- In this episode, we narrate the History of the Seventh Military Coup in Nigeria. This was the coup executed by Major Gideon Orkar, Col. Tony Nyiam and many others. It was the coup that almost took the life of General Ibrahim Babangida. But the coup was thwarted by the gallantry of Lt. Gen. Sanni Abacha (then Chief of Army Staff) who changed into combat gear on the morning of the coup and led some loyal soldiers to repel the coup plotters from Dodan Barracks. The coup failed but some persons lost their lives. Babangida's ADC - Lt. Col. U.K Bello lost his life in the coup. It is reported that UK Bello was the one who ferried his boss and family to safety outside the barracks. His undoing was coming back to the Barracks to fight the coup plotters. This is where he lost his life. He found his way into an armoured tank and was ready to engage the coup plotters but unknown to him, the firing pins had been removed from the tank by the maintenance engineer, a day before the coup. It was later discovered that the said engineer was part of the coup. Other persons also lost their lives in the crossfire. Abacha had every opportunity to have taken over the reins of power but he refused to do so. This is where Babangida had tremendous respect for Abacha. He saw him as a man of honour with great regard for comradeship. Abacha took to radio and announced to the country that the coup had been thwarted and that Babangida was safe. Hours later, Babangida addressed the nation and reassured the country that he was safe. Many of the coup plotters were arrested and tried while others like Lt. Col. Tony Nyiam escaped and flee abroad. In the end, dozens were executed by firing squad following the verdicts of the military tribunals. This appears to be the bloodiest military coup in the history of the country.
The video is yours. Do well to enjoy it to the last drop!
The great man of Tiv Nation orkar your passion is still alive we love u .Nigeria will not see peace except the five northern states are not included in Nigeria 🇳🇬 I wish Biafra to stand.
Am from ugandan watch ur videos every day
I love military history
Thank you for this insightful piece
I love your videos and your Narration.
Your voice is excellent
I love your videos. I am from sweden and i learn very much by watching your videos. I love nigerian history and culture.
Orkah and co were courageous but obviously naive despite their education.
Great video👍👍
The speech by Major orkar was the reason why the coup failed. The Northerners, including there top military officers felt ... this was kind of another version of the first military coup led by a particular section of the country. Hence members of the armed forces from the North came out and quashed the coup.
True Orkar was overzealous
Great and very impactful videos
Your videos are very educative and insightful….I’ve seen the same story elsewhere but yours was in depth with depiction per excellence
Wonderful and very interesting
With the exception of excising the core Northern State, Okah was 100% person correct on his assessment of the state of the nation and the character of Babangida. He was nothing short of evil
Southern Nigeria should wise up!!!
Orkar passed a strong message!!
🔵What will be will be insight God through communication allow him to mastermind the rules
You're right
Very educative 😢
Is incredible
The armed forces were rotating the seat of power within themselves.
2 of the most loyal officers to their respective bosses then were Adekunle Fajuyi and U.K Bello and they both lost their lives protecting their bosses 💔🤍
1966 coup plotter

Thanks for the documentary. I emphatize with IBB for this attack and thank the Almighty God for His life. UK Bello's role in saving IBB and his family are legendary. He should be immortalized! Abacha's loyalty is beyond comprehension. No, wonder, IBB gave him must respect and comradeship and allowed him lead the nation as a sign of gratitude
Abacha 'arm-twisted' IBB into not retiring him when he (IBB) was leaving office. It's similar to the 'deal' between Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu for Buhari's re-election in 2019. Tinubu made a 'deal' with Buhari to be his successor in 2023. Buhari who didn't like Tinubu, in the first place, try to back out from the 'deal'. Unfortunately for him, the likes of El-Rufai who wrongly believed that there was something for them in a Tinubu administration put Buhari under more pressure together with pressure from Tinubu himself who threatened to go public with a matter the Buhari presidency had successfully kept under wraps from Nigerians throughout its tenure. Buhari had no choice but to yield to the growing blackmail and the rest is history with Nigeria's democracy currently at the edge of a cliff.
How can you immortalize people who contributed in destroying our lives and our country
You’re naive
Waw❤
The radio messages on repeat remind me of Zimbabwe 2017 coup
Abacha was a surrogate to IBB, remember the respect he accorded for IBB from abacha when he has every opportunity to become head of state, that's why IBB step aside brought shonekon and push abacha to forcefully take the head of state from him.
Gideon okar decision was the best for Nigeria better tomorrow but he was too quick to make the decision
Imagine being found not guilty due to "ethnic consideration",then you are re-trialed,found guilty and executed by firing squad?...too many adverts(4 is a lot)
#OnlyARevolution ✊🏽
It is 💯 %true that Babangida put us where we are today. Confirm
.
Uk Bello may your soul rest in peace.
Did Gideon orkar tell any lies in his coup speech?
No
Had it been Gideon Orkar coup succeeded, he would have change the direction Nigeria is heading to. He may have kill or retired all the high ranking general that are responsible in spoiling this country, he would have cut off all the state that are causing terrorism in the country. But he made a mistake, he was in hast to announce his objective, which is why the northerner fought back and reverse the coup.
