I personally prefer the NIKKO brand. You can't tear those things up! I have fished with the same one for a few weeks at a time and caught tons of Bass on it. When you do the math you realize they are no more expensive than other brands because you will go through 10 of the other brands and where I can still be fishing with the same NIKKO. The only drawback I have for the NIKKO it is hard to get a hook through them when you are setting them up.
Leave them out in the sun and, after they heat up, they become much easier to work with. But I agree, that durability is awesome.
Agreed
The durability is amazing. I'm just saying I texas rig it and have lost a lot of bites. Where as if it were softer I would have got them. On the other hand, I'm still using the same Nikko after 15+ bass.
@@gregstabryla9945 - If you're not getting a good hooks on bites, I'd look at skin hooking it, the hook itself or technique in the hook set... otherwise, this bait is very thin top to bottom which should give a great bite to hookup ration--I even use Jon's rigging with the Zman bullet jig-head going through the side (less of a bite than traditionally)... it only has a #1 hook on it and I have a great hookup ratio.
@@mike2687 I also use the Z man bullet head. Maybe I'll try it from the side.
You are the reason I found and started using the Nikko baits. I've also purchased all the new YUM colors lol. You can never have too many hellgrammites.
Thank you! I've been waiting for this 🙌 🙏🏼✌️
I've been watching you since around 19, 000 subscribers. Never watched fishing vids before you. Always have loved being in creeks and seeing all the nature you could ever ask for wading through. Always have fished, but you have brought me to an obsessive level of fishing. Ask my kids. You were my first and still my favorite youtube fishing channel. Thank you!
Thanks for the vid, John. Really great information here.
Thank you for all your input on how to use these lures John, and I really like the little tip on stretching and snapping the Nikko to kinda get the scent back again !
I just maded my first order of the nikko hellgrammite thank you the information on them and thanks for code to help people out
Again this is exactly why I follow your two channels
You take the time to tell your viewers in detail why you use your particular set ups and they work!!
Thanks for making thee videos 👍🎣
I'm so glad that fishtales keeps a steady supply of the Nikko hellgrammite. You turned me on to them, and I've been using them like crazy since.
Great discussion of these bugs. Thanks for sharing John. Blessings on you this day.
Great comparison on the hellgrammite brand differences. I'm going to have to order some online. I've been looking at numerous BPS stores, Academy and some locally owned shops. Seems central Missouri outfitters just don't carry them (most staff haven't even heard of the hellgrammite lure), but we have some awesome smallie rivers/creeks just south of me. Love the looks of the durability of that Nikko.
Great episode John, I appreciate the instructions on how you rig these lures.
I wish you would do the same with swim baits or buzz baits for example. It really helps folks like me better understand how you guys do things!!! Keep up the great content
Because of your videos I was introduced to the Nikko Hellgrammites and I've caught alot of bass on them this year already. I always just used floating minnow style baits or fat shallow diving crank baits with great success but it was really cool to add another weapon to the arsenal with the Nikko baits. I hook them sideways like you do after watching one of your other videos.Tough baits! I caught 33 smallmouths on the same one a couple weeks ago! Thanks for all the great videos! 👍
Thank you for this video I've been wondering what the differences are now I know which one I want
I have been perplexed about my Nikko's melting all the time. Just learned to keep the packaged from another site and now your video. Mystery solved!
I've been using both brands for some time now and the durability of the Nikkos is incredible. One day I caught over 20 smallmouths and 30 rock bass on the same lure without any damage to it whatsoever. Also, the larger 4.25" hellgrammites they now offer are great for targeting that big bite. I tend to stick with natural, dark colors for the Nikkos and a variety of colors of the Yums just to mix things up. As they say, match the hatch, but when in doubt, freak 'em out!
Send me the coordinates of your fishing spot lol
Send those coordinates my way also.😂
Bit of a follow up, but if anyone is interested I posted a pic on Fish Brain on 8-1 of a Nikko hellgrammite that I had used to catch over 80 smallmouths and rock bass. All T rigged. Just another testament to the durability of these lures!
I caught a 7 lb channel cat on the nikko hellgrammite last night plus some largemouth, smallmouth and walleye. What an amazing lure. Thanks for turning me on to this lure John. I really appreciate it.
