troupes are so fun until people start describing a book as "only one bed, rivals to lovers, forbidden romance" like i want a PLOT and CHARACTERS with the troupes worked in naturally
@@ville__rage bait used to be believable
@@trainnubb7373 for real 😐
Only when there done right, tho
Forbidden romance might be the plot, Romeo and Juliet
I agree, for Shakespeare, that is. But nowadays I expect something different, I want them to work uniquely. @emilyschomer6715
i feel like friends to lovers is one of the few tropes that is actually healthy irl
edit: enemies to lovers is my #1 fav trope, i was just saying if the tropes were to happen irl. i don’t hold as much of a moral standard to book tropes lol, they’re supposed to be guilty pleasures and enjoyable:)
Fr
Sure, but tropes don’t need to be healthy irl to be good. The point of a story is to, well, tell a story. It’s not supposed to be a step-by-step guide to healthy relationships.
@@ohno3464 i dont think they were saying that it has to be healthy to be good? just that its... healthy ? lol
@@ohno3464Damn calm down they weren't talking about fiction they were talking about real life like relax 😭

ive said it and ill say it again, friends to lovers is the best type of slow burn. "I WanNa RUin oUR friEndShiP, WE sHoulD be lOveRs InSteAd"
*cough cough* Star Vs. The Forces of Evil *COUGH*
4:50 Rather than the “second chance” trope, I am a MUCH bigger fan of the “right pair, wrong time” trope, when the couple had to break up due to fundamental differences or flaws between both parties, but eventually get back together after they BOTH grow as people. I especially love when the show doesn't push or even hint them getting back together, letting both move on and maybe even become close friends before the thought of reuniting romantically even crosses their minds.
Whenever executed well, it’s genuinely one of my favorite romantic tropes of all time, and it baffles me how no one talks about it. I've seen this successfully happen in real life as well, and it's just magical. Personal growth is just the most beautiful thing.
Yessss!!! Right person wrong time is one of my favorite tropes 😭 I actually wrote one a couple years ago but forgot about it till now
Do you have some recs? This sounds cute
@@laurencamila9024maybe One Day?
Leaving a comment here in case if anybody recommend some ( pls mention me)
New Girl with Jess and Nick gives this
I love age gaps ONLY when they’re in the characters minds. Like a senior freaking out about dating a junior and the other person is just like “I’m one month younger then you 😑”
THIS!!
My parents legitimately lived a book-romance. On the topic of second chance, they went to the same college but didn't know each other because my dad is two years older. They met when a friend set them up on a blind date. They hated each other, my mom accidentally stole my dad's phone and wouldn't give it back because she hated him so much. Years later they tried out a relationship again and have been married for 17 years. The phone my mom "stole" from my dad is framed in our living room.
This is the most wholesome thing I have read all week😭
Damn
Omg,why this so funny to me?
I will say, I hate the amnesia trope. Like how you said there’s a weird power imbalance for the inexperienced girl and the bad boy, there’s also one for the amnesia trope. I mean, the person who has amnesia doesn’t know anything about this stranger, but they know everything about them. That’s creepy to me. And imagine if that were to happen in a relationship that’s already abusive, the person without amnesia could use their knowledge of the other person to manipulate them even further. It just gives me too many red flags
i need to see someone do a movie decontructing this trope like i’m not a fan of Poor Things but i know that it intended to do that to the born sexy yesterday trope. If a movie hopefully not marked as romance could do that then pls. Amnesia trope always felt weird to me.
I hated it in BERSERK
I love it when the character who remembers recognizes the power imbalance and decides to grow close to them again naturally without pushing anything on the one with amnesia. It’s one of the many things I admire about the Webtoon “Stagtown.”
@@amazingzie378 yesss Stagtown is one of the best webtoons out there. I also love their latest work Cinderella Boy.
@@renoirrr I love Punko’s works SO MUCH! They’re one of my favorite Webtoon creators! I also really love Bryan Golden, if you’re interested in checking out other stuff.
