jane visited Mrs Lefroy, her friend and mentor. This was also where she danced and flirted with Tom Lefroy at a ball held here. We also visit the village of Deane where Jane’s father was rector for several years and Jane’s dearest friend Martha Lloyd also lived there. We pass the impressive gothic All Saints Church and Deane House where Jane met Tom Lefroy for the first time at a ball held here. We visit the site of the Steventon rectory where Jane was born and Jane spent much of her first 25 years. We end our walk back at St Nicholas’ Church.
    Walk
The route is 6 miles approximately so allow 2-3 hours plus some time for stops. The route is flat with no hills. I provide a description of the route in the subtitles if you would like to walk this route. There is a small car park outside St Nicholas' church at SAT NAV RG25 3BE. You may wish to take food and drink with you as there are limited options.
Great Writers This film is part of a series of occasional films celebrating some of the great writers and showing the places connected to them that you can still visit today.