Another great video buddy! Both are very nice, but my favorite would be the Nikkos. Appreciate you sharing great content as always buddy. And as everyone knows, #MoreCreekFishingAdventures rocks!!!
I have both brands and they catch fish it works because they are in every creek and river so bass see them all the time and love them!! Good info John
Thank you for the tutorial John!!! A lot of great info!!! I prefer the Nikko over the yum because of durability. I also think the Nikko has a better presentation but both will catch fish. At the end of the day it is about the fisherman's preference. God bless you and have a great day. Prayers for your safety on all your fishing adventures.
I've been waiting for this video. I've wanted to test the hellgremite out. I probably try both regardless. God bless
Awesome, just awesome presentation. Thank you.
John I am glad I stumbled across this video. I wasn’t sure what hooks you were using for this bait. Thanks for this video.
Great informative video. I've only used the Yum because of cost but I do catch a lot of fish on them. But I intend to order some Nikkos soon. Thanks for the video.
Good vid, great info. Thanks
Thanks for the info.Thank you Keep making videos 🙏
Very informative john i've even got some from another maker or brand they work well too. The rigging style that you use works well for weedless. Also I hook it through the bottom Still Weedless works well. Makes it stand up a little bit more too. When it hits the bottom. Just hard to beat the Nikko for durability. Nice video as usual
Great video and side-by-side comparison here. I like both brands and have become partial to a lot of the Yum baits. Still not a ton of smallies around me on the hellgramites but down south is golden. Lots of creek bass, rock bass and green sunfish for sure. I still have to use the 6'6 and 6'7 medium fast action rods...short dude but very effective. I also like the Slider jigs similar to the Zman but just the bullet heads. Blessings brother
There you go John, get some of the hook vendors to support this channel. Good luck!
I’ve only used the Nikko brand but I absolutely love em. One pack will last forever and I’ve never failed to catch a fish when using em.
Johhhhn!!! My dude!!! The durability of those Nikko Hellgramites is just unreal matchable for real. Nikko has the best out my opinion. The stretch Armstrong of the fishing world 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I actually haven't tryed the yum out yet but I definitely will. Prolly use your code and order some help us both out!!🤘🤘
I haven't tried the yum hellgramites yet. I need to order a few packs of them. I didn't think about checking local shops for the Nikko stuff. I wished they offered free shipping after a certain amount of purchase. Me and my cousin usually do an order together so we split the shipping cost. He's caught some really big bass on there tadpole lure. Great content as always John. 👊👍
Thanks for the video! I just bought my first pack of hellgrammites, bass pro brand. I’m definitely gonna look into the nikkos & yums though. I’ve never had much luck with plastic baits, I think I work them too fast🤷♂️, but I’m going to give these a shot
After watching your videos recently, I ordered some Nikkos and have caught fish when no one else with me is catching anything, when my “go-to” lures are working, and anytime I want weedless. I am pretty happy that I ordered them, actually fixing to order another pack or two tonight!
Good stuff
Awesome plastic lures!! I love the Nikko hellgrammite and I've caught fish with other brands as well but the Nikko is the one that out lasts all the other brands. But Yum is one of my favorite brands I use ( dingers). Haven't tried Yum hellgrammite yet but i will. Thanks for the info bro!!! I always enjoy watching your videos!!! Keep on fishing buddy!!!! 👍🙏 God bless you!!!
Wow! Great information.
Owner used to have those ultra finesse heads in a 1/32oz with #1 hook. Not sure if they still have that option since I still have about 5 or 6 packs in stock so I haven't had to shop for them in a while but that 1/32oz with #1 hook is great for a nice slow fall, they work great with the Nikko Hellgramite and Leech!
I have learned the same, have to rig it weedless in these rivers with all of the rocks and trees under water. My go to is the ned rig trd or tickler, but I fish it the same as you fish your hellgrammite. I have also settled on the same setup, 6'10 medium with a 2500, 15 lb braid to 10 lb leader. I broke off so many times with 4lb and 6lb leaders I learned the hard way.
NIKKO always!!!! Thx John
both baits have pros and cons. both have application. thanks for the run down.
I’ve been using the same 1 Nikko Helgermite in Junebug color all year an still goin strong.
Great Stuff ! Thanks!