The only second chance trope i can think of are Peter B and Mary Jane from spider-verse. They don't get much screen time together but Peter's whole arc in the first film is him realising where he messed up and, through self discovery and his relationship with Miles, becoming the person MJ would want to be with. I really liked it here
Second chance really works for me when the story starts with the relationship already broken up and there's this tension because of their history. You weren't there to see the history, you just feel the tension.
@@laurencamila9024 Mmm, yeah this is a good point! If it's all in the same thing then the audience has very little time to forgive/process feelings when the characters could've had years and that'd definitely create a disconnect. Thank you for the insight ^-^
Before we were strangers
The Mistake
Regretting you
I don’t know if you wanted recommendations, but here are some🙃
Enemies to lovers is literally the GREATEST thing, Pride and Prejudice 2005 is one of my favorite pieces of media ever 😂
They’re not really enemies tho. Also I watched that for the first time recently and didn’t really get it. There was tension for no reason and not true build up. They didn’t give them reasons to really like each other besides attraction. I found it odd
Pride and Prejudice 2005 forever! Truely an unbeatable gem.
The trope is great until it's forced onto fictional characters that are just enemies.
What I love abt the “pure” girl and the player/bad boy is that the bad boy embraces all the good in him to get on the girl’s level. They each change for the better and benefit from it. If it’s anything else I just like the opposite aesthetics.
This is why I hated Grease
The problem is that it fetishizes infantilization.
@@laurencamila9024 Yeah, it's a problematic story to say the very least, but the soundtrack slaps
@@amazingzie378 what do u mean?
She is a "pure and innocent girl' but one kiss and she is a freak in the sheets lmao, most of those are so ridiculous.
I agree with most of your arguement with the cheating trope, however, it gets a pass if the other relationship is abusive. Jack and Rose for example. Caledon would've literally killed Rose if she tried to break it off. He chokes her when she's disobedient and tries to shoot her and Jack. So cheating gets a pass in that form.
Also my favorite grumpy/sunshine always and forever will be Tohru and Kyo
EXACTLY
yeah i was going to comment that bc sure they’re engaged but rose doesn’t even like him
I like age gap only in fantasy books if they’re immortal. As long as they’re over 25, i can work with it 😭
tbh love triangles need A LOT OF WORK not to get weird or super boring and usually they just make the mc to be like a child unable to make a decision for themselves ever
Same. It rarely feels like it's actually a complex emotional relationship between three thinking, feeling people, and instead mostly feels like two hot guys/girls fighting over the one they like while said person just kind of passively observes the whole situation. Which admittedly COULD be amusing if the object of their interests was well aware of what was going on and intentionally staying as a passive observer because they're a dick who enjoys watching the chaos unfold, but more often than not they just kind of seem to be...there.
I think one of the few stories where I've seen love triangles that I actually enjoyed was Buffy the Vampire slayer. It had several throughout the show, but they were all different and interesting in their own ways - especially since no one in the triangle ever felt like they were just a passive observer with no agency in the situation.
@@ville__ dont care didnt ask your content sucks ass
@@VenathTehN3RD GOD THATS SO REAL honestly i hate when its just two random attractive people fighting for the blandest character ever with absolutely zero social awareness it gives me SO MUCHHH second hand embarassment
I experienced my first amnesia trope last night and I am FUMING because all that progress is GONE (it was enemies to lovers and slow burn too😩)
Lore drop I'm begging
@@Ispspsps-kl1ltIts “Once Upon A Broken Heart” ITS AMAZING
@@imnotafurry7118 stop i just read that 'm sobbing 😭
Omg yes I just finished the ballad of never after and im scared to start a curse for true love😭😭
@@GaiaisPupz I read it recently too. SOOO good but the angst omg it’s so worth it though 😭
for an example of a love triangle that is an *actual* triangle, may I suggest "the iron widow"! the mc has two love interests and for a moment, when they eventually meet there's not only an unspoken brief rivalry about her affection but also... a couple of sparks between the two guys as well 🤭 it kinda turns into a non-labeled poly relationship if I remember correctly hehe
Omg Iron Widow is one of my favorite books! I love seeing it get more attention ❤ it’s so underrated
I love iron widow, so I can 100% recommend it. Just be aware of the fact that it's dark and you're good.
only type of cheating trope i like is person in abusive relationship finds someone who truelly loves them, kinda like harley cheating on joker with ivy, but its still iffy depending on how it's written
I love friends to lovers and I will die on the hill of vanilla, I don't care. Lately, though, I am starting to see the appeal of rivals to lovers, specifically academic rivals (thanks Anne with an E), because, if you couldn't tell I prefer it when the couple has a solid foundation.
