Scrapping BP Tank Wagon

- A BP tank wagon seen here having its tank cut in half and lifted from its chassis by a Komatsu machines big grab at the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railways back yard . The chassis from the tank wagon was retrieved and will go to the Peterhead prison carriage project the sole surviving convict van (one of four built in 1915) is to be restored as part of the "Rocks, Rouges, Rails and Refuge" project to explore this aspect of social and transport heritage. Once completed the van, and associated displays will become part of the Maud Railway Museum, in Aberdeenshire..

That's a crying shame. Even if they needed the chassis they could have used the tank as a display piece or water tower. The railroad museum could have put that tank in the middle of a flower garden.
I spent 20 years as a torchman in a yard......now my torching hand can barely hold a coffee cup on a rainy day. But I DO miss chopping up interesting things. And the smwll of burnt steel. Cheers from Oshawa Canada.
These were built before "hearing protection", can you imagine being one of the riveters building one of these tanks?
At least they seemed to get smarter and use the machine to make sure the torch guy didn't learn how a field amputation worked. There were a couple minutes towards the beginning that had me thinking I've seen better safety practices in videos of Indian ship breaking yards...
I hate to see old stuff destroyed.. Especially when you could either give it to another museum or restore it.. How many more are there left in the world
Did anyone else notice that at 04:40, when the hot metal bracket fell, one of his cutting lines started "hissing around" like a snake. That's probably why he turned off the cutting gases.
Gordon302 : ....…and the torch flame goes out
Duh he dropped it on his hose. Its not hard to do also fun is catching in on fire
I find the vintage tank car of more interest than anything to do with prisoners. If it's too light when empty then use it as a water tender or diesel fuel storage. Just seems a shame.
bearbon2 you are epic
You don't want to have fuel in this rusty thing...
This beautiful tanker belongs in a museum and not on the scrap heap!
indeed
R. I. P tank car
The base would make a braw BBQ!
just love is ppe especialy the gloves !!
Thios man certainly cuts a nice straight line. Well done.
dangerous as hell
I've noticed they do some weird shit around that place
Please do cite some specific examples.
this just goes against what a preserved railways are, it should be restored and be used.
Tom Bore,do you have the resources, time, and money?
These rigid BP tank wagons have a tendency to derail when empty. Several came from BP Grangemouth. Siding space is a premium at Bo'ness.
Honda Driverer that justifying anything!
Seems like all you have to do is paint "BP" on anything and you have a disaster like the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico a couple of years ago.
why not fill with water, then it has weight
A good example of why nowadays the word 'preserved' means nothing.
spookywestie train
Parts have to come from somewhere. Note the chassis is being used for a restoration of a much more significant artifact.
Ooops! you cut the acetylene hose when the bracket dropped on it and it lit itself up at 4:43 when you shut down the torch.
A nightmare to many trains and railfaners
On the face of it , it seems a shame to destroy this wagon but it could well be that no one else wanted it and it was too rusted to be saved .
From the beginning Anybody that has done any kind of Flame Cutting could see that Those gas Hoses were going to get damaged sooner or later, Also Why place the Oxy pack and Propane Cylinder so close to the job, That end bracket could have fallen onto the Oxy Pack.
I knew not to do that shit before I was a first day welding student. That's some slack shit and makes more work for whoever has to splice or replace that hose.
Seems a shame
4:38 safe working practices.......holy jeebus! and 10:00
what was wrong at 10mins
No hard hats seen.
Not to mention the ten thousand times they are shooting sparks at the gas tanks
getting revenge
Good thing the fuel was emptied out.
Da blutet einem ja das Herz, wenn heute sowas noch zerstört wird. Und wenn man das Fahrwerk brauch für einen anderen Wagen, dann hätte man auch sicher den Kessel komplett absetzen und erhalten können.
Full DANGER D=
Why scrap it?
iantrack I agree, surely a buyer could have been found for it?
I mean, i would have happily bought it if i had the money. It was preserved for a reason, to give modern day people a glimpse into a time almost forgotten. Now no one will ever see that tanker again. :(
The noise of the shunter means something is broken or will be breaking quite soon.
een test thay will probaly scrap it as they dont seem to know what the word fix means somone needs to sort them out.
Have you ever volunteered at the BKR or have any knowledge of all the locomotives and rolling stock that have been brought back to life since the SRPS was founded in 1961?
Damn shame
Ouch! Doesn’t sit well with me…
Could have lifted the tank off without cutting it up. Also why was the twat cutting towards the gas bottles and not away from them.
I think that a lot of heritage railways need to do this kind of thing. There so much shite blocking up siding space that is rusting away, highly unlikely to be restored. Such as old wagons, bogies, coaches etc. At the end of the day scrapping the old bits like in this video raises more money for worth while projects
Shut your mouth
Bring your money then! Everyone wants SOMEONE ELSE to restore objects for them to look at. Anyone reading this is free to devote their life and income to advanced railfanning. Buy property with a rail spur and have at it. There are plenty of old trains but not plenty of well-off people interested in them.
Sadly there is some truth in this, of stuff rotting away
If only 1 in 100 of the experts on here actually left the keyboard and volunteered.....
Why scrap. 0:54
Thank you for your comment they needed the bogey & wheels for another project but even though I still hate seeing any railway stock being cut up
He is a danger to everyone this bloke on the cutting gear . he should not be aloud to operate a candyfloss machine he is dangerous
Nice work! I like the use of the gas axe! I could have watched it all day! However, I would suggest a shear to chop off the end parts. Hydraulic shears make it so much quicker! Chop-chop! All gone! I would like to see a steam locomotive being parted up!
Cockroach Get out of here with that nonsense! 2018 just started and you're already trolling.
Cockroach your trolling is no longer funny time after time you have no proof of your job just give up and get a life
He burst his pipes ,, amateur!!!
In opposition to ALL the negative "know it all" comments, there are many, many, many examples of riveted tank wagons preserved at loads of heritage lines. If it was rare, fair cop. But this one wasn't. STOP MOANING, RIVET COUNTERS!!!!
Lots of people seem to have a use for that knackered old tank! I wonder how many of you moaners would part with your cash!
I would stay 50 miles away if that explodes