I prefer the Mister Twister Hellgrammite. I think there’s 15 in a pack for $4.29. They look great and are durable
Great info! You just solved the mystery why my zman soft baits were melting. I'm guessing it's the same material as the nikko. As far as the bubblegum swirl yum dingers, I'll have to order them online since they are always sold out locally. I'm gonna try both the nikko and the yum baits and see what plays out.
its the different chemical make-up of the brands that when stored together cause a chemical reaction and the plastics melt together. I've learned the hard way to never mix multiple plastic brands together. I ruined my first pack of Nikko a few years ago after having a killer day catching LMB. It seemed like my second order took a year to arrive....
I had no idea Yum made hellgrammites!!!!! Very interesting 👌 👍
We been smashing them on the Yum version rigging it Neko. The Smallmouth and the rock bass have been smothering it here in Jersey.
I really like the cheburashka rig for baits like these it allows a lot of movement and is weedless
I caught 40 plus bass in Driftwood river in two days and used the brown color Nikko Hellgrammite, still using the same one bait and had a lot of hits with it sitting still and raising up, the Nikko Hellgrammite is long lasting.
These are my go to lures. I used to use the uncle buck brand of hellgramite but can't find them anymore so I picked up some yum brand and was very happy wit the results. My girlfriend d took me to a winery where they have a 2 race bass pond and we killed them
Thank you for this video. Nikko's are awesome. I won't use anything else. They're indestructible
I haven’t finished this video but I actually have been curious on your take here 😂 I haven’t made the swap to yum yet to try them just because I’m a nikko fan but I do want to try the yum as well just to see for myself!
Yum should have worked to get their helgramites on shelves faster! If I'm going to order something I'm going to order Nikko, which I did. Thanks for the code!
Come on, yum products, sponsorship this man already. Great video brother.
they do, its great working with the company that owns yum
@morecreekfishingadventures759 that's awesome. I've never heard you say they sponsor you.
Scott at nikko baits has made some of the best in the business, paying alot of attention to recent bass studies and making molds from there. Nikko is the pinnacle of soft plastics. End quote lol.
I am confident that the Nikko is the best over all Because of it’s durability. But I will try the yum for sure . I like that new color . Could you do a video on how you store your bates when you travel please . I don’t have a lot of space in my Jeep and I need some ideas . Thanks . God Bless you .
I had an adult helgrammite end up on the porch a few days ago attracted to the light. I took it down to the river and let it go but they are gnarly looking.
I’ve been using the tackle HD helgramites
I prefer Nikko products, I have several different colors of their hellgrammites and both sizes they offer in my tackle bag. Not to get off subject but the Zaza worms by Nikko are great also. when you cast them weightless and let them lay on top of the water, I found the bass will hit them when you give it a soft pop.
I love throwing the hellgrammite at fish, I rarely do, but when that thing hits the water its a brutal battle over it. I got the bass pro one in black with blue flake because its the only one in my local store. I wish Z-man would make one.
Aquatic insects are such an underutilized imitation outside of the fly fishing world.
I recently saw some cool underwater bed fishing footage from another channel that captured some kind of insect that uses random debris as a shell, sneaking into a smallie bed. The interaction was pretty crazy: at first the fish just picked up the crawler and spit it away from the nest, but when it came back the fish picked it up, ejected the "shell" the bug was using and ate the bug. The craziest part about it was that this bug was crawling right in front of the camera, but because it was so well camouflaged I had no idea it was alive until my second time watching. It just looked like a tumbling piece of grass or wood.
Love your videos learned a lot for you. What’s your go to colors for the YUM
I've got the same question. I like the mudbug, natural, and obsidian Nikkos
fools gold and tremor, and of course bubblegum lemon swirl
I have only used the yum one so far and it kept twirling and gave me a ton of line twist. I have yet to catch a fish on one so far.
i use a 6in worm from YUM the same color you have the Hellgamite and caught many bass on them
Hey Bro. You have a wasper nest behind the tote under the window to your left. Great video. Thank you.
I've definitely been waiting fr this video - Thanks! Have you fished them on BFS gear at all? I bet they'd be fun to fish with a BFS setup.
Not yet! but i can see that working well
I fish them on a bfs setup, love it!
Nice @@johnnyweaver1300! I've got a kastking zephyr reel on a sensalite light rod with 8-10lb braid to 6-8lb leaders as my lightest baitcaster setups so far. I want to get into the ultralight baitcasting thing tho'.