Not using peeta for amnesia trope is criminal
or my darcy and elizabeth for enemies to lovers like they’re the blueprint !! 😭
But peeta didnt have amnesia. He was brainwashed to be kind of sleeper agent to kill Katniss. He still knows and remembers Katniss, its just most of his memories were altered or warped by his Capital conditioning.
When you mentioned the Jack and Rose thing, Rose couldn’t have just broken it off with Cal because her mum was controlling and everyone wanted her to get married to Cal especially for his money but she didn’t like Cal and she was with Jack because she actually loved him. It wasn’t that easy for Rose to have just “broken it off” with Cal. Jack was her escape from her controlled life which is why she was seeing him while she was in her forced marriage with Cal. Also, who know what Cal would have done to her if he knew she was with Jack? He already tried to shoot them while the ship was sinking.
The only form of second chance I like is right person wrong time. My favs are definitely friends to lovers, right person wrong time and star crossed/tragically fated lovers
XO Kitty would have been another great example for the love triangle, tho in that case it was more of a love square lmao
I don’t like the cheating trope either, but Cal was a violent monster. Rose was probably terrified to call it off.
I didn't watch "Titanic", so i went to search about the relationship between these two and to see how bad it was, and... 30 and 17?!
Rose was also in an "arranged marriage" trope already. Is it cheating if you are forced to be with them? Idk
i'd like second chance if it combined with right person wrong time, like the second chance being more so dating when the time is right for both of them and not being because one of them was a bad partner
I feel Adrienette works perfectly for the slow burn trope 😂 because it deffo was a slow burn relationship to the point it took 5 seasons for Adrien to finally admit he liked Marinette romantically also the amnesia trope happened in Sailor Moon too, Usagi had to try & remind Mamoru that he was her boyfriend
I feel like there's a difference between a legit slow burn and having quirky coincidences constantly ruin ship moments for 4 seasons straight (still love it tho)
It's not a slow burn, bc it wasn't burning at all
@@kamota8523it was a dumpster fire
I feel like you need to start watching some Korean Dramas cuz they are legit these tropes often all in one drama
Yes!!! Business Proposal is my very favorite, an amazing example of the Fake Dating Trope
fr i only watch kdramas and webtoons sometimes ig and these are pretty common
Yaahhh she definitely does cause all these tropes thrive in different onesss
6:59 It's not cheating if there's no relationship. Parents got you engaged and you've never met no one can say it was betrayal
Remember that most tropes aren’t always problematic, nor do they always work. It depends on how they’re used.
The best Second Chance is Persuasion by Jane Austen. The only reason they didn’t work out the first time is because she let her family get in her head, so it’s about her arc of learning how to be firm in her own convictions.
i also feel like the 'makeover' troupe and 'don't tell my secret, i'll do anything' troupe should also get talked about. i'm not sure how i feel about it being the only stand alone romantic troupe but it definitely gets interesting when mixed with other troupes.
i used to be turned off by any friends to lovers troupe but recently i came across this grumpy and sunshine, childhood friends to lovers story and something about it just made me keep wanting more 😅
the best amnesia trope is for sure is Eleanor and Chidi in The Good Place. In every universe they still belong together and it makes me so happy.
I'm a sucker for "Love at first punch", as seeing someone whos never stood up to finally have it done and falling in love with the one person who does is funny and sweet.
Yes. We can ABSOLUTELY talk about Gnomeo and Juliet. Anytime you please.
Jay and Gloria from Modern Family are like the only age gap romance that’s actually healthy
For me the large age gap is an imbalance of power like you said, but it’s also the fact that they are in different stages in their lives. I mean even if they both are graduated and have jobs, one will have more experience than the other and will likely die sooner, etc! Plus maybe the other person just likes them because of that persons connections.
