Bogey teams: WHY even the best fear some opponents

  • Mighty Liverpool are left quaking in their boots by Crystal Palace. Even the best like Bayern Munich can’t stand Gladbach. Meanwhile, Real Madrid live in fear of Bayern. Argentina would be happy to never face Germany again. What are bogey teams? How do some clubs - even much smaller ones - sometimes embarrass bigger sides time and again? The bogey team phenomenon. What is your team's bogey team? Tell us in the comments...

    For Dortmund it is Bremen for sure. A few others (Hertha, Augsburg, the blues) can be thorns too, but we've a particularly bad record in the Pokal with Bremen. They've just knocked us out twice in a row too. I still had sympathy for them last year, but not now.
    For LAFC, it is Galaxy. The Carson crew always seemed to have our number regardless of form going into the Trafficos. It took a monumental effort to exorcize the demon at the end of last year, but then we were knocked out of MLS cup immediately afterwards.
    Bogeys are rough whether you're beaten or not.
    Edit: Poor Hamburg. They're not much threat in recent seasons.

    • @nextgen101
      @nextgen101 Před 4 lety +1

      @@dwkickoff I've thought about it before. For neutrals, If one team always wins with batterings it would become a joke. If one team always won with relatively safe and simple 1-0, 2-0 scores, it would become a snoozefest.
      Winning by one goal in games where both score is a closer game (edit: And in reality there were tons of goals in these meetings!), but you still need to have the extra context that goes with it to spice it up. This would be brought by the fans, the players, coach, anyone involved really.
      The narrative became the new kid in the city (aka "Chivas 2.0") trying to connect with the city, with help FROM the people to give the old king and his old empire, who has a lesser connection to the people (aka "Carson Galaxy"), a run for his money.
      Once the games finally came, there was the marketing wagon in full force and while this may seem way too plastic or manufactured of a rivalry to some, the context I mentioned earlier was brought after all when the time came. The first match set the tone for every following one. Vela's majesty vs. Zlatan's never say die mentality.
      We always lost in Carson ("YOU CAN'T BEAT US!") despite coming so close the first time of asking. We never lost at the Banc, but we also bottled our best chance when a designated player back-passed from the wing right into the feet of their striker who then scored the equalizer. Moments like these seem almost pulled from a storybook and ignite the whole thing for everyone.
      I would say that with the way each game played out up until now, it definitely was helpful for it to develop, for neutrals especially, and that it stoked the flames for the fans incredibly well. The back and forth was very justifiable. We'll have to see how it goes now that big Z has gone back to Milan.
      They've signed Chicharito (I feel in an attempt to ape us with the Mexican market personally) now, but he's a very different striker and person to Ibra. If we lose again, it'll be seen as us slipping back to the old way, even with Zlatan gone. A bad look for us anyways. If we win, we'll confirm that we kicked Z out of MLS and the Galaxy's paradoxical successes against us with him.
      Overall, we live for that flair for the dramatic feeling in football, so I wouldn't have it any other way. Maybe one or two less goals conceded to them haha.

    Even though the 1950 Maracanazo is perhaps the biggest ever hit on the brazilian side, Uruguay can't exactly be called a "bogey team" for Brazil. Brazil has won 36 games against them. Meanwhile, Uruguay has won 20. The last time Uruguay won, however, was in 2001. After that, Brazil has even applied elastic scores, like a 4x1 in 2017 and 4x0 in 2010.

    Uruguay as Brazil boogey team? That's wrong. Yes, Uruguay beat Brazil at the 1950 final and of course it's a ghost haning over the heads of many brazilians. But they have beaten Uruguay fairly consistent the last couple of decades.
    Brazil real boogey team is France. 1986 world cup they eliminated one of the best squad Brazil had on penalty kicks, the 1998 final when Brazil was completely sure they were gonna win, the 2006 world cup with Henry goal and Zidane just playing the hell out. Every time they face on WC later stages, the french seem to beat the brazilian side.

    As a supporter of the Portuguese National Team, I can say we had many bogey teams. For years, decades, we could not beat Germany, Italy, Spain, England, Brasil and especially France. But since Euro 2000, one by one, those bogeys have been falling. And now, after finally winning the Euro against France in Paris, it seems the bogey curse has been lifted and even reversed. Portugal has become one of the biggest bogey teams in Europe. England and Holland can't seem to beat us. Spain has lost their superiority complex against us. Germany and Italy now appear to show us respect on the pitch. Brasil no longer thinks of us as minnows and France knows they're no longer the team that can't be beaten. Portugal always seems to be drawn in the Group of Death. How do we get so lucky? The Portuguese Men of War are now the bogey team. Here's hoping this cycle goes on for decades more to come.
