    Purple CA is actually a pretty big deal. People say you can filter it in post, but really the purple covers up so much pixels, that there is no data behind it to show- it usually gets desaturated but the fringe is always there. In video you can't loose it at all. LOCA is a bit better since it's behind or in front of the subject and in the bokeh area so it can be eliminated by desaturating etc. But purple CA is terrible. Might as well get an f2 if it's a cleaner image and save the weight.

    I am planning to consider this lens over Sigma 16 and 30 as my first lens. But please let me know if Colour Fringing is really bad. I want it for Travel and Cinematic videos. Autofocus is acceptable though and that sound too. What is your opinion on this lens for Videos ??
    Will colour fringing will ruin my shots ??

    A comparison to the Zeiss 24mm 1.8 would be great . Not that they're in the same price universe, but ever so close in FOV.

    I am so curious whether the Tokina coming out soon will have more decent clicks on the aperture ring. Apart from that it seems to be quite identical to the Viltrox. Thanks for the review!

      @DaveMcKeegan  Před 3 lety +1

      It wouldn't surprise me, Tokina seem to generally mimic what Viltrox do given they are releasing a 23, 33 & 56 F1.4's - all unusual focal lengths and all identical to Viltrox (plus they also released a very similar 85mm f1.8 recently)
      I suspect Tokina and Viltrox are sharing optical designs and just creating their own body designs

    how would you compare it to a sigma or sony lenses on the same approximate pricerange?

    • @DaveMcKeegan
      @DaveMcKeegan  Před 3 lety +4

      Its a very different lens to those from Sony & Sigma - Sigma have the 16mm f1.4 & 30mm f1.4 which are quite different fields of view to this, similar to Sony, they have the 35mm f1.8 OSS which is even longer. I think the closest would be the Sony 28mm f2, but for aps-c I think the Viltrox is a better choice as the image quality is better and its a stop faster

    By the way, adding sample footage and stills does not relieve you of the obligation to have Rusty on, or at least near your desk while making this video. The Board is prepared to let it slide this time but don't let it happen again.

    The Fuji version is currently 65€ more expensive than e-mount on Amazon Germany, I believe manufacturers decided Fuji users get something equivalent to the good old Apple tax because they're more fancy... :P That difference brings it so much closer to Fuji's own glass that I don't consider it a real alternative anymore, while for the E-mount price it'd be a no-brainer.

      It's because, viltrox are the only one today that make autofocus lens for Fujifilm because Fujifilm didn't share their protocol until not far ago. When you are sony shooter, you will have sigma and tamron lens.
      Anyway on aliexpress you can find it quite cheap with dhl delivery.

    Why is there an aperture ring at all?

    • @DaveMcKeegan
      @DaveMcKeegan  Před 3 lety +2

      For those wanting to shoot video because it gives a smoother look as you stop down rather than sudden clicks
      All cine lenses are fitted with de-clicked manual aperture rings

    This lens looking cool and premium, such shame that image quality is not the same as it looks. Distortion & vignetting ok can be fixed, but that huge CA killed this lens, even for free this lens is a waste of space in a bag.

    Nothing can make the lens look cheap as CA and fringing. This lens reminds me on Sigma Contemporary 30mm f1.4 for Nikon, ah such a purple madness wide open all the time, everywhere. This is the main reason I still did not buy it unfortunately.

    Generally, the lens at this point (firmware 1.1.1) is not suitable for some serious applications where we photograph some time-critical events.
    And it's not even about its speed, because this one is quite good (I have no comparison to SEL24F18Z or Zeiss for 1000 USD) but in 80-90% street photography (candid) it works.
    The problem, however, is with its unpredictability.
    Well, in critical situations it happens that the camera cannot sharpen the image.
    Pressing the shutter button halfway has no effect, additionally, it is not possible to take a picture (it does not react to full press). The only option is to turn the camera off and on.
    This situation occurs at several situations.
    a) when we quickly take several photos one after another - (but without using the burst mode)
    b) when we quickly switch between priority modes (e.g. from S to A or P)
    Another problem with autofocus was when focusing at infinity. In some situations it was unable to do so.
    In addition, sometimes after switching the priority mode, the camera lost the ability to change the aperture (it set itself to F16 despite the fact that the ring was set to
    A - i.e. the value controlled automatically from the camera)
    A restart of the camera was required then.
    After some time, I noticed that sometimes the ring on the lens worked in such situations... (you could change F-Stop by rotating ring but not on camera itself)
    As for the pluses, 1.4 is sometimes useful (I tested it quite challanging event the Eyes of Fire - firebattle show)
    tomiga.wordpress.com/2020/08/16/eyes-on-fire-2020-ogniste-igrzyska-na-brzegu-odry/
    I also had a Sigma 56 F1.4 there, from which I took most of the photos - it was without bigger flows - (unfortunately Viltrox failed in many moments - required a restart of the camera - but when the photo was successful it was quite ok).
    Ultimately, I will probably leave this lens to myself, but at the moment I cannot recommend it to someone who expects reliability and trouble-free, especially when it comes to autofocus.
    I assume that some of these problems can be solved by updating the firmware (the lens has a USB socket, so the update should be trouble-free - at least at the connection level).
    I hope that Viltrox will deal with these flaws quite quickly ... because at the moment it looks like the lens has not been tested well ... and it should not hit the market in this form