I definitally would say Korra. Asami, and Mako are a love triange. AND ASAMI AND KORRA GOT TOGETHER THE 2 GIRLS going for the guy! ( From Legend of Korra)
My parents were good girl×bad boy
And they're in love to this day
That's so good
Just when I felt like I needed a new Amanda video, you always deliver 🙏
SAME I FREAKING LOVE BANTER AND ENEMIES TO LOVERS SO SO MUCH
i fully agree about the second chance trope
Oh girl when you got to love triangles… I think you’d love the Challengers movie. I love love loved it. 10/10 would recommend. Movie of the year for me.
was definitely a good movie. use of music, silence, and camera work was so creative and hardly seen nowadays. however, i didn’t like the ending because it felt so vague. BUT 10/10 movie frfr
SO EXCITED for bridgerton on May 16th, I’ve never been a friend to lovers trope kinda girl but recently I e been so into it. SO SO SO EXCITED
The Segway into the ad read was hilarious😂 good video!
thank you for the upload goat 🙌
I def agree in that every time a character we're supposed to like cheats in a story it makes me so mad. I also think that feeling is exaggerated by the fact that it seems to be in SO much media right now. And like, when it's a character that is supposed to be bad or unlikeable then I still don't like that they're doing it, but I think it can be good story wise, vs if I'm supposed to like the character it can make it hard to continue to and I'll find myself trying to pretend it didn't happen so I don't have to think about it lol
I LOVE your enthusiasm. you seem fun to be around
the second lead syndrome in a love triangle is so real
Thank you Amanda, more people need to be brave enough to say I like Gnomeo and Juliet, even just for the Elton John soundtrack
My fav trope ever is "rivals to friends to lovers" like lumity and caskett
I love finally being able to support you day of dropping, been binging your vids for forever now😁 keep it up Queen💯🔥
8:07 PEETA MELLLAARRRKKKKKKK fell in love with KATNISSS TWICEEE
this makes so much sense for you
Here in 5 minutes. I love your videos!!! 🥰
An example for the love triangle could be on The Infernal Devices books by Cassandra Clare (parts of the Shadowhunters series) because the girl is attracted to both guys and they like each other in a platonic way.
It's not a true romantic situation but the fact that the guys are parabatai, that they actually like each other and genuinely wish the best for the girl is so good.
I don't think a true romantic love triangle could exist because if so, that's a polyamourous relationship. If every people in the triangle likes another person within this triangle, then they should turn it in a poly relationship 🫡
As a Demisexual, for the longest time friends to lovers was the ONLY acceptable romance to me. Could not relate to anything else 😂
I actually really dislike "pure girl" x "bad boy/playboy trope". Bad boy is ok (which is Flynn Rider), but playboy gives me the severe ick. FMC won't change the "player". He'll probably tell her they aren't exclusive and call her clingy
Amnesia trope reminds me of Boys Over Flowers and Master's Sun (I love both despite disliking the trope lol)
Looking at these 2 Kdramas, I just remembered poor girl x rich guy trope. I eat that sh*t up every time (and I wanna be delusional)
Honestly, I'd say that's probably also something worth noting with any of these tropes: there tend to be a lot of different variations that may be more or less likable depending on the details. The "Pure Girl + Bad Boy (who is a player)" scenario is different than the "Pure Girl + Bad Boy (who is troubled but not a genuinely bad person)" scenario , and both are different from the "Pure Girl + Bad Boy (who is just a legitimate psychopath)" scenario, and that sort of thing.
Since both "Pure Girl" and "Bad Boy" are pretty vague categories that can fit a lot of their own different individual sub-tropes, combining them into a relationship creates an even larger number of possible options that could be anything from 100% relationship goals to absolutely toxic and gross depending on how it's handled.
@@VenathTehN3RD I forgot about the psychopath bad boy! That's also a 50/50 for me. When it's a "yandere", I like it, but when it's a dark romance novel "psychopath", I dislike it (based on book reviews I've seen on YT, I know I would drop the book instantly).
