- Here is how I modified the shifter on my 2006 Triumph Speed Triple 1050 to use the Yamaha YZ80/85 shifter .
I used a shifter designed to fit Yamaha YZ 85 2002-2010 used for Yamaha part 2HF-18110-01, 1LX-18110-00, 2HF-18110-00 - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Best mod ever for my 2009 speed triple.. it completely changed my experience with the bike. I don’t want to sell it anymore 😅. Much more crisp, fast and precise to shift
It is amazing how this cheap mod tightens up a sloppy gear change - I ended up removing the folding 'peg' and fitting a fixed one which gave an even more rigid shift. I no longer have the speed triple, but I really enjoyed riding it.
I watched this video ages ago. Then recently I had someone smash into me and break my shifter peg. Triumph doesn't make oem rear sets for my 06 speed triple any more, and the aftermarket rear set piece that is supposed to connect to the shifter doesn't fit. This video is going to save me money and improve my bike. Much appreciated!
It seems triumph are quick to stop supporting parts for bikes these days - I think this mod worked well and the oem set up goes sloppy pretty quick after fitting due to its poor design - so cheap and works better. I ended up grinding off the folding peg and drilling and bolting on a fixed peg for extra "feel" - not absolutely needed - just me!
I did this today, what a difference it makes 👍🏻 thank you for the information
Glad it helped! I have further modified it to add a fixed toe peg - it is not an essential addition its just my preference.
A great mod to my 09 speed triple!!! I can actually find neutral instantly. Gear changes have been transformed, very crisp. I’d recommend this to anyone. Thanks for the info 👍
I'm glad the video helped - thanks for the comment
Did this on my 07 speed triple some years ago. Made a massive difference. I just bought an 09 model and this is the first mod I'm doing. I've had about a dozen false neutrals already on the standard set up. 🤣
Yes - I think its a good and reversible mod . Thanks for your comment
Hi mate do you note a difference between the 07 & 09 model?

Modded my 2010 model last weekend, really positive gearshift now! Thanks for the tip!
Great to hear! Thanks for your comment
Great vid, you have a real knack for explaining stuff well, I dont have that bike but found myself listening intently 🤣
Love the model you made, and seriously thought whether the springbloading would bother me....... and got me thinking about it on my bike which has a similar gear change to the original. I quite like my gear change though because I have 4 more neutrals than anyone else 🤪
Thanks for your comment - Im glad you liked the Blue Peter-esk model 😂
Great video! Touched on all important talking points.
Thank you for your comment 👍
Really well done and explained.
Thanks for your comment - I tried to keep it simple and no over complicate what is a simple task .
Briliant video Ponkster!! I'll probably never own that bike but christ that's mad, and interesting that Triumph didn't just do this themselves :D
Thanks - its an easy mod , I can only assume Triumph used existing parts which saved money
@@ThePonkster Yeah but one most wouldn't think of! Really liked how you explained it too, not easy break something down that well.
Probably....pity they didn't think for 20 seconds and just buy that exact lever!
Glad it is better for you now 👍🏻
You know what its like - little improvements to get the bike where you want it , this bike was bought for riding and not so much working on as my other are mostly in bits most of the time 😀 - Thanks again for your comment .👍
Than you very much, good Sir🤝 Will put it on my 2010 Speedy one day^^
I'm glad I could help 👍
Awesome video, helped me a lot!!
It was a nice cheap mod that really improved the bike - I did enjoy owning that bike!
One of the best mods i ever did to my 2010 S3 SE. It`s better in every way in my opinion.
I agree - I have further modified mine by putting a fixed toe peg on it . - thanks for your comment - more speed triple content coming soon 😀
I was wondering doing the same thing to mine. Do you have a link to what fixed toe peg you used? Great content by the way 👍
@@potet12345678 I cut down the one in the video , drilled it and used a bolt through racing peg shifter peg I had kicking around
Sweet! Is it a good improvement? Saw on a Triumph forum that the gear shifter from the Speed Four 03-05 fit the 2005-2010 S3. So i might get that one 😄
I could listen to you with your accent all day! LOL!
What - I've got an accent ? 😂
Great to know, just ordered one for my “new” ‘08 Speed Triple. The stock shifter is vague and a bit sloppy, hoping this makes it more positive.