You shoulders you are all Galant , to submit one,s life for his/ her life for others to live is unquatified thing to do .stay blessed at All times .
But Babangida was a full General and not a Major General, how come he is seen in this video wearing instigia of Major General?
I think everything has been done to rectify the anomalies in this country albeit by ignorant figures...we re left to God's love and intervention only at this point.
Too shallow. Doesn't include the gallantry of Col Tangi Ziddon, who moved the forces from Ikeja cantonment that made the difference...
I'm surprised that you failed to mentioned the ADC to the latest head of states. The late Lieutenant. Akintunde Akinolu Akinseyinwa who was shot along general Murtala Muhammad at ikoyi by Lt, Colonel Buka Suka Dimka of the physical training regiment of the Nigeria army Corps units. Hence, he was tried and court martial by appointed military Generals alongside the only senior army general that participated in the coup. They were being killed by some army executioners on the front of bar beach at lagos in 1976.
This topic was solely about what happened in the 1990 failed coupe against IBB and not that of 1976, that's a different story entirely n I'm sure there are other episodes to check what you're asking for. ...The entire Nigerian history cannot be compressed into a 30mins video
🤔🤔🤔
Wasn't UK Bello's brother then charged with stealing from Babangida a year after this attempted coup?
After 29 years ibb annul 2993 election,he granted an interview that he had agreement with northerners leaders that abacha would succed him
Alhamdulilah for IBB life my state would have been included to Chad mayb by now.
Waoh. And what's the name of your State, please?
IBB has been a waste to Nigeria the waste was more than whatever he contributed to the country.
Your stock videos don't match the event you are talking about. I learnt a lot about this coup from you. Thank you for the video
I appreciate. My editor misses a few of such a number of times. I take responsibility on his behalf. Thanks for watching.
How I wished giddion okar succeeded
the north will always be 10 steps ahead of you guyz
I wished too.
@@umaradomulticonceptltd9475 in begging!! Power has become your destruction and will continue to be!!
Okahs speech was controversial, naive and had no chance of succeeding. The coup failure stem on the speech nothing more. Again, they were too much in haste and failed to cut off communication. They should not have also draw regional line as demonstrated in the speech. So many mistakes in the speech
They would have killed abacha be4 going for babaginda
This abortive coup led to the 'deal' between IBB and Abacha, in that Abacha would rule after Babangida. MKO Abiola was merely a pawn in a chess game
Gideon Orkar was politically naive to make such statements, he could have kept his intentions latent and be in control first. If Gideon succeeded, he wouldn't have lasted anyway because his intention was quite obvious and you definitely should expect a fight back. I think we should interrogate, explore and possibly exploit Gideon Orkar’s sentiments in the present middle belt because they could also be prevalent….. Let me go and check how the middle belt voted ✅ in the 2023 election's first, I’m coming 😊.
Bello was stupid he should never have returned to the barrack, may his soul rest in peace 🤦🏽♂️🙏🏾
Not at all, I don't think so, life is all about taking risks however I think it's only that his time is due that's why and even if he didn't go back to barrack, he wouldn't escape his faith.
Well, the job of an ADC is such a risky job on its own.
Nobody will tell me that is col Bello that rescue ibb go to news watch as at then and listen to col inyang of what he said about infantry captain that was on duty that night ibb was taken to Bonny camp where he was hidden in a kitchen.
He was in haste to make such speech with weak plan
Honestly! Very weak plan. How would he leave out other chiefs like the chief of Army staff. I understand that the counter mobilisation by Abacha was from Abuja. Why Would the announcement be a network transmission all the way to Abuja? *Smh*
Very weak plans
So, only low-life and low-ranking officers aided in the coup d'etat of Major Gideon. No Brigadier, lt. General or Major participated. Just what were they thinking? An entire set of senior officers would just agree that a Major is now leading the country? Babangida played it wisely later on as all the people who led the commission, the prosecutor, and the defense were officers from the south. Imagine, the chief of army staff and chiefs of all branches of the forces are alive and a simple major is making a radio speech that he has taken over? what kind of an idiot does that? It is also clear that only a handful of low-ranking southern officers hated Babangida, not the senior ranks and file of the south because they all supported him and did not participate in the coup d'etat.
How old was Gowon when he took over?
@olomuisraelebere4290 age does not matter. He was still a low ranking officer and no way seniors will take orders from him as commander in chief. The only way the coup could have been successful was a version two of the first 1966 coup where senior officers were killed.
@@olomuisraelebere4290Gowon did not take over
Gowon was a puppet pawn put in place because he was from the middle belt
50% of the run commentary was based on assumptions, not factual. As an active personel in securing the the nation from the little grips of Maj Gedion Orkar. I have my story turned history to tell Nigerians.
Capt (then) Fidelis Ajibade Omowa. Now rtd Col.
In the security parlance. I bore ABDULKAZEEM. then.