@@burnt_samosa For me, I think the difference between a good and bad "psychopath bad boy" tends to tie into the author's awareness and execution of it. When an author is aware of how messed up the character is and actually uses it as a significant point in the plot/character development is when the trope is at its best. The trope is at its worst when the author writes someone who behaves like a complete psychopath but seems to be completely oblivious to how messed up the character's actions are, with the result being that the characters (and world in general) don't treat the character like the horrible person they are no matter what horrible things they do...because the author doesn't seem to think that what they're doing is bad. And of course, as with any trope, a lot tend to fall somewhere in between.
I just saw you have 139k subs I'm so proud!! I've been here since 20k :)
If you have ever seen Sailor Moon before it would be great if you could make a video exploring it and the many dynamics, if not it's so iconic and you should watch it!
I DESPISE slow burns with a passion, but I've been told this may be because I've never seen any good ones.
KAGEHINA GOES CRAZYYYY
Love this ranking! 👏👏 I also love a good secret identity romance - like in Miraculous (obviously), Renegades by Marissa Meyer, Tweet Cute by Emma Lord. So much suspense & drama in how they’ll react to the truth!
i LOVE a good secret identity
Miraculous was a mix of secret Identity & slow burn trope
That sponsership transition was so smooth
Shrek Forever After is the epitome of the amnesia trope, I said what I said
In humble opinion the best love triangle I've ever come across is jem, will and tessa from The Infernal devices.
I love the love triangle in Legend of Korra. Korra likes Mako, who first dates Asami, but they break up and Korra dates Mako, but it doesn't work out so they break up, then Korra and Asami start to date
Still terrible to me,this is reason why I can't rewatch Korra😬
One trope I don’t like is height difference. Look. I KNOW some people love it, but I just. No. As someone who is rather short, I would NOT want a super tall partner. I would look like their child! And I know that’s not really 100% logical, because obviously I’m not, but I would *feel* like it too. It’s, like, a physically manifested power imbalance. A literal, physical power imbalance. Idk, it just makes me feel icky. I can affect it in some cases, but anything that’s like really extreme or really *emphasised* puts me off
i’m of average height and i dont get the hype either. it just feels like you described- being a physically manifested power imbalance. also how do you do the super cute forehead touch/lean thing 😭
@@renoirrr literally!! Forehead touches makes the world go round
I'm not short but I agree it always disturbed me, I don't want my partner being that much taller than me. Seeing it in film is even more strange they look like a literal child compared to their partner and if its an enemies to lovers, age-gap or bad guy innocent girl type of relationship its even more unsettling. Not to come at anyone in that dates anyone with height differences its just me.
@@cloutwolf5665 YES EXACTLY. That’s what I was getting at when I said “emphasised”. It’s just really uncomfortable
@@Scatterbrained_Watching thank you I’m glad it’s not just me, I actually saw a video of an animated story using sims 4 the game (and other softwares) about a wolf boy falling for a bunny girl or something, and the thumbnail was a full grown man like licking a face of a LITERAL CHILD, she legit looked like a 10 year old character, I clicked and saw everyone in the comments eating it up. So gross.
10:17 there's a webtoon called "The Kiss Bet" and... the plot moves with bets but it's not the "oh I'm only doing this because of the bet" but everything actually starts and moves with bets and- it's really good... and also a slow burn... really slow... but I love the pain of it being slow...
I like age gap stories. Only because in fiction, anything that is said would be true. Take out the ugliness of the trope, like the power inbalance, and make it pure and true. Unless its shown as the toxic thing it is.
Also, I read a LOVELY fanfiction where two childhood best friends lose touch, and then reconnect twenty years later because the one of them becomes famous. God, the fic was filled to the brim with cotton candy with a dash of spice and angst. My absolute favorite depiction of friends to lovers ever!!!
This is how I would put these tropes in order.
1. Slow Burn (extra points if it has enemies to lovers)
2. Enemies to Lovers
3. Forbidden love
4. Rivals to lovers
5. Sunshine x Grumpy
6. One bed trope
7. Fake dating
8. Friends to lovers
9. Amnesia
10. Love triangles
11. Cheating
12. Age gap
13. The bet
14. Second chance
It got harder after number 9. I don't really like any of them. 😅😅
Sup amanda!
