As I’ve watched his last series I wonder if his increasing obsession with death was not of its end, it’s end to his sufferings & addictions; but to it perhaps enabling him to move on to the next level of existence. But I wish mostly he’d stayed with us to a natural conclusion

If you choose a path for someone. It's not their path. Obviously, he'd been everywhere that he wanted to go and said everything that he wanted to say. Should he have lingered for a decade or two, waiting to be 'voted' off and in doing so, possibly destroyed the things he loved the most?

honestly kind of a disappointing episode, a pretty shallow look at Indonesian culture, half of it was on bali and yes bali is cool but there's 17 thousand other islands with an incredible diversity and richness of cuisine. also whats the point in going to Finns, the most overpriced, westernized and sanitized beach club on Bali, just to moan at tourists eating sliders while getting a massage.

in my opinion one of the best representations of Indonesia. Shadow play philosophy, religion, afterlife, dictator- and censorship. Yes there are 17.000 islands but like the lady in the beginning mentions, it would take a lifetime to cover. Doc does a great job at showing the stupidity of how most tourists spend their time in Indonesia/Bali versus the complexity of Indonesian culture mentioned in all other scenes. That scene at the pool to me is priceless.
Also, he did an interesting episode on Borneo.

Does everyone in Indonesia receive such an elaborate funeral involving so many persons?

Well, funerals in Indonesia will always involve many people since it's a communal society. But the big ceremonies like in this video typically are for the riches or nobilities because they're costly. For the rest of the people, there are crematoriums and smaller ceremonies involved

All the more poignant without the voiceover. But the message within Shadowplay…
