If You're Not Black, Don't Use the N-Word

  • My cousin’s teenage daughter, whom I affectionately call my niece, was recently hanging with some family friends her age when a boy in the group started using the N-word when speaking with another group member, like you would use the term “buddy”. Like us, the boy was South Asian, so my niece told him it wasn’t right for him to use the word. He disagreed, saying, “My Black friends don’t mind.”
Knowing that I teach about equity, diversity and inclusion for a living, the next time she saw me my niece inquisitively asked, “Is it ok for people who aren’t Black to use the N-word?” It took me less a millisecond to respond - "No!”
I’ve had enough of hearing paltry excuses and “explanations” from people about this. In the spirit of allyship and fighting against anti-Black racism, I want to use my voice to speak out about the use of the N-word.
In this #RituTalks video, I talk about how no one, other than someone who is Black, should use the N-word. It’s flat-out wrong. Why? I spell this out in my video!
If this feels unfair to you, I urge you to hear me out. Watch the video to learn the reasons why you shouldn’t use the N-word if you’re not Black.
    Watch now!

Black people are not allowed to wear socks and sandals then. Yes this is just as stupid as her argument in the video. No one should say the n-word.
It's still a slur and you can't change something that's racist into something meaning "homie or bro"
Not only that but it is still racist bc if a white person says it then it's racist but if a black person says it then it's not.
First of all, it's not equal, because that's exclusive towards other races.
Second of all, you can't take something that's a slur and make it a good thing.
Third of all, I understand the logic of you can't be racist to yourself and stuff like that but calling white people it, is dumb.
Fourth of all, anyone who thinks being racist of their race and saying it's a race privilege is dumb because that in itself is racist. Because it excludes other races.
A fifth of all, if one race can't say it then no one should because it's not equal to exclude other races from your race.
Sixth of all, it doesn't matter if a minority has been targeted by any hate or discrimination over time or now, that gives no right whatsoever for anyone to say something that's racist.
You can't disagree with something like this because it's fact over opinion right now.
What I am saying is pure sense.

No one should use the word black or not black. Anybody using that word just denotes the same meaning the meaning does not change no matter who uses it. And whoever uses it depends on the context of the usage to decide whether it is offensive or not. Black people calling each other the N-word casually or in any context just means that they are relating themselves to the supremacists that invented the word in the first place. And that they are looking down on the person that they are referring to with the N-word just as the inventors of the word did in the past. Words whether good or bad are not patented for use by particular people or community that's the worst racist thing to do of all. Using racial slurs amongst your community is like abusing your own forefathers. You need to see the context, if the context is not educational, or protest, or something productive or positive it's not fair to use it no matter whichever community is using the slur.

I'm white, and I've heard other white people complain that they can't use it to mean friend or brother the way some black people do. The thing I don't get, though, is that there are plenty of words in the English language to express friendship, so why would you want to use that particular word when you know that a black person is not going to hear, "My friend" if you call them that. Do these people have such a lack in vocabulary that they have to resort to that word? Note that I'm only referring to white people with this comment.

Would it be ok to at least inform black people that, given they can use the word freely (and non-blacks cant) it is entirely stupid to do so on a regular basis? The problem with the N-word came when rap music became mainstream and the music executives did nothing to address the indiscriminate use of the N-word. Unfortunately, most black kids from the inner city do not have role models to tell them not to use the word in everyday conversation around other races. When I was growing up in South Central Los Angeles in the 1970s, it was a term we used every day around each other.

So I wouldn't care how they feel when I said it right back to them. Why? Because if it's their word to use with one another, to one another, and don't want anyone else saying it, then they should do just that: use it with one another. This video does not fully explain why people who are non black shouldn't use the n word. For instance when a person has a black friend who is ok with them using it you make a good point in stating that one shouldn't freely use it outside of that relationship but you don't explain why they shouldn't use it inside of the relationship; you simply restate your premise that they shouldn't use it. At the end you mention who it is a word with a racist history, but you neglect to mention that it has a been used to regain power within the black community through art like hip hop and rap. Also, is it ok to use it in a historical film about slavery? It seems like not using it in such a film would merely portray a watered down version of history. There are many more questions to ask about this but I ask wonder if not using it gives it power? If we let it get so bad that we can't hear it without cringing then it certainly has power. There is more thinking to be done with this, I do not like how people state that we shouldn't use it and act as if they solved this social dilemma.