Would you care to share your setup(s) when you get a sec? What hooks and/or jigheads do you normally use with the hellgrammites?
Haven't tried either but i will here in PA the lakes I fish I don't see many of the jatcjed fly around buy get next to a river or good stream your getting into them
I've tried both. I like both. I use the YUM more often because of price mainly.
The Nikko are more expensive per pack but far cheaper per destroyed bait-catch tons of fish per bait with Nikko making it the cheaper option.
@@mike2687 True, but only if you lose em catching fish and not getting snagged! lol
@@jboulderct - very true! My father and I have been going on a trip to the Shenandoah River every year since I was 5 (44 now and we bring my two boys). We go twice a year-once with my boys with only one full day on the river where most of the trip is about them and swimming and once where we’re on the river for 2-3 three days of nothing but fishing.
I bought 4 packs of the Nikko’s three years ago and still have three packs remaining-haven’t gone this summer yet but that’s 4 trips. We do make a good effort to unhang snags from the canoe.
We also like to throw Zoom Flukes-I usually go through about a pack and a half per day. I used to use the Zoom 5” lizard where I now throw the Nikko and would easily go through two packs per day.
In the end-the Nikko has saved me money while being a more effective fish catcher!
Once I see the yum baits in stores, I’ll give them a shot-I’m a big fan of the brand. I usually use the Bass Pro Hellgrammite on a Ned rig for my boys because they are new to fishing (especially river fishing) and are more apt to hang up and lose the bait. In their inexperienced hands, Nikko baits are expensive! Being much more familiar with the nuances of river fishing, Nikko is cheaper with one caveat-if we’re talking bank fishing-well then, snags are a real issue if it’s too deep, cold or fast moving and the angler can’t get to it.
Personally the one in my bait bucket works great.
Used to order Nikko online a bunch here in Ohio but thankfully 2 local shops and Vance Outdoors started stocking them!
yeah the Creek Crawler got some of the stores up there to carry them
I weightless Texas rig or 1/16 oz weight pegged
I've noticed you're just using the Yum lately. I haven't tried them yet, but want to. I use the Nikko which is tough as nails, but I have lost a lot of fish from having to set the hook harder.
BOTH! I think fish want to hold on to the yum more often than the Nikko because it's softer
Trout Magnet makes some awesome hellgrammites, too.
I've caught fish on both I like the yum brand because they are more affordable lol
If you rig the nikko hellgrammites belly down and flat, it falls slowers so naturally it will be in their face and strike zone longer as it's swims down. The front 6 legs will also flutter/wiggle from the water resistance creating small vibrations as it descend or swims.
Sideways is more aerodynamic in the water, less resistance, less surface fighting against the horizontal water pressure as it descend, so it will fall faster or dive. The legs are also inline and tucked in with the body most likely creating less vibrations if at all.
Different actions, similar profile while swimming. In different situations, one can outperform the other. Other times, fish might not care as anything that looks thick and buggy is potentially a good source of protein.
I bet the bubblegum swirl is your favorite. 😂
i bought some of these using your code. U live pretty close to me. Maybe i will take u ultralight fishing with me sometimes, and have u fish some true ultralight tackle.
I found a hellgrammite made HD lures. They come 3.5 inch and 5 inch. I caught some smallmouth on them
yes i have seen those work great, i need to try them
They float, too. They are soft like yum. @morecreekfishingadventures759
Love the nikko but for river smallmouth I lose too many too quick. Here in Pa. Fearless Fishing makes a good inexpensive hellgramite. Fish it on a ned rig or drop shot.
live hellgies i used on a bobber 3 feet up from lure and float down river.i was on the bass .the catfish guys say it works great on channel cats in river too
I feel like putting the hook in sideways like you do makes it a lot easier to catch smallmouth. It honestly makes it look more natural and the hook less visible.