I hope it works for you - thanks for the comment.
Nice looking mod, I have a question: do you reckon the replacement part will work if it's fitted right up against the motor case?
The end of my shifter shaft on my 06 sheared off this morning(for no good reason, just fatigue I guess), right in the middle where the groove for the pinch bolt creates a weak point. I'm hoping your mod will work if fitted to the remainder of the shaft . If it does it would save me a lot of bother.
Being made of alloy you can easily heat it up and reshape it to suit your needs - as long as you have enough shaft to clamp to I wouldnt see it being a problem. I have further modified the shifter by removing the folding peg and fitting a fixed one.
@@ThePonkster Superb, thanks. Reckon I'll give it a go, no harm in trying, eh?
Having just bought an '06 Speed Triple I'm keen to give this a go. Where did you get the shifter from if you don't mind me asking? I'm having difficulty finding a UK supplier. Cheers.
It was an Ebay purchase - the same shifter fits lots of small dirtbikes so you should find one available- search for "Yamaha YZ 85 2002-2010 Lever" and you should find one. I have further modified the lever since the video to remove the folding part and fitted a fixed peg in its place .
Nice video👍. One question tough is with this mod would be possible to get GP shift pattern?
With this mod you get a one down - five up shift pattern like the original shifter - I do explain this in the video . I hope this helps😀
@@ThePonkster I totally lost it, thanks for clarifying. I just got a 2015 speed triple and I’m trying to figure out how to have a quickshifter up and down with GP shift
Interesting mod, I can't remember what the gearchange was like on my 05 Speed Triple, but this looks far more sensible than all that linkage. Regarding the sprung toe lever, could you not turn it around on the arm?
I did play around with turning the peg round to be spring loaded the other way - but seemed to be better the wrong way round (if you know what I mean ) . Im not that concerned about it folding as the factory one didn't fold either . It certainly does make a nicer shift even if it does 'trigger' the triumph purists a bit😀 Thanks again for your comment .
@@ThePonkster Let them be triggered! :D
i have a problem that the shifter pedal grinds against the shaft that goes to the gearbox.. so this is a way easier solution than just buying the whole original set. thanks!
Thanks - I have further modified the shifter by fitting a fixed toe peg - it is not due to any issues with the folding one but just my preference! Thanks for your comment 👍
@@ThePonkster i have it fitted! works like a chamo!!
Nice vid ! Do you think this will fit on a 1997 speed Tripple t509 885cc? Also can you sell me that rod that you took off , if you still have it😬
I have no Idea if it fits the older model - but its cheap enough to just buy one and try! The bits that were taken off ended up on another "project bike - sorry
Hi all, the lever rod just broke last week on my 2011 speed triple, anyone knows for sure if this mod works on 2011-2015?

"I don't think it works on the 2011 onward Speed Triples, they have different rearsets and the shift rod goes through the frame."
But its cheap enough mod to just take a chance and have a go - the only way you will know for sure I guess
is it compatible with moved back aftermarket rearsets? for examples arrow or lightech?
I guess it all depends on how long your feet are and how far back your rearsets are - The only way you will know is to try - thats the thing about non standard modifications
@@ThePonkster thanks for your answer, do you know if there's more pedals we can use? maybe flushing out always in yamaha
@@ThePonkster i guess i'm not the first but...ehi you're the forgotten Mel Gibson twin!
@@nellaRissa that's you isn't it Mum ?
@@ThePonkster ahahahhahahahahahahaahahah you caught me
Does this also work on the Speed Triple 1050 from 2011 to 2015?
TBH I have no idea - but they are cheap as chips(which are oddly quite expensive at the moment) so it may be just worth getting one and trying it.
Hahaha thanks mate. Maybe i'll give it a shot. If so, i let you know🤙
@@sr50ac If you try it let us know if it worked or not, leave a new comment on this video and I will pin the comment at the top so everyone will have the info. Thanks
I don't think it works on the 2011 onward Speed Triples, they have different rearsets and the shift rod goes through the frame
Would this work on a st 1050 sprint ?
No Idea - I don't own a Sprint (or a speed triple now ) - I guess you just need to take a punt - they are not expensive!
