  • In this episode, we narrate the History of the Seventh Military Coup in Nigeria. This was the coup executed by Major Gideon Orkar, Col. Tony Nyiam and many others. It was the coup that almost took the life of General Ibrahim Babangida. But the coup was thwarted by the gallantry of Lt. Gen. Sanni Abacha (then Chief of Army Staff) who changed into combat gear on the morning of the coup and led some loyal soldiers to repel the coup plotters from Dodan Barracks. The coup failed but some persons lost their lives. Babangida's ADC - Lt. Col. U.K Bello lost his life in the coup. It is reported that UK Bello was the one who ferried his boss and family to safety outside the barracks. His undoing was coming back to the Barracks to fight the coup plotters. This is where he lost his life. He found his way into an armoured tank and was ready to engage the coup plotters but unknown to him, the firing pins had been removed from the tank by the maintenance engineer, a day before the coup. It was later discovered that the said engineer was part of the coup. Other persons also lost their lives in the crossfire. Abacha had every opportunity to have taken over the reins of power but he refused to do so. This is where Babangida had tremendous respect for Abacha. He saw him as a man of honour with great regard for comradeship. Abacha took to radio and announced to the country that the coup had been thwarted and that Babangida was safe. Hours later, Babangida addressed the nation and reassured the country that he was safe. Many of the coup plotters were arrested and tried while others like Lt. Col. Tony Nyiam escaped and flee abroad. In the end, dozens were executed by firing squad following the verdicts of the military tribunals. This appears to be the bloodiest military coup in the history of the country.

The speech by Major orkar was the reason why the coup failed. The Northerners, including there top military officers felt ... this was kind of another version of the first military coup led by a particular section of the country. Hence members of the armed forces from the North came out and quashed the coup.

Thanks for the documentary. I emphatize with IBB for this attack and thank the Almighty God for His life. UK Bello's role in saving IBB and his family are legendary. He should be immortalized! Abacha's loyalty is beyond comprehension. No, wonder, IBB gave him must respect and comradeship and allowed him lead the nation as a sign of gratitude

Abacha 'arm-twisted' IBB into not retiring him when he (IBB) was leaving office. It's similar to the 'deal' between Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu for Buhari's re-election in 2019. Tinubu made a 'deal' with Buhari to be his successor in 2023. Buhari who didn't like Tinubu, in the first place, try to back out from the 'deal'. Unfortunately for him, the likes of El-Rufai who wrongly believed that there was something for them in a Tinubu administration put Buhari under more pressure together with pressure from Tinubu himself who threatened to go public with a matter the Buhari presidency had successfully kept under wraps from Nigerians throughout its tenure. Buhari had no choice but to yield to the growing blackmail and the rest is history with Nigeria's democracy currently at the edge of a cliff.

He may have kill or retired all the high ranking general that are responsible in spoiling this country, he would have cut off all the state that are causing terrorism in the country. But he made a mistake, he was in hast to announce his objective, which is why the northerner fought back and reverse the coup.

I'm surprised that you failed to mentioned the ADC to the latest head of states. The late Lieutenant. Akintunde Akinolu Akinseyinwa who was shot along general Murtala Muhammad at ikoyi by Lt, Colonel Buka Suka Dimka of the physical training regiment of the Nigeria army Corps units. Hence, he was tried and court martial by appointed military Generals alongside the only senior army general that participated in the coup. They were being killed by some army executioners on the front of bar beach at lagos in 1976.

Gideon Orkar was politically naive to make such statements, he could have kept his intentions latent and be in control first. If Gideon succeeded, he wouldn't have lasted anyway because his intention was quite obvious and you definitely should expect a fight back. I think we should interrogate, explore and possibly exploit Gideon Orkar’s sentiments in the present middle belt because they could also be prevalent….. Let me go and check how the middle belt voted ✅ in the 2023 election's first, I’m coming 😊.

So, only low-life and low-ranking officers aided in the coup d'etat of Major Gideon. No Brigadier, lt. General or Major participated. Just what were they thinking? An entire set of senior officers would just agree that a Major is now leading the country? Babangida played it wisely later on as all the people who led the commission, the prosecutor, and the defense were officers from the south. Imagine, the chief of army staff and chiefs of all branches of the forces are alive and a simple major is making a radio speech that he has taken over? what kind of an idiot does that? It is also clear that only a handful of low-ranking southern officers hated Babangida, not the senior ranks and file of the south because they all supported him and did not participate in the coup d'etat.