There’s this really good manga called “after the rain” which is an age gap romance but with a more mature and nuanced take on the trope. I would recommend it to you since the older male character is incredibly realistic and mature in acknowledging the strange dynamic and because the story itself becomes a very beautiful and melancholic story about adolescence.
Any total drama fans watching will know that series has at least half of these tropes
I don't like the cheating trope either but Rose had no way out of her engagement. In that time period it wasn't something that you could do under normal circumstances and with Rose's family needing the money, it was out of the question. For that reason I feel that Titanic would have fit better under the forbidden love category. Also, in Gnomeo and Juliet and any other version of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet was arranged to marry another man, so she was cheating just like Rose was.
First of all do your research right if you truly payed attention to the movie Titanic it’s a beloved classic!! Rose was forced into marriage by her mother who wanted all the money, Rose was only 17 a MINOR forced to be engaged by a 30 yrd man after only 3 months!? Rose wasn’t cheating on that bastard, she deserved more than that as you can tell throughout the movie she didn’t want to be with him at all, she was miserable to the edge of a ship wanting to drown. Until she met Jack, they both took the risks to be with eachother. Jack and Rose showed sacrifice, loyalty, and true love BEST SHIP of them all in my opinion. And that Ship will never sink period.
I’m sorry but fake dating troupes r so cute, a book I like doing that is Hani and Ishu’s guide to Fake Dating, it’s so cute 😍😍
Please read the webtoon “Serena” it’s SO good and I think you’d love it 😭😭🙏🏼
50 first dates is the best example of the amnesia trope, it's literally so amazing
One of my favorite Shows has a real Love triangle in it, where all three have a connection, not only one to the two others. The Name of the Show ist Siren, and I personally loved and would definetely recommand it.
With Monopoly Go there is still a risk. My sister once full on assaulted me in the face because I landed on free parking. Now she can just throw her phone at me
they way you didnt put nico and will for grumpy and sunshine is a crime at its finest
Slow burn will always be my favorite
I'm sorry if I'm petty but rivals and enemies are two different things. Enemy implies some sort of hatred toward the other character, while rival is usually just competitive in nature. You can be rivals but also friends or you can be enemies and rival. Sorry for the rant.
I loveeeee friends to lover and the first one that came to mind was finny and autumn
The second chance troupe is giving November 9
the amnesia trope only works to revive longterm couples and ill die on this hill
Anya and Dmitri are peak enemies to lovers for me ❤❤❤
a second chance trope i can excuse is the kdrama Our Beloved Summer because i could relate to Kook Yeon-Su so much 🫶
OMG I am also super excited for the new Haikyuu Movie like really excited
okay but i genuinely love kagehina
There’s definitely a _love triangle_ of a sort in *She’s The Man* … and I _love _ it! It’s part of the reason why I enjoy that movie so much.
AMANDA WATCH ONE DAY!!!!!! PLEASEEE
Weird question but what is your outro song? I love listening to it but don't know what it is😭
I just finished the 1st draft of my 25th book last night, and I am definitely one for reusing my favourite tropes aaaaall the time (hurt/comfort, enemies-to-lovers and there's only one bed to name a few!) My latest book as a grown-up fairytale about a knight falling for the shadowmancer she's sworn to kill. Involves a scene of him hiding one of the sleeping pallets so that they have to share... ^_^
You just gave me the idea to do this but Kdrama plot points
About the age gap trope, I had a brief relationship with a 52 year old man when I was 20. I met him when I was 19 and left the country when I was turning 21, so it was a short one.
I had had a few relationships before him, but he was my first love. Of course I was aware of the difference in experience and power, but I never felt like that played against me.
I agree that in MOST cases it is just older men abusing their position, but sometimes you just fall in love with someone you were not supposed to.
why is your channel so me
Her citing actual books and shows meanwhile every trope she mentions I'm like "Ah yes, X fanfic covers this"
"I love bantering."
"Ok that wasn't even funny, that was just bantering. I am totally against bantering."
I absolutely love the “Gentle Giant” trope. It’s just so sweet and wholesome 😭
Edit: (Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the K Drama “Extraordinary You” falls under this, love that show down btw)
I want a love triangle. Where they become a thriaple