Thank you for doing this video, I've used your discount code to purchase both, I've tried them on chickamauga lake & had no luck, but went to the river side of dam & caught 1 on june bug color with the Nikko hellagramite 4.25, I ordered the green pumpkin but it looks blue, I'm going to try the black & the fire, I see that you do have to fish it slowly, I've seen you in pretty fierce current & catch them do you still use a 1/8 oz? which size do you prefer the 3.0 or the 4.25? I've been using the owner finesse ball jig for years one of the best!🎣😎👍
if its really fast then maybe go heavier, also if its deeper water
@@morecreekfishingadventures today I fished the Nikko & the yum hellagramites & got bit on both the 1st was the Nikko 4.25 black & the 2nd was yum fools gold that caught a mean mouth & mix of spotted & sm at least a 2lbr, so I'm very glad that it gets bites on a lake, but probably is better used on a creek or river!!
What color in FL lakes / rivers? Brown colored are the only natural ones I have seen here.
Hey! What kind of hook and size hook did you use at 11:11 in this video? I need to try a weightless approach!
They work great with a 2/0
Ewg
NIKKO 100% 🔥 👍
I hook mine with a size 2 bass hook and a splitting weight. Budget rig and it works to. I rig mine like you so I don't hook every log and rock at the bottom. That video I made recently im still using that same hellgramite weight qnd hook after all those smallies. But I like that rig to keep me from getting snagged up. I tryed it on a ned rig and lost 3 Ninjo hellgramites in a day and I'll never do that again 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He loves bubblegum lemon swirl 😂 he needs a cake or ice cream snow cone even maybe lol
I like the gulp ones but they don't last.
only nikko i got is 2 bags of the ned worm.2 bags ttl was 22.00.17 plus 6 buckd frejght from fish usa
I've never found Nikko in any B&T store from big box to the local mom and pop. I think Nikko is huge in Asia
No brand will beat Nikko when it comes to hellgrammite. I’ve had one I’ve tied one for nearly a year now and still going strong. Lost two others only due to snag.
I have to go with the Yum. Purely based on price and value. You lose quite a few rigs in the rocks and at $4 a shot that hurts. Very
interesting how you rig them sideways. What made you start doing that. Thanks for the video and breakdown.
i dont know, after fishing with them for a long time it just seemed right
You got a paper wasp nesting behind that black tote behind you, John?
yum i got for 3 50 free ship amazon.nikko is 8.00 and 8 shipping so 16.00.thats alot more
The only problem that those lures have and it's both of them. Is that they need to work on distribution and marketing. If it were not for you many of us wouldn't even know they exist. Now if someone would make a quality 3 inch spring lizard we could have the soft baits covered.
For the design, give me the Nikko. For Scent, give me Yum.
I can't get around that shipping price. Approximately $16 for only 4 lures. If Nikko ever gets their shipping and handling under control, I'd buy it. My second attempt trying to buy the product, just can't convince myself to pay that much. If I had more lures in the pack I'd purchase.
It’s $6 for me. It’s not terrible if you buy like $50-60 worth but if you’re paying for a single pack it’s a hard sell when Walmart has the Yum ones now.
I ordered off Amazon with another purchase so I got free shipping
@morecreekfishingadventures Unfortunately I just learned a lesson the hard way. If I could literally kick myself in the rear end, I would! Really hard too! I had mixed two Nikko Hellgramite bags of mine, brand new and what do you know? Just as you mentioned not mixing the two different brand types,I jumped up and ran to the storage area behind my home, frantically getting into the package of the other name brand I had purchased while fishing the Jacks Fork here in Mo. Only to find out the bad news after opening it up finding my Nikko brand melted to one another more than anything. Do stupid things, wim stupid prizes is what I say! At least i'll know better next time around.
oh no thats terrible, but the jacks fork is a cool place
@@morecreekfishingadventures it is DEFINATELY a Beautiful area as it is part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. I'm a birn and raised Missourian and ever since I was a very young boy,my parents had been taking me the 4-5 hour trips down there for summer vacations. My Great Grandmother used to live in the Bootheel around the Big River,Jhonson Shutt-Inns area and I have family in Paragould AR which is another Beautiful state along with TN.
Personally I like Yum plastics . There cheap and readily available. The only drawback is durability. Nikko products are great too but not available everywhere. For me price and availability wins .
Love the durability of the Nikkos. But don't keep them in a vehicle in the Summer. They will melt if out of their bag.
The fact that Yum and other companies mimicked the Nikko hellgrammite says all you need to know. Nikko hellgrammites don't contain any poisons, either. I personally can go about 500-1000 catches on a single hellgrammite. Cost per catch is by far the best value out there.
